For the second time in a month, I caught a PanAm freight train going south on the old Billerica and Bedford Branch Line to deliver cars to the customers in the old Boston Globe Plant.

Ok so according to the other videos highlighting this line, The narrow gauge came up through the center of town behind the mall, behind O’Connor hardware and then crossed Andover Rd and made its way back toward North Billerica Station. The line also ran on the west side behind the high school and down next to Pro fitness and crossed Boston Rd at Heritage Rd and headed toward North Billerica station. My question is where did the 2 tracks meet?

Interesting. Was that a Geep 40 leading? Looked at # of roof fans watchin the video to determine if it was just that! Nice catch!

Is the line now defunct, brother?

The line is used as a alternate route to the former B&M shops when there is MBTA traffic, and they cant enter via the mainline.

Is line still open or is closed.
@Maine_Railfan4 жыл бұрын
Its open, just when MBTA traffic prevents them from entering via the mainline.

If the crossing are clearly marked, why Flagg them?
@25mfd4 жыл бұрын
while clearly marked, there's no "live" protection (lights/gates)... so for motorists protection (and to keep the railroad from being SUED) they flag the crossing
@Maine_Railfan4 жыл бұрын
And if they flag it, they don't have to blow the horn.

Why don’t they have lighted signals there if it’s active?
@Maine_Railfan4 жыл бұрын
@@snpshtgy1 signals cost upwards of $100,000.00 depending on the crossing, so it doesn't make sense to waste the money on a branch which is used a few times a year. Plus signals use around $1,000.00 a year worth of power, and where the line is used little, the crossings would have to be flagged anyway since rust on the rails would require a rust order to be in place.

@@Maine_Railfan LED Signals wouldnt cost anywhere near that to operate. I wasnt looking for a gate/arm...just lighted signals. Safety shouldnt come with a price tag.

By aren’t there lighted warning signals here if the line is active?
