SO many good topics discussed here....I have had so many thoughts rolling around in my brain since this whole STG thing has happened that I cant keep my head on straight. I am trying to just weather the storm and not freak out. I do hope we at the YTPC can hold up what made this community enjoyable. I personally dont care what people put out but I have to admit the pipe is what draws me to listen, discuss and become friends. What a time to be alive.

💯 the best thing about the YTPC was the escape of day to day stress. A reprieve from the grind that was thoroughly enjoyable. Stay calm and carry on YTPC

I can’t see this as being an effort to convert us a small number of pipe smokers into cigar smokers. The two tobacco types are so different. The expense hardly seems worth it. On the other hand rationalization of tobacco lines- from a company view makes huge sense. Cutting noise in the advertising and self competition. Also destroying production equipment and denying it to competitors does make sense. Ugly as it might be - and it is. I suspect our Canada Post will go the way of HM Post shortly. Mr. Simon: I think your supposition re STG is correct, but only one of a multi prong plan. First, start with their assumption that the pipe market is not growing. What to do? Maximize profits for the static market that, in all probability, will be regulated to death. Therefore squeeze every drop up to point of sending patient into premature cardiac arrest. Second, buy out competition so that cost of entry into market becomes prohibitive and permits one to maximize first prong … also provides rationale for scrapping good equipment. Third, which you fingered, try to convert existing pipe smokers to cigar customers. The term used for first part is usually called ‘SKU rationalization’ and it’s done on a rigid margin contribution basis. Re second aspect, remember that most tax codes permit write downs for many costs associated with ‘business integration’, so actual cost to acquiring company is not nearly as great as one thinks when looking from outside. The bet STG is making is that cigars will escape severe government oversight, but, remember, that cigars are still mostly being rolled-by-hand. Ergo if their bet is wrong, the exposure is reducing cheap headcount in 3rd world countries vs. a factory with expensive equipment. The only thing I’d admonish you re is that politics, at a certain level, can’t now be avoided because our hobby’s very fate is in the hands of government. To make your gloom complete, look at a video called ‘It Will Never Be Easier’ by @piperdave2023. He reads the current policy of UPS and FedEx re shipping tobacco related items and, basically, they both are prohibiting such even by those who have a license to sell tobacco. No bueno.

On the one hand, I'm all doom and gloom... knowing that many tobacco blends will be destroyed, the machinery will be destroyed, and in all likelihood, it's the end of cheap pipe tobacco in the USA. HOWEVER... eh, I don't know, maybe it is all doom and gloom for pipe smokers!! 😂😅😢 It's just annoying that our pipe smoking hobby/way if life is so under attack/threat by, of all things, corporate takeovers. So obnoxious. Gotta make a buck, gotta be THE ONLY MANUFACTURER. Just odd times we are living through.

Hi Simon, really enjoyed a pipe to your video this evening, I tried some OGS vintage that I’d had jarred up since August it was a lovely smoke, if a little more citrus then the original ogs. any way bang to rights the world affairs! Great chat
