Toros isn't a priest. He's at a Baptism where he's being the godfather. And in fact the whole reason why he's even involved with Vanya is because he is Vanya's godfather as well. And that's why it's such a big deal for him, because he was supposed to "protect" Vanya

there was something so real and gentle about this… falling in love blindly when you are young with little experience. It really touched me and comforts my younger self who gave all of myself to people who didn’t deserve it

That ending of her breaking down on the Russian guy's chest, clearly fearful of the uncertainty in life that awaits her and the feeling of being alone and lost, reminded me so much of the ending in Lost In Translation when Scarlet Jouanson's character breaks down in Bill Murray's arm's.

If I had seen these movie when i was alot younger, and dumber and niave I prob would have cried or got emotional etc but older now I clapped at the end and felt more relief than anything else and in my way be glad at least you got a fancy expensive ring out of it, some of us just got trauma, pstd and trust issues with our "lessons"

Y'all sound jaded lmao of course it was still a lucky break but the point isn't a net gain the point is she had an ideal life yanked away from her callously by someone who she had deluded herself into thinking actually cared about her. Was she naive for that? Of course. Was it still a terrible thing to do to someone, and should you still feel empathy for her? I'd say yes.

God, I didn’t view this film as saying she dodged a bullet, so to speak. I viewed it as saying, here is another poor and powerless woman being chewed up and spat out by the rich and powerful. The woman we see at the end of this film is broken. I also read Vanya differently to you. This is a guy who thinks nothing of buying a person; turning their life upside down; and ending it all at the drop of a hat because to him doing all of that is just like a fun holiday thing to do. And he has the power to do it. As we see on the plane, he couldn’t care less that Anora‘s life has been destroyed by him. The only thing that bothers him is being told off - and told what to do - by his parents. He’s a psychopath.

I enjoyed this movie, but yes, it is too long. Some scenes went on and on forever, and didn't have to. I think it could have been a lot tighter with better editing, and still had the same effect. This really bugged me. Good film though.

Also, the line at the office in Vegas where Anora responds to Vanya's mother calling her a prostitute that he hates her so much that he married a prostitute... that was SUCH a great line, like almost Drag Race library/reading challenge-level witty comeback. It got a GREAT reaction out of the crowd I saw the movie with at Fantastic Fest.

Perfect call on the anti-Graduate. Was thinking something similar. It was a subversive comedy. Just in the way it's shot. Like through Safdie bros lens. It did feel long to me. But I'm sure I'll like it more on second viewing. Loved the ending. Also I loved the way they slowly start to keep Igor in frame. You could tell he was gaining prominence

I remember seeing Whore when it came out. I really liked Theresa Russel since I’d seen her in Black Widow w/ Debra Winger (before Debra Winger got weird on us). I don’t remember the movie poster of Whore proclaiming that it was ‘Theresa Russell in a Ken Russell film’. I don’t know Ken Russell and I’m wondering if he was her husband then because I know he wasn’t for long… As for Anora, it’s getting accolades all over the place and I’m excited for it! Sean Baker is making quite a name for himself with his beautiful, gritty films, so good for him! Will the academy recognize him? Who really cares if they do or don’t? IMO, their opinion doesn’t mean much these days. Thank you boys for the enticing review. This one seems to be a ‘must see’ and I’m jonsing for a really good new film!!♥️💃🏻💍

Adore your video as always. I saw this and I really felt like it dragged like Joseph was talking about in that one section. I also don't think Anora herself had really any character to her and I was greatly disappointed how she just ended up feeling like her character was always dependent on the men around her, and that this move became more about them as she just went along with everything. I was really excited to be following a sex worker as a character but I didn't feel like she had enough depth to me be fully invested in this film, especially with how everything plays out. The more she just walked along with them, the more I was taken out of the film. However, the craft of the film and the acting was absolutely excellent, so I'm mixed on this.

I saw this at Fantastic Fest this year, and the biggest question I had was: what kind of vocal prep does Mikey Madison do to not lose her voice in the moments where she's screaming her head off? Having seen her in this and Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, where she ALSO has a bit where she's shrieking like a banshee, I get the sense she must do some INSANE warmup and such to keep her vocal cords intact.

So we watched Starlet on Saturday, which we hadn't seen and saw Anora on Sunday. We both were completely baffled by the praise this movie has gotten. We loved Sean Bakers last 4 films, but this one just seemed devoid of character development or interesting dialog. Really disappointing overlong bore for us.
