I had a cat with a similar tumor, removing the leg is so much more humane than repeatedly putting them through stressful surgeries for sure. All the best for many more years as a happy, healthy tripod!

Except for the part that now he'll have constant problems with his hips. This wasn't the more humane choice, it was the lesser of two evils.
@Kram10325 жыл бұрын
@@dominic.h.3363 being the lesser evil would make it the more humane choice though?
@dominic.h.33635 жыл бұрын
@@Kram1032 He will have to significantly decrease his activities so his hip wouldn't be a constant source of problem and the target of a different series of treatments and surgeries, and being less active he will require a strict diet so he doesn't get obese which would just make matters worse. Even if it was the right choice, I wouldn't call this "humane", it was logical and that's the end of it. There was no "humane" alternative in this situation, going with the best option out of a limited set of options doesn't automatically make that choice "humane".
@Kram10325 жыл бұрын
@@dominic.h.3363 I'd say that's the same thing as "better" not meaning "good". Even if it's not humane in an absolute sense. It's *more humane than* the alternative.
@dominic.h.33635 жыл бұрын
@@Kram1032 Yea, well, if that's your definition of humane, then by all means, this was the humane choice.

What an oddly appropriate time for this video to come. My 12.5 year old dog just had surgery today to remove a very large tumor on her chest. They warned us that it may be the type that keeps coming back so now we are waiting for the results. Now it’s time for her to be separated from our other dog and neither are happy. I’m so glad Cas is healing well and that he was able to be reunited with Sera! We wait for that happy day here as well! Good luck!

Oh man Cas is moving like that two weeks after amputation! That’s fantastic, he’ll build that strength and coordination and be unstoppable. I love the foxes so much and I was worried about Cas after the last update (I know I’m a few months late here, I’m playing a bit of catch up) but I’m thrilled to this. Out of a terrible situation with a bunch of terrible choices, I fully believe you made the right decision. Anyway you turn the problem around it always comes back to him being comforting and happy. Any option besides this one would led to serious discomfort many times, multiple surgeries and a absolute ton of stress. I commend you on an insanely difficult challenge well-met.

Our dog lost two toes to a benign cancer. He's a Beauceron, a breed with double dewclaws, so now we joke that he's (exaggerated sigh) normal, now. He still has all his dewclaws, but both left legs are missing a toe. He just turned twelve last May, though, and we're afraid he's reaching the end. :(

Yeah, I walked a little 14-year old terrier who was riddled with cancers. His front right paw was completely atrophied. The vet offered to remove the leg but there was no guarantee in that case that it would get all the cancer. He limped around on three legs and I would hold his leash in such a way to let his harness give him some support. The owners opted to treat him with medication which I gave to him in the afternoons in bits of cheese. He knew exactly how many pieced of cheese he was entitled to. He was a sweet dog but passed away last winter.

We had a cat that got out, was attacked by a great horned owl, and was dropped from ~40 feet up. He ended up surviving, incredibly, but to save him, he lost his front right leg. We were so worried that he wouldn’t be able to still jump and run properly, but after a month he had no problem bouncing up stairs, jumping on our couches, and cuddling up for pets. 3 legged animals are so resilient! What a hard decision for any animal carer to make, but I definitely agree that your decision is the best in the long run. If a similar sort of issue happened to any of my animals, I would certainly make the same choice, especially as they get older and anaesthesia becomes more risky and recovery more difficult.
