The 5 pole conversion on the 2-6-4 sounds appealing. You are so right about not leaving them unattended. Sometimes I think my trains know when I leave the room or turn my back for a minute and they play up, it's like attention seeking behaviour 😄

What a gem Jonathan. If it was running poorly then I would say yes to a conversion but it is running superbly. I hope you try the 5 pole armature in something that is running poorly. With knuckle type couplers it is important to ensure that they are all at the same height or they will uncouple. All the best, David.

Nice to see Wrenn City of Stoke on Trent……I would certainly like to see that with a 5 pole motor in. Pleased you converted the utility van, yes I am to blame for suggesting it! Just one thing with Wrenn models which I have found on some (particularly Tenders) the “stops” for Dublo couplings are not always quite the correct spacing….wonder if that could be a reason for separating if they lose tension on those reverse bends. Dublo couplings seem to run for half an hour ok then start separating. One of life’s great mysteries!
@MrSnooze11 ай бұрын
I've been looking at this again and the stops seem absent. I will see if I can make a small modification. I also need to slightly adjust the height of the coupling. Thanks for looking, all the best to you

@garethparkin949811 ай бұрын
Yeah so I bought the chassis first this had been reconditioned then the body. I initially ran it with an old Mainline Stanier tender that was spare this fit quite well actually but thought to finish it off it needed a Wrenn tender so kept an eye out and eventually found one. But as you say it was fun gathering the bits and getting a running model for the fraction of the price if you were to buy complete.

I find my SOT runs really well even with a three pole. I suppose it's preference really
@MrSnooze11 ай бұрын
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the three pole armature. They run well. I think the five pole will have a good slow start and slow running. Best regards to you
@johnd889211 ай бұрын
It will be interesting to see how the Wrenn 5 pole armature performs in detail. I have seen comments over the years that it did not deliver the expected improvement. Unless people did a ham fisted conversion and lost magnetism and or the lesser known ball bearings in the motor. These days remagnetising is much more available to keen modellers thanks to Mr Dodd as is the ball bearing issue.
@MrSnooze11 ай бұрын
You are right about those thrust balls. If lost, a motor runs very badly. Take care, all the best to you

Hi,What another beautiful Wrenn Coronation Class loco.The City of Stoke on Trent in LMS black straw and crimson lining and wartime black livery is.I have handled most of the Wrenn Coronation engines and this black loco has to be a favourite of mine.I have handled 3 down the years and kept one ''mint boxed''for my Wrenn collection.Its a pity George Wrenn never upgraded the scale driving wheels,maybe a bit expensive.I have acquired on e bay a few old Dublo Coronations with scale Romford wheels fitted in the sixties and seventies.One LMS Atholl 2 rail convert cost me only £24 plus postage about 8 years ago.I have Wrenn Cities London BR maroon,Liverpool in LMS maroon,the Dublo 3 rail Liverpool is finished in BR maroon and an expensive item,Birmingham BR green,Glasgow in beautiful BR and the Stoke on Trent in LMS wartime black.I remember these locos retailing at £11.95 in the mid seventies.Happy memories.

It would be great to see a comparison of 3-pole and 5-pole pulling power and slow-speed running in any suitable wrenn or dublo loco - I'm sure you would apply your trademark methodical and thorough approach to the endeavour, and make an entertaining video as well. Like Martin says, perhaps choose a loco that is in need of improvement, although that wouldn't be a fair comparison, but you could still compare the 5-pole recipient with another similar good 3-pole loco, perhaps even side by side running on the two main lines if you have enough coaches (I'm pretty sure you do!)
@MrSnooze11 ай бұрын
That sounds like a great experiment, I shall bear it in mind. Thanks for looking, best regards to you

I tend to think that if it aint broke, don't fix it, and leave the City of Stoke alone. If I had that 5 pole motor, I would put it in my most troublesome loco, or retain it for when I actually need it. Martin.

Be very interesting to see a 5 pole comparison but I think it needs to be against a 3 pole that is running well so that any differences can be attributed to the armatures and not perhaps a poor 3 pole. I used to think 4 cylinder engines were fine until I got a 6 and I'd never go back.....
@MrSnooze11 ай бұрын
I might be wrong but I was lead to believe a straight six engine was almost perfectly balanced. They are very smooth. I shall devise a good test for the five pole item. Take care, all the best to you
