I attended the annual barrel tasting event at Fenestra Winery in Livermore, CA, and this video will show what that experience is like. The experience is open to the public but was attended by many wine club members. I am not a wine club member and the fee charged was just the normal tasting fee. This is an opportunity to try wines before they are bottled and to pre-purchase them since some lots are rather small. You also had the opportunity to talk to the staff about the wines and even the owner of the winery.
Due to the rainy weather, our experience was held indoors in a seminar style format. I don't know if the experience would have been different if the weather had been better. I expected the wine to be taken straight from the barrel to your glass like at more touristy wineries in Napa, but that was not the case. The winery pre-filled bottles to make pouring easier and faster given the format.
As for the wines, we were given a tasting of the Sauvignon Blanc initially, which I thought was pretty good, and then the 5 reds we tasted were more on the bolder side. I even thought the Pinot Noir was bolder than most. So, if you like bold reds, this place may be the place for you.
I will need to return and try a traditional tasting to see if I like the wines better once they age a little more and are bottled.
