Andy Serkis was absolutely brilliant! Throughout the episode you see layers of his character: how he cares for the older guy, his desperate need to hold on to the idea that if he just plays along he’ll eventually get to go home, his self-doubt when he begins to suspect he’s been wrong, and finally his acceptance and resolve when he sees that there’s no way out unless they can fight their way out. Serkis was able to convey so much in such few moments. Casting decisions in this show have been stellar, selecting amazing talent to portray lynchpin characters.

@The Rotten💯 nah if you watched the episode, Andor was trying to get info from Serkis' character saying those in charge really don't care what they do or say since they can just zap the floor twice a day. Both the episode's name "Nobody's listening" well as overarching philosophy of Andor is that the Empire is so full of itself and considers everyone else beneath them that it really doesn't pay attention as the rebellion is slowly infiltrating their ranks and getting stronger. Back to your point about isolating Serkis' character, while in real life it would be the case, in the context of the show it makes sense

And a story that wasn’t built to break canon and characters whose story allowed for new events to be inserted. This is why a story about a character makes a lot more sense than one about a character like Obi Wan with a well fleshed out backstory.

Girlroy wouldn't touch characters he had no part in creating. that and he doesn't like using force users. He didn't even like Star Wars when he took the Rogue One job. I think that Disney needs to just hire grounded writers. People who don't like Sci Fi all that much and are just good about making realistic relationships and desires. Then the sci fi would be like icing on the cake. But yeah I agree with Gilroy in that there's this cognitive dissonance involved whenever one writer takes over for characters they didn't create. I think Disney should just make that a rule. Hire grounded writers, let them create their own characters and striking character driven views, give them several projects for those characters, and possibly if its outside of the Empire era, let them make striking culturally driven views on architecture, vehicle design, weaponry, etc.

This is the bleakest star wars I've seen on-screen and I'm here for it. Everything, in the prison and out, felt dark and foreboding. Andy Serkis was AMAZING this episode, loved to see his transition as well. Can't wait for next week!

I think they do a great balance. Its bleak but not the bleakest thing I've seen, but yes the bleakest in Star Wars though it doesn't really feel like it if it makes sense. I feel like they mastered the tone, made it as smooth as they can given the obstacles the empire puts well meaning people into.

This show has done something i thought was impossible: it made me care about Cassian Andor. My expectations for this series going in were pretty low but I've been pleasantly surprised at how good it is. The empire is actually menacing and kinda scary now. You did good with this one, Disney.

I think even though this contains Andor’s story, I see it more as an ensemble show. It’s been wonderful to see how even minor characters have great story arcs or have a huge impact in the context of the fledgling rebellion. I was not expecting that at all.

Did you not like Rogue One? When I heard Gilroy would return with this I was all in. When it comes to Star Wars or any other material out there, I pay attention to the writer and sometimes director. Better way to manage expectations in my opinion.

"Never more than twelve" is likely one of the best final lines in a TV episode that I have ever seen. It is such a pay off. The entire episode has been building towards this moment. This show is the first in a long time that make me so nervous watching it that I don't look at my phone. It is absolutely enthrawling and I agree that it is some of the best television ever made.

I love how this episode took Kino from being so obsessively fixated on maintaining order and not jeopardizing his sentence to being fully on board with the escape plan. And at no point did it feel rushed, it was completely natural and just felt right. And Andy Serkis unsurprisingly plays it perfectly. Also the most terrifying thing about the doctor telling Bix about the torture is just how casual he was, like it’s just another day in the office for him. Everything in this show is just brilliant.

It definitely didn’t feel rushed. Nothing in this show feels rushed. That’s the problem. This show has a very niche appeal. It only appeals to the most diehard Star Wars fans that are still left that are willing to linger excessively on the smallest of details. This is not gonna capture you a large audience.

@@PrincessFionaYT I think you’re mistaking rushing with brisk pacing. Rushing is a development issue, pacing isn’t. Even putting that aside this episode is hardly what I’d call slow. And great, it should appeal to the fans first, worry about drawing in the larger audience second. That’s been the one of the major issues with Disney Star Wars from the start.

@Bowen I agree but this show is not appealing to the fans. That’s the problem. Is it is it is appealing to a very small subset of really die hard core fans. The word is been out for nine weeks and it still hasn’t been able to gain an audience even amongst the fan base, much less normal people. It’s already seen a 68% drop in it’s initial audience which was already the lowest for any Star Wars show in history. That’s why the show has already been canceled and season two will be a cut down and delayed season. They’ve already announced that it’s the final season and it’s now been pushed back to 2024. There will be no season three. And they’re going to take away the wrong lessons from this. And we’re never going to get a show like this again with thoughtful writing and real dialogue. Because they were going to blame the failure of the show on the things that everybody likes about it.

Easily the most tense and distressing episode in the series so far. A little detail that I really loved was how Bix’s screaming actually transitions very well into the high pitched whining and whirring of machinery as we’re shifted back to Andor in prison. The scenes with Cirril’s mother are absolutely brilliant as well; it’s a really nice portrayal of how parental manipulation unfortunately works. The way she switches between chastising and belittling him; insinuating that he’s a failure who doesn’t care, to praising Cirril for his ‘promotion’ is absolutely something that happens irl. I feel pretty sorry for the person who’s personal experience they’re probably drawing on in order to make it so convincing.

Honestly, this series should be used as a benchmark for other future Star Wars stories. The world building, character development, subtle nuances that all tie together to build arc's in the story until they reach their explosive climax, is what keeps me anticipating each new episode. My only regret will be having to wait well over a year till the next installment of episodes that eventually lead to the doorstep of Rogue One. However, it will be worth it.

In all the interviews with the other show-runners, they seem to treat it like a joke. Like, "this isn't a real show, it's just Star Wars." The same vibe I get from Rings of Power. In contrast, Andor clearly takes it seriously. One would hope, that with a billion dollar property, the owners would expect the same level of care from all.

That’s the problem. All of the fans giving that show love are pretty much here on this channel. This show has failed to garner any kind of an audience whatsoever and it’s likely, not through its own fault necessarily, going to be responsible that you’re never going to see content like this again. Had this show come on the heels of stunning successes, things would’ve been very different. But this show was too little too late and I believe the executives are going to take away the very wrong impressions from the show’s abysmal performance.

I also “like” that the torture sequences are not simply beatings. Andy Serkis shines in this episode. The writing and directing allows him to peel back the layers of the onion and explore Kino’s character. Supervisor Dedra Meero also steals the screen during her scenes. She’s gone from an ISB agent unsure of herself who I was rooting to a full-on intimidating ISB agent with a clear plan for achieving her goals. Gaining the support of Major Partagaz was all she needed. I literally felt Bix’s terror during her “interview.” The darkness explored in this episode ranks up there with Anakin/Vader’s youngling scene in ROTS…except that Andor affords more time for the audience to experience and imagine what that torture must be like…it sat with me.

The interrogation scene reminded me of the beginning of Inglorious Bastards, where the villain is so casual but the stakes and the threat are so high. Slowly the tension of the scene builds and builds until you just can’t stand it. Of course even though people complain about the show being slow, I don’t think this would land as hard as it does if we hadn’t gotten to know Bix in the previous episodes.

For me (as relatively new to SW), the difference has been that my love The Mandalorian didn’t lead to a deeper love for this universe. Watching Andor has me watching a variety of YT commentary channels, wanting to learn so much more about the books and the animated series. Because the show does such a great job with the world building and writing, I can’t wait to learn more about it. Before I was content not having watched the prequels since I knew the basic plot and didn’t feel I needed to have a deeper understanding in order to get the gist of the current content. With Andor, you don’t NEED to have a deep knowledge, but I can see how much more rewarding it would be. Plus, it just got me excited to WANT more!

Some people say Andor doesnt "feel" like SW. They're right. Andor is not only expanding what SW can be, it is *ELEVATING* it. IMO Andor is one of the best prestige TV Dramas of the past few years. This matters because for better or worse, SW has always been consistent but so long as it exists in a box it will always be limited in quality & scope. To clarify, not everything should be this. But Andor expands the traditional audience of SW, and it will attract better talent to help make better SW content as a whole.

I had that thought, too. And if we get there the wonderful twist should be that he is great at procedure and recalling pertinent information, but has no instincts like Dedra to actually put random pieces together. He needs someone else to give his focus and efficiency a direction. In taking Dedra down, he unwittingly opens the cracks that allow the Rebel Alliance to be forged when Dedra was on the cusp of uncovering the key players.

It was interesting to see how Cassian is slowly becoming the 'alpha male' of his group of prisoners and beginning to take charge. The prisoners are starting to come together and even Kino Loy is beginning to look at Andor as the leader. It was good to see the prisoners plotting and preparing for an escape and that dynamic conflicting with their hope to be released after a specific number of shifts. Ulaf's failing health and the other prisoners' concern for him was touching, especially coming from Cassian who has been rather cold-hearted in much of the series. Syril somehow reminds me of Norman Bates; he is a man on the edge, I fully expect him to murder his mother and stalk Dedra (whom he clearly has developed some strange reverence for) until ISB guards kill him. You can sense his sanity wavering in and out and a dormant rage waiting to come out.

@@Arezoo298195 He could be the wildcard in the whole thing -- Dedra figures out everything with the rebels, is about to expose them and out of no where (after a few more episodes of shown interactions between them) Syril appears and kills her with a blaster for rejecting him. It would be something you didn't see coming and really bring out the human and psychological aspect of living in that universe. Syril cracks and Dedra was so focused on proving herself that she didn't see she was in danger.

Another awesome episode! It just goes to show what good actors can do when they have good writing to work with. Andy Serkis was phenomenal as we watched him start listening to Cassian and have his doubts about getting out of the prison grow to the point where he has signed on to the prison break plan. Dedra continues to shine as am increasingly scary antagonist. That early line about them excited about this new technique the doctor had come up with for interrogating (i.e., torturing) prisoners was chilling. Anyone else notice that when the Mothma's are gathered around the dinner table, Mon sits at the head of the table while her husband and daughter sit across from one another down at the other end?

Let's not forget Christopher Fairbank who plays Ulaf in a way that was totally convincing. His health deteriorated from a cramping hand, to being confused and irritable, to clearly having some sort of physical episode and finally collapsing. I was wondering weather this was a planned ruse to create an opportunity for escape, or if this was going to put a wrench in what was planned. Damned right that this is a show that would be a stellar show regardless of it taking place in the Star Wars universe or the real world. It is all anyone could have hoped for.

I think the viewership for Andor is actually pretty good. There was initially a misreporting of the numbers which everyone quickly jumped on and screamed “see no one is watching” which was soon rectified.

@@anthonybrown4726 I am quite bored by this entire show so far. One problem is that it is a prequel, so we know what happens to Andor. Another, is that very little actually happens. What little is happening, is based around Andor, who I think very much deserves to be in prison, so I'm not rooting for his escape, as he is a murderer, while the most interesting parts are based around imperial characters who I am NOT rooting for their success in destroying the rebellion. The background stuff going on with Mon Mothma is boring. I know she becomes someone important in the rebellion, so she's going to survive all this... I don't "fear" her getting caught in these money laundering shennanigans, as her being deposed from her senate seat would just push her more into her eventual role in the rebellion... Plus, their "humanizing" of the imperials in that first heist scenario just rubbed me the wrong way. I don't want to sympathize with the evil empire. It doesn't add layers of grey, it just paints the rebellion in a worse light.

@@NameNotAChannel the nuanced take about the rebels and the empire is one aspect that I love about the series. It's not a fairy tale about the good guys vs the bad guys. We can see how the empire has real people living real lives (in an obviously make believe world). That people are disillusioned from the empire and join the rebels. That the rebels do things that lead to death, torture, and oppression (actions by Luthen). One of the best written stories I've seen in a long time, with great character development, and top notch acting.

Kino Loy I think may be my favorite part of this episode. I really liked see him become a much more interesting character that isn't simply a hard-ass. Even in the last episode, he never seemed unreasonable. It definitely came across to me that his time in the prison is almost up, and he just doesn't want anything to go wrong while he's still there. Excited to see what happens next week.

“A long time ago…” an empire slowly took over the galaxy and this shows how masterfully it did it. It’s like looking at the gears inside of a well-made watch: we’re all familiar with the glitz of Lucas’ IP, but I like that Andor is breaking it down for us to see how it operates. After this series is over I’m going to want to rewatch, not only R1, but the OT (esp. ESB), knowing that the ruthlessness of the Empire extends well beyond our main antagonists of Palpatine and Vader.

I said the identical thing to my wife after watching it last night it's a great show period regardless of being set in the star wars universe we are both fans since 1978 so it's wonderful to go back to that era of star wars I assume that's why there has been low viewership it's simply for more mature audiences. I haven't heard anyone say it's bad really so I think it's a case of those who watch it like it spread the word.

Like everyone else, I’m floored by how good this show is. The issue people have of “nothing happens” I usually take to mean there aren’t jumpy cuts or lens flares or over-the-top explosions… all of this known as the key jangling to keep us from noticing the lack of story or coherent scripting/character development. Andor doesn’t need those because there are actual professionals writing, acting, directing and producing this show. The thing that drives me crazy is that legacy characters don’t get the same respect. They hand those characters to unproven talent (no offense Deborah Chow - you did what you could to make Obi-Wan look good) but take great care with Disney era characters. Oh well. At least we have this show to rewatch. I can’t wait to binge it all at once after the run is completed. Can’t wait to see what season 2 brings!

In my opinion you are as spot on as ever, amazing breakdown. Truly amazing content! I love the show, and of course as any other human, I love people seeing the same as I do, and agree with what I think, although I welcome any scepticism or disagreements. But screenwriting, details, acting, characters, story developments may be the best I’ve seen in a while. I like how Vel says "Who?" when Mon Mothma asks what "He" is having him do. There's a lot packed into the dialog. We know that Mon knows Vel knows Luthen, and that she knows Vel knows she knows. She doesn't have to specify who "he" is. So, when Vel replies "Who?" we know she isn't actually asking who, and the way Mon doesn't answer ... Mon knows that's not what Vel means. So what does Vel actually mean? She says they made a vow. What vow? We can deduce that this vow includes a code of secrecy - they NEVER talk about Luthen, not even in private. Now that says a LOT. Remember ... when Vel met with Kleya, the first thing she says is "I really thought he'd be here." Kleya says, "He read your message." There's a different level of trust there.

I like how there's been a bit of a theme that ties back into Rogue One, "Do you think anybody's listening?" "I do. Someone's out there." There's the whole waiting in the transmission tower for contact with Luthen. And a couple times in the prison arc we have Cassian cry out that there's nobody listening. It's a small thing, but it's a show full of small, thoughtful things.

Serkis is bringing his A game as always. He stood out in the UK’s “Channel 4” show “Streetwise” back in the 80’s. Always thought he’d go far. Andor is a fantastic TV show. One of the best things I’ve seen in years and certainly the best Star Wars Show. This episode also proves it’s most DEFINITELY not for children.

This episode was so well written. I actually felt a since of dread when the prisoners found out that an entire level was fried. Things like this show just how brutal the Empire was and why so many people began to stand up against them.

Andor is amazing because it has DEPTH. Mandalorian and Boba Fett are indeed fun. Obi Wan has the feel of the original trilogy. Andor stands out from all of them. Great writing, acting and these characters aren't just cutouts reading lines. You get a sense that these are real people. This recent episode was intense.

This show has to be creating a lot of buzz and accumulating viewers as it goes along. It’s cool to have thought provoking parallels to the real world, interesting story arcs and crescendos along the way.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be happening. A massive number of potential viewers have just completely tuned out because Disney. Many others never got past the "boredom" of the first episode. In tone and style, it is not a show for everyone. It doesn't have the high fantasy space opera feel of the original trilogy, particularly by not having any element of the Force openly presented at all (let alone Jedi or Inquisitors). And for those who honestly just don't care for the type of show Andor is, that's ok. The problem is the people who are just assuming it is yet another subpar Disney production; who just want to see everything Disney Star Wars burn in the vain belief that Disney would sell and someone else would rebuild the franchise; or who only want Jedi, Sith, lightsabers, and explosions. They are not willing to give the show its chance and are unwilling or undiscerning enough to recognize the quality of the storytelling and world building it presents.

Thanks for your reviews. As important as it is to criticize the lackluster programs that Disney has produced, it is just as important to play up shows that have been really well done. I hope more people will come around and support this show. It has been outstanding so far.

I don't think this show is getting nearly the praise it deserves. Almost every episode ends and I realize I've been tensed up, leaning forward into the screen the same way I used to get sucked into the movies as a kid. And now I walk that wonderful tightrope of not wanting to wait for next week's episode but also not wanting it come to an end. I feel like Star Wars has kind of gone the way of The Walking Dead. You know, they get kill off Carl, then get rid of Rick and you wonder "Where is the show going to go from here? Isn't this where it should end? Just end it already!" It just kept going on and on. But then, like magic (new writers and show runners didn't hurt, but...) there was actually room to let the other characters grow and work with challenges. It gave the show new life. And so I see this happening outside of the Skywalkers in Star Wars. Not everything has to come directly back to Darth Vader or Luke or Leia or Han or Maul... I imagine somebody spit-balling the idea, what if Han Solo's in the prison with Andor? And was thusly thrown out of the writers room and sent down to work on Book of Boba Fett where that kind of random crap was tolerated. This has been a good move on Disney's part, make a new character, show us why we should care about him/her, don't ride coattails, don't shoehorn. Proof read, edit well, and tell a story.

I agree this is another tremendously written episode. The depth of the subtext of the characters and actions of the Empire expresses the very theme of George Lucas in his early films. The original Star Wars and his first feature "THX 1138". Though Star Wars was a light hearted space opera, with serious messaging sprinkled in, as expressed on a few other channels the dark tones of "THX 1138" warnings against tyranny is expressively similar in Andor. "Absolute power corrupts, absolutely." Andor is a great example and there are very few examples in today's entertainment landscape of "showing not telling" the audience. Enjoyed your review. 6 stars, lol.

We seem enthralled with Andy Serkis for lots of reasons, but the Oscar/Emmy needs to go to Denise Gough for this episode. She was as menacing as any monster I have seen on screen anywhere. If you don't shudder when she delivers the "I suppose not." line of dialog, you're not paying attention. Denise's eyebrows should get a Best Supporting Actress Oscar as well. The subtlety of their movements was like watching a ballet.

Andor is a test of critics to me. It shines a light the critics that are evaluating a show for its content as opposed to those that are hating it because it is a Disney product. While I didn't finish Obi Wan, and dropped Mando after the first season, this show is amazing in it's plot and character development.

I just want to offer up praise for Andy Serkis, too. I think he's considered a 'character actor", which usually doesn't garner a lot of praise, in comparison to lead actors. Saying that, he is one of the strongest presences in the series, and cuts through the role of Kino like a lightsaber through butter(corn). He really is a brilliant actor, when you consider all the roles he's taken on. And, Kino is pretty much a simply a normal, human...person (as opposed to Gollum, Snoke, the merc in the MCA, etc.).

It took me two tries to get into it , but boy am I glad I did. The set design is some of the best I’ve ever seen in Star Wars. The dark synthy score is fantastic. A lot of people have a problem with the slow pace, but if you pay attention, it’s so rich in world building. This is by far the best content released in the Disney era. I would love to see more like this.

Obi-wan was about destroying another hero of ours. This show is true SW and it is wonderfully written. Tremendous character development and an excellent, dramatic and action packed storyline. I enjoyed the classic old cinema tricks used as we see in the headset placed on Bix and the door being closed leaving the horror to our own imagination as well as the camera pan to the boots walking by, we see this in the OG SW movies, love it! Disney got this right, Rogue one saves the day. AGAIN.

Here a thought Thor the capture of Cassian could be the best thing that could have happened to him. Because he disappeared with literally nobody knows where he's is, and where he's at he's not who he is. When he escapes he can really be a phantom because of the time that's passed since he's been gone. He can use his position of stealth to carry out future missions. 👁️

As someone who follows British politics I saw many parallels between the Empire and the recent activities of the British for example in Northern Ireland. In the 1970s following the beginning of 'the troubles' internment without trial was used as a tool, where entire streets had the young men lifted and thrown in jail under suspicion of association with the IRA. The hooded men were a group of individuals who were tortured using experimental methods similar to those of the show. I don't know it the parallel is deliberate but is certainly is stark. I wonder show that deserves awards.
