So, the 140 degrees for 60 min is to kill the bugs. That's supposed to be an internal temperature for 60 minutes also. It won't dry it as well as seasoning it, but it's the law in order to transport it across state lines. As I stated, it's to kill the bugs.

Kiln dried popple. That is ludicrous. Poor firewood, so why kiln-dry it in the first place? Same amount of water in the wood that needs to be gotten rid of.

My kilns take about 2 days to do oak.. the 60 min run is just to assure bugs are killed.. I run my kilns around 160-170 to get the oak from usually 32-34% to around 15%.. get a cargo container and insulate it and add a few fans and a couple dehumidifiers and a heat source.. I built metal racks that we can slide in and get around 8 cords at a time at an expensive of around 7 bucks a cord to dry.. working on a solar set up to get rid of even the elec cost of it..

I don't know anything about firewood kilns but many years ago now I ran a lumber kiln attached to a sawmill. I'd think the dying processes would be entirely different like the difference between night and day. Timber kilns are all about drying as fast as you can, evenly so the timber doesn't crack. Cracking doesn't matter for firewood and it'd actually be beneficial because the centres of sticks would get heated quicker. I'd guess a firewood kiln could have it's temperature jacked up to something below flash point and it'd probably take longer getting a kiln to temperature than the drying time would be. My kiln used electricity for fans and heat but I'd guess you'd want an energy source a lot more economical for firewood. Using cookie pieces and crotches seems an obvious source. The things you get me thinking about Chris. Kilns like you saw would be terribly inefficient because they are tiny and every time you unpack/repack them you lose all your heat. What about a kiln about the same size with a small railway line for baskets to run on so new baskets can be pushed through without ever having to turn the thing off or fully open it up. You'd need some fancy flap arrangements or swinging doors each end and depending on the temperature you could get the kiln to it might only take a couple of hours to dry sticks of firewood. I'm doing all the work here so I leave it up to you and your oven to workout temperatures and times. Now all I can think about is the snap, crackle and popping noises you'd get from a kiln like that. There's all sorts of ways to make money. What would it be worth to all the firewood producers for a same day seasoning service instead of 1 to 2 years?

@@InTheWoodyard Never been accused of that. I'm thinking a 40 ft shipping container and the large IBC totes that hold a face cord on wheels with a furnace hanging off the side forcing stinking hot air or just the furnace chimney with a spark arrestor through your kiln and out through regulated roof vents. Use container doors each end with a fire proof blanket hanging just inside the doors that baskets can be pushed under. I reckon that'll hold 9 totes or 3 cord at a time but I'm not known for my math either. Probably wouldn't need the roof vents because you'd have to remove the door rubbers so they'd probably leak enough to act as vents. Just to confuse you properly I'm a Tony too. Will the boss let you experiment with her oven?

If I had to guess the 140 degrees for 60 minutes is probably more for killing bugs like the emerald ash bore and others that are spreading and killing trees. The Kiln Dried thing is the phrasing with the law. It started as an attempt to try and prevent the spread of the ash borer, but clearly the bugs are going to do their thing anyway. I think it's dumb. I think it's even more dumb that the states even go as far as saying the wood must be "kiln dried" and go even further to define the minimum requirements to be called "kiln dried," even when it's not comepletely dried. I blame the governments for that, not the companies

About the kiln dried wood, other commenters don't have a clue, just spouting nonsense. The wood doesn't just go in the oven for 60 minutes, but rather several days - depending on your methode. Around here they use "exhaust" heat from biogas plants or from smaller energy plants that burn wood chips for electrictiy - the bigger producers get their stuff dried for free this way. In germany it means, that you need several sensors inside different pieces of wood and the wood is good when it reached an even temperature of above xx degrees for an hour. This then kills of all the bugs and so on. I tested kiln dried before, but it's supposedly 20% less energy, because it off gasses in the kiln already. That's why regular air dried is still more desirable. It's under 10% moisture initially and goes up like paper (can light a piece with a lighter, literally tried it). It's supposed to gain more water again if you leave it out for some time. The droplets you see under the shrink wrap are not from the wood still drying. You can have bricks under shrink wrap and it would collect droplets like that. This is of course, if it's done properly, like I described.

Where do those little metal crates they use for storing wood in come from, what was their original purpose? We have bigger ones here like that that originally had tanks in them. A forklift with a box tipper would be an ideal way of handling them.

140 for 60 minutes is just the minimum government requirement for firewood that may be transported. It's just to kill the insects that may be in the wood... the smoke from the firewood should take care of the rest of the bugs 🤣🤣

At a 1.50 a mile here in Canada you would be just breaking even on the drive. 1.60 a litre for gas here or 6 dollars a gallon. A pack of cigarettes is 20.50.
