We went through there a few years back going to the area that has the sand dunes. We stopped at the restaurant that is at the back of that Conoco gas station to eat. It was fall & the trees where really pretty. We took some pictures. The church is really pretty as well. We were staying at Toas at the Earth Ships & went on a day trip up through there.

I moved here when I retired, and it is a great place to do nothing. Pace is very subdued. Great views over la Vega, sunrises and sunsets. We do have three places to eat (pizza/subs, burgers at Piccadilly Pizza, as well as Mrs. Rio's Tai/Mexican food and Sonia's Convenience Store, which has traditional Mexican comfort food, including Frito pies and menudo on Saturdays). The downtown area is getting improved all the time thanks to grants. There are a lot of dogs running around, though. My neighbor calls it Dog Town.

Just checked the temp in San Luis, it,s 76 degrees. I so jealous, I am here in North Texas under a heat dome. Last 2 days 106 and 108! Rusty is staying cool!

Ft. Garland is 16 miles away, straight north on Hwy 159, just like the sign says near the school on the way out of town. I don't mean to be picky, but if you're going to use numbers, use the right numbers. You're right about San Luis being laid back, but it's part of the US and has the drug/thug "night raider" pissant crowd of fenny foil smokin' zombie thieves. I live here. You need a dog and 2A to keep your castle safe. Just sayin.@@doneown503

And right now she's the best place for groceries while R&R (now the "San Luis Food Co-op") sits idle for major renovation. Her store is a convenience store as well, but it's really more of a mercado. She makes her own tamales, hot sauce, menudo (on Saturdays), banana bread, and tacos, burgers, and frito pies. She also has pizza (Hunt Bros.) breakfast sandwiches and burritos (they aren't breakfast "tacos" if it's a wrapped flour tortilla). In late August she starts roasting chiles (from Pueblo) and you can smell it at my place two blocks away. Other places to eat are Picadilly Pizza (The Pic) in the back of Central Oil (Conoco). They have subs and other sandwiches and specials (just went under new ownership) and the only bar in town. Great place to watch football and hang out. Mrs. Rios is further down the road (next to the other dispensary) and has Mexican, American and Asian food (Thai and Chinese). It's a great little town with a real sense of history and culture. If you want to see it at its liveliest, come to the Fiesta de Santiago y Santa Anna in late July. It's been going on for over 170 years. This place rocks in the summer, but you better have plenty of firewood for winter. Hella frio then.
