Diode lasers work on the visible light spectrum and will more likely burn plastic than mark it. They’re not likely to mark white, blue or orange as the light doesn’t get absorbed without additives in the plastic. You should also test the plastics for harmful chemicals before engraving them. For safer operation and better marking look into a Fiber or UV laser, which granted can be pricy. You may be better off building something into the first layer of your models and doing a filament change to a different color.

Another option would be an Ember Prototypes custom PEI plate, but he’s taking a break from accepting new orders at the moment. Love the videos. Love the journey. Good luck.

Curious to see what the air quality is if you turn the ventilation off and/or open those doors.

Hey my man, I like your laid back attitude and vibe. What kind of camera & lens setup do you use? Drop some affiliate link! Godspeed

Bro what lens is this? I know your room is not that deep, but that first lens makes it look gigantic

It's the Laowa 10mm lens! I made a video about it. Pretty crazy lens and insanely wide

Could you try some kind of powder over the white pla to fuse it into the surface with the laser power?
@JoelSchat
@JoelSchat 23 күн бұрын
Oh interesting, that's a great idea that I will try out. Any idea what type of powder?
@AndrewHelgeCox

@JoelSchat the nylon powder used in SLS printers was on my mind, but the world's your oyster. There would be inert powders that just absorbed the laser energy, heated, and embedded themselves by melting the plastic underneath like graphite maybe. There would be those that melted like the nylon. Not I think of it, films would also be an option. Sheet materials or liquids that dried / cured onto the surface and could be washed away from areas untouched by laser.

@@Rootkitdev on it! I did make a recent video about how I made the top down filming rig, but I'll definitely do a camera gear one soon

A doctors mask will do nothing. You need an actual respirator
@ReidMain
@ReidMain 23 күн бұрын
Yeah I’ll give a +1 to this. At least an N95 mask but ideally an 3M respirator with filters specifically for the type of fumes you’re generating. Easy to pick up at Home Depot in Canada.
@JoelSchat
@JoelSchat 23 күн бұрын
Ya that's what I figured. I spent most of the time out of the room while it was engraving. I'll be picking up one of those respirators for the future for sure!
@sciencesaves
@sciencesaves 23 күн бұрын
@@JoelSchat easiest thing would be to put a hood over the workspace or make an enclosure for your laser engraver and then vent out. Those respirator filters are pricey
@JoelSchat
@JoelSchat 23 күн бұрын
Oh I like that idea. A drop down hood that vents out the fumes could definitely work!

Good content, but I had to stop watching. I'm running printers here and the clicking of the music was driving me crazy. The volume of the background music is also too high. Chill that out a bit and I think your videos will be much more watchable.
