Working on something like that seems so cool. I've always been a fan of everything that has lights (especially LEDs) and that move (robots) :) Electronics and motors and everything in general. And Id like to do hands on work like fixing stuff like that or setting stuff up rather than working in a office in front of computer, drawing motors in CAD or whatever those office people do. And I especially like the aspect that with service work you can go to "restricted" areas :) Just somehow seems so cool that you get to be behind the scenes at shows like that or at places like airports etc where you could go through the "staff only" doors ;)

Somewhat odd dichotomy there - fitting apparently powered with a fancy connector (is that a PowerCON?) that is rated for outdoor use..... but the control box still attaches with a standard 8P8C Ethernet connector. Would have really expected a Commando plug and a four pin XLR myself.... but what do I know.
@RichardT21128 жыл бұрын
Now that is what I call an office with a view!!
@RobertSzasz8 жыл бұрын
Does the control system let you manually point one light and slave others to point at the same thing? It would take a bit of processing power and a 3d model of the area, but some very cool effects could be done.
@ematson58978 жыл бұрын
Yes they do. The lighting consoles that run this kind of show are really advanced (and expensive, just look up grandMA 2 full size). They include a lot of functions to make controlling hundreds of lights easier, and most do include a 3d visualizer. With big shows like this, people program everything ahead in the visualizer and just make small adjustments at the actual venue
@bigclivedotcom8 жыл бұрын
The whole rig is emulated in 3D at the lighting desk area.
@ematson58978 жыл бұрын
+bigclivedotcom Are they using one of PRG's consoles or are they using an MA or a Hog?
@bigclivedotcom8 жыл бұрын
Hogs and WYSIWYG.
@RobertSzasz8 жыл бұрын
I assumed the programming emulates the whole rig. I was wondering if it was smart enough to take input from a manually pointed unit and assign others to point at the same object. I can see scenarios where being to spotlight a audience member or other unpredictable position would be nice. I know there are auto follow systems available but the commercial ones I know about need a person rigged with a tracker.

Similar to his other video in which he takes a different moving head light apart. They are all based on the same principle of light source (be it incandescent, discharge, LED) Then goes through lens, gels, gobos'. Varys between makes and models.

All the lights are the same (PRG Best Boys) and all of them are capable if full network control from the main lighting desk, but the ones I was working on are in a semi-automatic mode where they can be moved freely by manual operators with some of the functions controlled locally and some from the desk.

We have a lot of lighting on the gantries, down at the arena level and in the castle itself plus all the power distribution equipment and data networks. We are there for every show in case of technical problems. If there are any special effects used on the arena during the show we also have cues to take the equipment into it's position on the arena and operate it.

Great to see my favourite electrical guru in his natural habitat although I hope he didn't drop any screws or other detritus from that great height ? Being afraid of heights myself there is no way I would have attempted it but if I had I think I would have taken a towel or cloth with me to wrap around the equipment in order to catch any such items. Does that make me a nervous irrational bodger ? I hope so ;-)
