Awesome trip down memory lane! I can't believe you've left out classics like Civilization, Warcraft, Heroes of Might and Magic, Colonization, Sensible Soccer, Warlords, Commander Keen and some I've probably forgot... Well, at least they were a huge part of my childhood and many of those games have lived on and sees sequels to this day.

Yes i've played Blockout in the early 90s. My mother used to play it daily over years, so it was her favorite game for a very long time. For me personally it isn't a title "still worth playing" today, but i can't get really excited about Tetris-Like games for long.

Might&Magic 4+5. Having both of them made it possible to merge them, and getting extra content called World of Xeen. As originals i think they were called Clouds of Xeen and Darkside of Xeen. Also can recommend trying out Death Gate, a point and click game. May be hard (impossible?) to get as floppy though. Same with another gem called Lands of Lore.

"Wolfpack" from Broderbound was a major staple of my youth. While games like the Silent Hunter series may be more detailed simulations, nothing else has let you run multiple submarines in a coordinated attack. Microprose produced a number of my other go to games - F-19 Stealth Fighter, M1 Tank Platoon. and Gunship 2000. The Manuals alone were often as good as the games, giving technical and historical background on the simulation's subject.
@onaretrotip8 жыл бұрын
Not heard of Wolfpack, thanks for the recommendation! The simulators always had the most in-depth manuals, some of them were like having a manual for an actual plane.

I can't find any other reference to it here, but one of the best puzzle games I ever played (on any format) is called 'Trugg'. The game concept is along similar lines to the excellent 8 bit 'Boulder Dash'. Worth searching out, although sound can be a problem since it was tied to ancient sound cards. This does not restrict the fun though, it just makes things silent.
@onaretrotip6 жыл бұрын

kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJvMZYlqZpqEj7s I have the full - extended - set of Trugg, bought at the time from the producers of the game. Most players have seen only the shareware version shown here (fully playable). It's very tough at the extended levels!
@inquisitor2296 жыл бұрын
The shareware levels are under the 'Cyberium' batch name. There are three additional batches of levels, called 'Conquistador', 'Nebulari' and 'Spirithouse'. Also available at the time were 'Netmare' and 'Trugg junior'. I am pretty certain I have junior, although I can't remember for certain!

Thanks! I never really got on with Sierra's adventure games as much as LucasArts'. Maybe because they could be very unforgiving and I was quite young, but perhaps I should revisit some of them.
@gaddyric8 жыл бұрын
No problem : ) Yeah the potential for dead ends is annoying and there are a number of bugs in each game. I still really enjoyed them despite that all because of the storyline and gameplay. One of the things i thought was cool was how the solution to a lot of the game puzzles depended on your class, skills, and even how skilled you are. For instance there is one puzzle where a magic user could use two different spells to solve but one is harder because it takes more skill at the spell in order to succeed. Powering up a magic user is a LOT more tedious admittedly but i still liked that class the most. If you do decide to play though I highly recommend making a lot of "checkpoint" save files

Although I'm a fan of old DOS games, I have to say that Lemmings on DOS just cant stand up to the Acorn Archimedes version, maybe it's the memories I have from playing it on the school's Archimedes back in the day, but that version defined Lemmings for me, the Amiga version is pretty good too.
@onaretrotip6 жыл бұрын
I've never played the Archimedes version (I was a BBC Micro man), but I originally played it on my Amiga 500+. Great game.

Some games from those two vids I actually knew - or even still play in DOS-Box emulators or Steam ports! However, there's one game you left off the list - or two, anyway. Both the Little Big Adventure games! (aka Twinsen's Adventure/Odyssey... named Relentless in some countries like the US) Great action-adventure stuff from DOS that I still play and recently they even got a Steam release!
@onaretrotip8 жыл бұрын
I never played the sequel, but I loved Little Big Adventure. It's definitely a contender for the list if I ever do a third part in this series!

It's certainly worth checking out. It's a pretty strong sequel with good story and some improvements to the gameplay and graphics. ^_^

Thanks for this terrific retro tour of MS DOS games! I'm trying to recall a platform type game I'd played that I think was made in the mid 90's. It was similar to Lode Runner in that you'd have to traverse a screen to escape, and pick up items long the way. But it was different in that you could leap upwards to reach floating platforms, instead of bound by using ladders. You could also leave a level without collecting everything (but you'd lose the bonus). Does that game ring a bell?
@onaretrotip6 жыл бұрын
Think I missed this comment, sorry for the late reply. Hmm, I'm not sure I'm afraid. Sounds like there could be quite a few 90s games that fit that description. Anything else you can remember about it?
@Steve105788 жыл бұрын
It Came from the Desert, remember it well. It was released before the PC overtook the Amiga graphically as the Amiga version looked a lot better and sound wise too if I am not mistaken. A sequel was released called Antheads. I liked a lot of Cinemaware games from the Amiga era.
@onaretrotip8 жыл бұрын
Most games from the 80s and early 90s were better on Amiga to be honest. Huge Amiga fan here (my favourite system). I was a big fan of Cinemaware at the time too.

A few I haven't played there. Loved Leisure Suit Larry and Stunts (which was called 4D Sports Driving over here).

Well, a quick rundown on these game: - Protostar A game loosely based on the Star Trek franchise. Earth is under siege by an alien race called the Skeetch and you've been tasked to sneak through the enemy lines to the Thule Sector, an area of space between Earth's sector and Skeetch space. The sector is inhabited by 4 sentient species and also hosts a human trade company called Newfront. You are supposed to act as the captain of a Newfront spaceship, gathering resources to sell, so you can wire funds back to Earth for the defense of earth, while in the mean time trying to befriend the 4 sentient species, building an alliance to cut off Skeetch supply lines. You'll be looking for crewmembers so your ship will function more efficiently, upgrading your ship with better weapons, shielding and engines, gathering resources and fighting Skeetch and pirates in an expansive sector, filled with over a hundred solar systems. - Quest for Glory Originally known as Hero's Quest, this is a VGA remake. It's an RPG where you're an adventurer that has traveled through the mountains to a town called Spielburg, seeking glory as a hero. You can choose one of three classes of persona's at the start of the game (warrior, magic user, thief) and the class that you choose will affect the accesibility of certain parts of the game (if I'm not mistaken, only the thief can gain access to the Thieves' guild). You have a number of skills that you can improve, but they don't improve through some leveling system, instead they improve by using the specific skill (climbing improves by climbing, stealth improves by sneaking). There's a lot of great humor in the game and the team hasn't spared itself on mockery. - SimAnt From the creators of SimCity came SimAnt, basically, you run an ant colony and you can control one ant to dig a nest and gather food while waging war on the red ants and trying to dodge the spider. - Pizza Tycoon Management type of game where you can run your own chain of pizza restaurants. You have to manage hiring, firing and training staff to work in your restaurant, manage supplies, create your own pizza recipes, compete in pizza challenges with other pizza restaurant owners (where you have to recreate the pizza that they show you how to make in advance as accurately as possible) and manage property. However, in the mean while you can improve your status both in the eyes of the general public and in the shadows, growing out to be a kingpin in crime by trading in weapons and sabotaging your opponents. - Theme Hospital Great game where you build your own hospital to treat patients. Great humor, where people come in with conditions like "bloated head" with the puncturing and reinflating of the head as treatment and more of such ailments. - Rollercoaster Tycoon Build your own theme park with a heavy emphasis on building rollercoasters - Ports of Call Manage your own shipping company. You need to buy and sell ships and use them to ship freights across the globe. In some situations you may be called upon to steer the ship yourself to maneuvre though reefs or between ice bergs or to dock the ship in the harbour.

What I think is missing from the two lists is(and I am PRETTY sure they were DOS...) are Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe by Lucas Arts, and AV8B Harrier, by Domark. Am I right?
@onaretrotip8 жыл бұрын
Not sure about the latter, but Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe definitely was. A guy that worked as a playtester back in those days at LucasArts commented on my LucasArts Developer Spotlight video, and had some interesting stories about the games, including Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. That was cool!

Fantastic list! Not only games worth playing on DOS, but these are games worth playing in general! No cluse what Snooker is, so that must be something exclusive to the UK? It's interesting how many of these games did get console ports too.
@onaretrotip8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Church. Yeah, many of these got console ports - some great and some awful. Snooker is a game like pool (do you call it pool in North America?) but the table is much much bigger and so is much harder. A great game, that I like to watch and also play once a week when I can.
@TheGameGrinder8 жыл бұрын
Yep we call it pool (weird I know). I dig the challenge, so Snooker might be something I'll have to keep an eye out for. Any time I go out for drinks and there's a pool table around, you better believe I'm playing.

Oh, we call it pool as well. I used to play a lot of pool when I used to drink regularly, but play mostly snooker these days. Snooker is far more challenging and skillful (I'm rubbish at it).

Duke Nukem 3D was hella lot of fun multiplayer. Descent was a lot of fun. Prince of Persia was ridiculously difficult (dunno that I ever beat it). And though I played the majority of these, I will end on the Lemmings. Old game but it was a lot of fun.

Warlord's 3 (1997 SSG/ Red Orb) An awesome strategy game and easy to crack the graphics so you can do a personal version. I turned it into a Kung fu game, customizing the graphics to be Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Ninjas, etc. I changed all of the names to Chinese names (a lot of work on that) but it was a gas to play. I highly recommend it. Also, the "Terrain Editor" in the original Sim City" was awesome, With some work on the graphics I was able to make an Egyptian style 'modern city' complete with Sphinxs, also an Aztec one where I changed the airplanes into flying Aztec heads, and an Oz Emerald City. Truth is, I knew nothing about cracking the graphics on a game at the time, so it must have been pretty easy to do. =) Oh and Mega Race, if for no other reason than to watch Lance Boyle. hehe
