My few cents of worth of information about W in lubricants. W represents Winter grade, this would mean the cranking viscosity of the oil during start up specifically in countries with Winter season. This would mean that 0W, 5W, 10W, 15W and this is the viscosity when you start your engine (cranking viscosity) at cold temperature. When engine attains its operating temperature, viscosity will automatically shift to 30 or 40 (0W/30, 5W/40, 15W/30 or 40. The second number after the W viscosity, which is the maintaining operating temperature of the engine. This is the nomenclature of lubricants viscosity. on multi-grade which has W letter. Just sharing my experience as I have worked with one of the biggest oil companies.

@@axelgonzales6384 Dear Mr, Axel.....any lubricant with W ratings can be used in the Philippines and no question about it. As I said, multigrade oils (with W letter) has an advantage because it has a higher VISCOSITY INDEX (VI) of around 150-160 vs monograde with VI of 100-110. This is the property of the oil which keeps the viscosity of the oil to remain almost constant when engine is operating at high temperature and high speed. Much better if SYNTHETIC oils are used, because its VI is really high that can withstand deterioration especially used by racing cars in FORMULA 1. W is a nomenclature for Winter as designated by any oil company or lubricants manufacturer. This is the knowledge I acquired when I was once a Technical Service Engineer in a multi-national oil company. Hope my views help. Thank you for this nice exchange.

5W-40 means the viscosity grade of oil at LOW temp is 5 and viscosity grade of 40 at HIGH temp. the higher the number, the higher the viscosity of the oil. viscosity po ay yung lapot ng oil or the ability to flow..

Yes, you are using what we call MULTI-GRADE oils (W means winter) and in our language in the oil indusrty we call it the cranking viscosity at low temperature and 40 is the operating viscosity when the engine is running at high temperature and high speed. MULTI-GRADE oils has a significant property called VISCOSITY INDEX (VI), of 150-160 which keeps the VISCOSITY of the oil to remain constant/stable when operating at high temp-hi speed.

Pwede po na pang diesel or gasoline pero dapat ay may API s or c ang label ng oil nyo. SN or CF depende sa brand ng oil. S stands for spark ignition and C is for compression.

Just take note of the API Classification which is indicated in the lubes package or container. Letter S (stands for spark ignition -gasoline) and C ( for compression for diese). You will read in the container SD, SE, SF, SN .......and CC, CD, CE, CF, CN, etc..The higher the letter paired with S or C, the higher the service classification is which means more additives are in the formulation. Example....API SF/CE, this oil can be both for gasoline and diesel engines. API means American Petroleum Institute. You will also notice that there are other specs indicatied especially the EURO 4 requirements,
