Alright let's hear it, what are your thoughts on this weird little piece of fender history?

Did you check the 30+ Princeton schematics at el34world? 5c2, 5d2, 5e2, 5f2, 6g2, aa964, aa1164, etc??

Aa964 has 1 cap at the V that's missing that 25/25 cap. That's as far as i got though.

@@J.C... 5xx are all tweed, 6g2 is brownface. 964 is blackface non reverb, 1164 is blackface with reverb.

The 12at7 is the reverb driver and both cathodes are combined together and you only need one bypass cap

Early 70's had a lot of shenanigans in electronics. The kaliedoscope wires is likely cause they had to take whatever wire they could get, huge undersupply of copper at that moment. Viet Nam telecom network, LBJ, Ladybird, Anaconda copper, all that stuff. My dad's company was disassembling old transformers to reuse the magnet wire to wind the transformers they needed cause copper wire was almost impossible to acquire for any but the biggest corps. I bet if you bend the leads on that cap about 3 more times you can get them to break, dont let up now.

The missing bypass cap was done intentionally to reduce the gain of V2 (reverb driver). I suggest leaving it as is.

Remove the original cap can and put the JJ cap can in the hole. Drill two screw holes for the mounting bracket. May need to enlarge the cap can hole a bit. This will be the cleanest replacement and allow plenty of room for the bias pot.

Owner wants to keep the original can cap. Would definitely need to enlarge the hole too, the JJ's pins on the ends are just a hair wider than the existing hole diameter. The only working idea I have is to get one of those cap brackets you see on vox's to hold it down + silicone and then I'd need to flatten the original can cap pins and silicone over those as well. Otherwise individual caps placed where they'll fit + little terminal strips. TBD!

I had not such great luck with the cap caps sold through Antique Electronics...the first one was no good, the second one is still working. When I sent back the first one, they said that they could not find anything wrong with it. I told them that the second one that I bought works fine (it does for now). They acted like a refund was doing me a Big favor.

Get a direct replacement CE Mfg can cap, 40/20/20/20µF, from Amplified Parts and give that horrendous JJ cap back to the customer.

It seems those CE caps have a really bad reputation so he's looking to avoid putting one in and have issues
