Although it's not mentioned whether Abby's ovaries were left intact, she continues to be very female and Luka continues to find her very sexy indeed long after the birth of baby Joe. This would have been a great chance for the producers to educate viewers by including a conversation about the possible need for hormone replacement therapy for Abby if she had indeed been totally gutted of all reproductive organs at a relatively young age. Women around the world would have heaped even more accolades on this show and its writers, directors and especially the key actors. Story is everything.

Removing the ovaries in this situation would not be routine. Oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries) in premenopausal women is associated with an increase in cardiovascular disease, maybe other problems. Abby's ovaries are presumably healthy, there would be no need to remove them, it was the bleeding from her uterus that was endangering her life.
