A good friend is a retired engineer for the Southern Pacific RR (itself retired) and he meets monthly with other retired "rails." One of them was a telegrapher for the SP when they were still transmitting train orders (authority to run between two points on the railroad) by code. He brought a key and sounder to one of the meetings to demonstrate. Even in his nineties, he had a good fist on the straight key. Of course he sent American Morse code rather than international, but a few in the group understood it and "interpreted" it for the others.

Love this, Bill… is the rig a bit chirpy? Anyway, fun to see CW Homebrew! 73 Dave / W2DAB

I don't think the transmitter is chirpy Dave. I think you are hearing the receiver sidetone as being chirpy. I also notice hand capacitive effects. It has a free-running LC oscillator in both the mixer and the product detector. I think the receiver chirps a bit. 73 Bill

I always love to see contacts like this. I have run QRP for many years and have build, over time, several xtal transmitters with either a dc or regen receiver. I never have been disappointed and always thrilled in making contacts this way. 73 de WA4JAT 😀
