Most of these movies are 1. Very old and 2. CGI was very expensive at the time. So saying movies like Langoliers (1995), Scooby-Doo (2002), Deep Blue Sea, (1999) all had relatively low budgets that wouldn't have been able to afford much better CGI. Secondly, some movies are better looking that way, like Scooby-Doo. I mean, it's a kid's movie, most movies made for kids look like that because it's goofy, and most kids like goofy. Also, seriously? Did the Langoliers really break the fucking movie? That's just stupid. It's like less than 5 minutes and they aren't as bad as some of the CGI on this list. If 5 minutes of less than decent CGI ruins a movie for you, then you have some fuckin' problems. Also the snakes from SoaP were pretty decent for it's time, so having it on the HM is pretty ridiculous.

When these movies were made, alot of this CGI was cutting edge for the time and the best they could do - many of us had never even seen CGI in movies at all before this and only in intro's to games. Stuff like Toy Story and Antz were the only animated CGI movies that existed. Saying now that it's shit.. well of course, look at any 3D game on the PS1 - most of them look like vomit, but at the time they looked great. Well, they didn't even show the true 1997 Jabba. It was the 2004 one, 1997 one looked far worse and 2004 wasn't really that bad. It could be more slippery, eyes should be wider and more red and he should have some slime around his mouth, yet he was actually quite good and completely not like in a video game. Look at 2004's Star Wars KotOR 2 and its Hutts with spiky foreheads. Comparing movie Jabba to video game Vogga would be an insult for the first one and a compliment for the latter. 2004 Jabba was quite realistic, he could use some slime on his skin, but it was you who made it look worse. You chose the blurry 2004 edition where Jabba seems unnaturally crispy as compared to the evnviroment, whereas the same CGI Jabba on 2011 crispy Blu-Ray version looks far more natural, as it has got closer crispness level to his enviroment.

@bigjermini8 жыл бұрын
I hate to say it, but these effects were pretty decent for their time and budget for some, excluding wolverine and Green Lantern. I think it's a combination of the fact that CGI and the artists, get better over time, so the older works don't hold up good when they aren't exactly on par. As well, we tend to hold everything up to Jurassic Park's standards(the first one), even movies that came before it. And really if you watch Avengers, with the knowledge that it's 90% CGI, then watch Jurassic Park, the dino's look fake af, except the mechanical T-Rex. We can't really look at the old movies now and just say the CGI was bad. We have to take into account of other factors as well. When we watched them back then, they didn't look terribly awful or too out of place. The older ones we didn't notice the first time around, but do after better tech and artists came about. Mortal Kombat 1,2 had awesome effects for their time, but look bad now. Lu Kang's dragon animality was a bit off even then, but what was worse was that dang demon noskin beast thing that ate Jade and Jax was beating on. WTF, why the budget had to run out there? Langoliers and Deep blue Sea and Anaconda 3, are SciFi channel movies. They never had good CGI. Lost in Space. The whole movie had bad CGI so the monkey kinda fit in lol. Scooby looked more fake than that girl's skin transform. And the other effects were horrible too. Green Lantern. My guess is they wanted to go more cartoonish, vs MCU's current sort of realistic take. Still waiting on a new GL movie to do it better. Also I didn't know his mask was full CGI so that was actually a win. Birdemic should have been #1 as that was so horrible, even for SciFi channel. Note, I do not support "syfy" spelling, even if that is how the company changed it.
@bigjermini8 жыл бұрын
Emmett Brown eh?
@coreyweatherford32977 жыл бұрын
Deep Blue Sea and Langoliers are not sci-fi channel movies dude. I don't even think Anaconda 3 was, pretty sure it was direct go video. Just because they frequently play them doesn't mean they made them. Most of your other points also made little sense. Jurassic Park still looks great for the most part, and so does The Avengers.
@ralphyetmore7 жыл бұрын
No. Jurassic Park came out in '93. The CG in that film still holds up. Most of these entries came out years later. I'll only defend HULK as a stylistic decision. Ang Lee was attempting a comic book aesthetic.
@Sand_Hanitizer057 жыл бұрын
I bit long...
@defiraphi7 жыл бұрын
Langoliers was a miniseries so it has lower budget . Anaconda 3 is a direct on dvd movie so it is normal that these sort of movies has bad cgi effects . Deep Blue Sea was a decent movie except for that scene with Samuel L Jackson the movie got dumped down wow... also it is an action movie and not science-fiction based . We had better effects back then look how Event Horizon was compared to some years later Hulk and Green Lantern did is very poorly yes . Mortal Kombat Annihilation was a B-movie and also think it was a direct on video as the cheap cgi-effects were a hommage to Ray Harryhausen it has somewhat the same feel . Anyway comparing blockbusters that has millions $ as budget to B-movies, miniseries and direct on dvd that has only thousands $ is silly imo .

"Most" of these movies are "old." 8/13 of the movies are 20 years old or younger; 6/13 are 18 years or younger (61.54% aren't old enough to drink; 46.15% are from the new millennium). I'd say that debunks the "most" part. As for "old", that's a subjective description. Every single one of these movies is younger than I am, so they're automatically not old to me. The oldest addition to this list is from 1995, and that's only 23 years ago (and it was a made for TV mini-series, not a movie). And about half of these movies are from after the year 2000. The statement that "most of these movies are old" is simply false. Especially when older movies (Jurassic Park, 1993) had better effects (effects made by the same people as some of these other installments even!).

sometimes when you are a movie director and you see that the final result is ugly as fuck, as a movie director, you have to decide to change it. fuck. in the 70's there where the original Star Wars, and they effects were good looking

Chaos Burke Bullshit. Not only is convincing CGI almost impossibly hard, it ages ludicrously fast. All of the Slimer effects from the original Ghostbusters still hold up, and that film is more than thirty years old. I guarantee that if you watched Avatar or 10,000 BC again, you'll think its starting to look like a cartoon. Both Lord of The Rings, Jurassic Park and the 2005 King Kong remake are looking pretty flat these days as well. Because fundamentally CGI IS like trying to put a cartoon character into a real scene. I guarantee that ten years from now somebody will put another comment in youtube that says "If it's anything after 2015 you don't have an excuse for bad cgi".

I disagree with the list. Everything in the 1990s should be stricken from the record. CGI wasn't as good then as it is now, you can't really compare it.

So movies like T2 and Jurassic park were a fluke?
@A_Fresh_Art9 жыл бұрын
Matt Martindale those movies were largely practical effects over CGI. Yes some CGI was used but not as widely used through out the movie as you would think.
@badassplayer10009 жыл бұрын
Matt Martindale They were high budget movies compared to other ones at that time. Nowadays You can produce some good CGI with low budget.
@AJTV019 жыл бұрын
Dustin B At the same time, King Kong (the original) had pretty good CGI decades before any of these movies so there's no excuse for them to suck. Ex: Terminator was the late 80s so any movie from the 90s shouldn't look this shitty lol.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine. They ruined Deadpool. They sealed his mouth so he went from the Merc with a Mouth to Merc with no Mouth. Not to mention, they gave him arm blades and laser beam eyes. This is *NOT* canon. It's noncanonical. This isn't canon to the character. Then his costume design looks like Sean Connery in Zardoz. Thank Glob Ryan Reynolds doesn't have a disgusting amount of chest hair.🔫😾

Ok, where's Birdemic? Also, Green Lantern' effects weren't that bad, in fact, I can understand it because the suit & mask are made of energy, so, I would think having a real suit would kinda defeat the purpose of an energy made suit. Another thing: any of those dishonorable mentions would be worse than Green Lantern.

Christian Hannah I agree, and that's why I kind of give the suit and mask a pass. But I still think they could've looked better. Maybe if it wasn't CGI spandex...
@sbnewsom9 жыл бұрын
Christian Hannah I thought that too. People are complimenting "HULK" yet I thought Green Lantern's CG was a lot more digestible than half the shit in this video. Even though less CG the better is always awesome, I still don't think puppets are a better alternative unless properly done (which can be EXPENSIVE)

You guys DO realize many of these movies were using state of the art CG for the time and they literally couldn't do any better yet, right? Also regarding the "space monkey" for Lost in Space... As far as I recall the original TV series did have a "space monkey", which was alternatingly played by a small person in a cheap ape suit and an actual chimp with a cheap prosthetic piece on it's head... (Go google "lost in space debbie" or "debbie the bloop"..) So saying insulting things like "the series probably had better effects" when basically everything about the effects in the movie stood head and shoulders above the series shows just how little research you do when putting together these ridiculous lists... Also "it's obvious the actors had nothing to work with", as far as I'm aware is incorrect... They did have a puppet on set, which was enhanced/replaced with CG, because apparently the practical puppet effect just wasn't working out..
@zillauniverse72086 жыл бұрын
TehZee but theses effects didn't age well
@ZeeZeeBun6 жыл бұрын
And? A lot of practical effects haven't aged well... Like half the 80's movies that used puppets or low budget animatronics... And if you think most of todays CG or practical effects will look good in 20 years, you've got another thing coming...
@Richard_Nickerson6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the statement that "these movies were using state of the art CG for the time and they literally couldn't do any better yet" is simply false. Just look at the dates they were released and at the dates of quality CGI movie releases... 8/13 of the movies on this list are 20 years old or younger; 6/13 are 18 years or younger (61.54% aren't old enough to drink; 46.15% are from the new millennium). The oldest addition to this list is from 1995, and it was a made for TV mini-series, not a movie. So, it could not have had the best CG at the time (because that's reserved for huge blockbusters, not TV mini-series). Jurassic Park was released in 1993, and the effects were performed in part by ILM. ILM being George Lucas's company, also worked on all the Star Wars movies. So, ILM made better CGI in 1993 than they did in 1997. And Jurassic Park holds up better today than every single entry on this list. Lord of the Rings came out 2001-2003, around the same time and/or before about half the entries on this list. Yet Lord of the Rings holds up better than everything on this list that came after it. Lord of the Rings holds up better than The Hobbit, which was made by the same people and had a bigger budget in addition to better technology. Don't be so naive as to insist that any of these movies got the best they could have gotten.
@Richard_Nickerson6 жыл бұрын
TehZee Again, the oldest entry on the list is from 1995. It's pretty obvious they don't expect higher quality out of movies from the 80's or earlier, otherwise this list would have been comprised entirely of films from that time period.
