Fun fact: Glados paradox did work actually. If you look at the turrets boxes. When glados says the paradox. they all burn because of it. But it didn't work with wheatley because he's so stupid that he's immune to paradoxes.

No, they didn't but they have been trying to find it because they want the portal gun technology. GLADoS is only vaguely aware of the Combine's existence. There is a line from Portal 1 where she tells Chell "what's up there will make you WISH you were back in here. I have an infinite capacity for knowledge and I even don't know what's going. What I do know is that I am the only thing standing between us and them." (which alludes to the Combine)

When GLaDOS was temporarily killed, a lot of personality cores took over running the facility. They were able to keep it in decent shape until GLaDOS was turned back on. The timeframe of when the game takes place comes from the Portal 2: The Final Hours digital book that talks about the creation of the game. Portal 1 takes place around 2010, between halflife 1 and 2. However, they wanted to separate the two franchises a bit more, and decided to have the game take place far into the future. About 50,000 years in the future actually.
