I know so little about machining, I was a welder until retiring. I once ran a turret lathe at work for six months. Hated every minute, my training was here is the start button and stop buttons. I had no clue, set ups was nightmarerish. I used to think, hey this is kind of neat making a chunk of metal look like something else. My true love was sub-arc and mig welding. I was taught a lot by the old timers and a lot of trial and error. Since my childhood, I spent lots of time with my elders. They had stories and life experience to share. Well now you are one of my elders, not by much though. I'm in the seventies now, but I so enjoy your rants and stories, never tire of them. No matter what you post in the future, I'll be looking forward too, and watching. One thing I did learn running a lathe, how to break every shear pin in it with one shot. Took maintenance two weeks to fix. Running a turret into the chuck was the trick.

For nearly a decade before I retired you were the go to instructor for all new machinist. We had a computer and monitor in the toolroom and you don't know how many hours young machinist would stare at videos of yours learning an intricate operation. It must bring you a great sense of pride to realize that you slowly replaced the machinist's Bible. You do whatever makes you happy because at this point you certainly deserve it!

Mr. Pete, I am a postwar child (1948) here in the UK. We have just lost our last primary steel manufacturing plant in Port Talbot, Wales. A disaster that politicians will never notice or care about. I can’t believe it - UK, the country that invented the Industrial Revolution. There are still the those of us in the UK and USA who treasure invention, engineering and science - all combined in education, surely the lifeblood of civilisation. Where I live in Bolton, north of Manchester, I’m surrounded by younger families who don’t even own a hammer or screwdriver, so when we are all gone, the outlook will be bleak. Everybody sat at home in front of a computer looking at how things used to be made. Best wishes from the UK. 👍🇬🇧👍🇺🇸👍

Hi Mrpete. I’m 87 years old, hobby machinist plus doing some part time commercial work…I watch many of your videos to gain more knowledge. They all are absolutely perfect, so please don’t change anything. Just keep them coming.. ..my 12x24 Atlas/Craftsman lathe that I purchased new in 1959 is still in use. Complete with VFD, DRO and quick change tooling. Last year I bought a 12x36 Atlas/Craftsman lathe and fully rebuilt/restored it 20:59 completely…I have 4 lathes, 3 mills, honing machines along with arbor and hydraulic press, metal saw and welders. A very complete show that I truly enjoy.. I also volunteer 2 days a week as machinist in a community tech education center operated by our school system.

Mr. Pete, I'm ashamed of us as an audience for not watching the wonderful Reed/Sherr-Tumico video more! I enjoyed it immensely, and all your videos about the histories of these precision tool makers. I think you're right about the youth and their short videos (and I say that as a young viewer -- not yet 50!). I do hope you won't get hopelessly discouraged; your videos are exactly what I come to KZbin for. As for the tractors plowing, I watching with interest hoping to see some of my favorite Farmalls go by and was not disappointed. If you enjoy those events, maybe it would be easier to film the tractors off the field, owners starting them up and hooking up, etc. -- ask them some questions maybe ... I was particularly interested to see how many bottoms each model was pulling and how hard they seemed to be working. Keep up the good work!!

@@mrpete222 I think that's a failing in the audience more than the videos - and I bet if we dug into the numbers, over a period of years, we'd find that they generate more "long tail" views than a lot of other things. In some cases, yours may be among the best - or only - sources for some of that information. I suspect you are at a disadvantage having been on YT for so many years ... the competition has just grown and grown, and the way people interact with the site is more and more driven by "the algorithm" that presents them with whatever it things they'll want to watch. The more videos of bad drivers and kittens falling over there are, the harder it is to find the good stuff...

Thanks, Mr. Pete. I'm 71 and I always watch your vids and others to the very end. Being a creator, I understand your frustration. "Most and thankfully not all" of the young people today don't want to learn a craft for themselves. I can spend hours filming and editing a vid and it will do badly. Then I can make a short easy vid that I don't expect to do well, and it will do great. There is no rhyme or reason that I can see. So, thank you very much for your time and effort. Your channel is my favorite machining channel. Cheers from Clint in Virginia.

I am 62 years old, and retired from my very stressful job about 3 years ago, because I could, and it was getting to be to much and my health was suffering. Retired, and am feeling much better now! Anyway, I wish that there would have been a place like this where I could have gotten all the good pointers on machine work 30 or more years ago! I do have all your videos that you refer to, and am going thru some of them as time permits. In my Dad's garage/workshop, he had a nice 16"x 6' South Bend toolroom lathe, and a 1J Bridgeport mill, and a small Logan lathe. Since he passed away at 98 years, I moved into the old home place and am starting to get things organized and your video's are VERY helpful for producing some of the things I want to make. I want you to know I appreciate the efforts you put into your videos!

I have really enjoyed your videos over the last 10 yrs or so. Just like your comments about "graduating from My Shop Class with Mr. Pete", I too feel like I have seen enough content that it is not the same as in the beginning of this journey for me. Because of your instruction I have been able to fund some really good machine purchases by buying/rebuilding and selling old Lathes. I have rebuilt 10 Atlas, 2 Logan's & 2 South Bend's in the last 7 years. With each new sale I have been able to invest in all the tooling needed to support the ability to make my own repair parts.

Much wisdom in this video Mr Pete 👍👍 I have to confess that I definitely fall into the "Graduated" category. When I first set up my little workshop and got my lathe I watched hundreds of videos from many "workshop" KZbin creators. Once I had learned the skills I needed for my particular hobby, I watched less and less. These days I hardly watch any "workshop" videos. That being said I still watch your videos, why, well I for one like to hear you talk and I will continue to do so as long as you make them. So please, keep them coming. All the best, Alan.

KZbin changes what it promotes on a regular basis, and if you don't adapt you lose out. Your last temporary video did well because that's exactly what KZbin likes, in this case a talking head ranting about something, not polishing the ways on some old junk lathe. Maybe one day it'll change back to liking quiet long-form education over flashy hyped-up entertainment (but I doubt it).

Dear Mr Pete. Some years ago I was asked to teach a couple classes about electronics but more like “the practical way”. Ok. I accepted but soon discovered the pupils aged about 15 “couldn’t be exposed to temperatures above 80 deg C (176 deg F) because it could be too dangerous”. How could they use a soldering iron? Later on a friend who is a university teacher told me that he tried the same thing but that about half the pupils got burns in the first half hour of soldering iron manipulation. Young people in mechanical terms just know how to eat and manipulate the cell phone. Eventually something else below the belt.

I am also older and a hobby machinist and have a fairly good shop at home, better than most but not as extensive as yours. I know the machining world has gone CNC but in my opinion you still need the basics of machining to get the most out of CNC. The machinery handbook is still and will always be the foundation for what we do. Keep it up! Every time I turn on my computer I search to see if you have released a new video even if it is a rant. I do like some content more than others but that is normal in my opinion. There is obviously a lot of knowledge and ability sealed up in your head and we/I appreciate your willingness to share it.

I'm the same way watching Mr Pete , Keith Fenner and others unlike Matt Dillon,Mr Pete and Keith Fenner do produce new material but, I enjoy going back to " yesteryear" and watching Mr Pete make a Bell center finder !

I enjoy the rants but love to see you make things. It amazes me how well things turn out. None of your comparison videos were of you making a project. Would have been interesting to have one of those thrown in the mix.

I’m 44 years old and would really like to thank you for all you’ve done and are doing. I found your channel in 2011 when I was recovering from a work related back surgery, your videos got me through another two back surgeries over a ten year span and helped me in my career as a Cat marine diesel mechanic. You mean a lot more to people than you can imagine

Mr. Pete, I have been a fan of your channel for a long time. I just turned 49 over this past summer to give you an idea of my demographic... I have a KZbin channel as well and have not uploaded a new video in 6 years. I had published 137 videos before I stopped, the content was mostly welding, blacksmithing, and light machine work on my Atlas lathe and benchtop mill. I found it frustrating how I could work for hours making and editing a video, which was educational, for very little in the way of viewership. This is especially true when you see someone make a minute long video called .50cal vs. Lawnmower and it received more views in a day than my channel did in a month. What you do takes education, skill, and a talent for teaching. Anyone could put a cell phone in a hydraulic press and destroy it, not everyone can create something as you do. I go back to your videos on a fairly regular basis and use them for reference. Not only is there a lot if history here, you provide information that is often hard to find elsewhere. The internet is a strange place, but no matter how advanced it becomes there will always be libraries... Think of your videos like the reference books, vast sets of books they don't lend out and need to be read there. I personally want you to know that there are many people like myself who have benefitted from your time and dedication to this skilled trade and it feels almost impossible to thank you enough. Hope to see much more of you in the future! Take care.

Education is all I watch on KZbin. So you are #1. Plowing was great to me. We had a WD and a All Crop combine. I put in thousands of hours running them. At 1/2 to 3/4 acre per hour it took many hours to work 125 acres. Yes I have a Scheer-Tomeco micrometer and never knew the history of the company.

Hey Mr Pete, I’m 41 years young and I love watching your videos, I’m not great at commenting but I do watch almost all of your videos. I usually watch them on Saturday morning with a cup of coffee. I also really enjoy your rant videos. You remind me of my grandfather that passed away a few years ago. Not sure why but I just enjoy the story’s and opinions and world views. I’m not a diehard but I find myself coming back to the channel every few months. I recall that your channel was the first one I ever subscribed. Back in the 70s I ran a Bridgeport vertical mill, a Morey turret lathe and a four-gang Clausing drill press for a couple of years in my Dad’s business. I didn’t know much. The set-up man took care of everything. You’ve filled in a lot of gaps in my knowledge. Hope you stick around a while.

My acreage borders the remnants of the old Illinois Central railroad. Our town had the Rock Island and Illinois Central rolling through on their way to nearby Minnesota and South Dakota. Both long gone. I love old tractors so I'll watch a plowing video for awhile. Those events are worth attending.

You know you are watching a hard core machinist when his pointer is a screwdriver, grin.... I always watch to the end as I don't want to miss a thing, such as the description of "the illustrated man" and "that guy has his left turn signal on all the time." Yes, opinions are like noses, we all have one (cleaned up for You Tube), and our opinions are the same. Keep it up Mr. Pete, including that antique tractor plowing....

Mr. Pete, thank you for the video. I was speaking with my wife about your situation on KZbin. She has noticed that some of the AI reviewed videos don’t receive the level of engagement that human reviewed videos do. She also suggested that these Temporary Videos may hurt your engagement. You received 34,000 views and 2,000 comments on your last video. When you delete that video it may remove those records as a reference for the algorithm to promote your videos.

I enjoy and learn from all of your videos. Even the temporary ones that should remain permanent. Very Interesting to learn how YT evaluates and compensates creators for videos. I’m constantly amazed and disappointed at how many viewers completely miss the point of educational machining videos. Adam recently made a replacement shaft for a large lathe showing all the steps including single point threading and machining a 5/8 hex using an index head. Several viewers wondered why the guy “didn’t just order some hex stock and make the part himself with “a die and a file?” No appreciation at all of learning how a complete part can be machined and finished from raw 1144 stress proof stock on a manual lathe.

I'm also retired and work in my small machine shop as a hobbyist. I'm also a hobbyist watchmaker. I like Toppers channel and yours as well. I'm always learning something from the professionals, and the teachers. I think I end up creating a lot of tooling for both of those hobbies as wells as for woodworking applications. I have the same experience where I forget about certain KZbin content creators that I subscribed to a long time ago because KZbin stopped keeping me up to date with their videos and then all of a sudden I get a notification of the video from them out of the blue and find out I'm 100s of videos behind. I don't have time to catch up on them. I've been on KZbin for about 16 years. KZbin is constantly offering me videos from new channels as well. I think it's the nature of KZbin that the videos that take the least effort to make are the most popular. I would suspect that a video of a cat or dog running a lathe would be wildly popular.

Hi Mr Pete, agreed, I cannot fathom that people don’t enjoy learning! Hence I put stuff up on KZbin that I find interesting or enjoy, and if people watch, that’s great, but if none, then it’s there for posterity. I’ve not earned anything from my channel to date. In my view it’s not about popularity or fund raising, it’s about doing it for the love of sharing my knowledge and skills. I do think that many people do find your videos valuable - more valuable than 1 view per person would suggest. Perhaps it’s a sign of the times that you can say most American people are not making things themselves anymore. Perhaps with the rise of China and India local people don’t need to learn a trade anymore? Or they come home from a days machining work and the last thing they want is more machining? In Australia, its legislation- we have many laws to protect people from risk of injury. Sometimes they are appropriate but sometimes it smothers ingenuity. Our DIY costs also can exceed buying a product as materials are sometimes hard to get and so expensive! Just another observation, I watch your videos, but I’m in Australia, so I won’t bother with videos that discuss the history of a USA centric company. I have no connection so I can’t relate, so at best I’d watch for your sake to earn another few cents. Being hyper focussed on “USA made” also doesn’t exactly encourage foreign viewers, nor viewers who can’t afford the USA brand names. China also makes really good products but people want cheap, so labelling all Chinese products as “cheap junk” is not valid. It’s about how much the user can or is willing to pay. Anyhow, thanks for your time and effort to make educational videos that I look forward to using when I retire and have time to make something. Your vertical 48” grinder is one!
