Hi bro, How many historical data years are needed for a reliable optimizing and backtesting. for example if there be an EA that has nice profitable results for 2013 till now but is loosing befor 2013 . is it reliable and good?

no, for this the expert advisor developer should update his expert continuously depending on the market status to avoid losing money

Good question. Not sure if there is "reliable" backtesting ;) But in general I would suggest to always test as long as possible and then try to put the results into perspective. So if this EA is not performing before 2013 you could ask yourself why this is. Maybe you will find a reason. But maybe there is none and then you will just have to decide if it is okay for you. The future is always uncertain anyway, so trading is always a bit of a gamble when looking at one single strategy/symbol.

In my own portfolio are only 2 selfwritten EAs that perform continuous over many years in live accound. Most of my strategies written as an EAs works in special phases of a market for some month. So i have to activate and deactivate my EAs or have to modify the settings. Backtesting is for me only to test the function of the code and will not tell the truth aboud a result in live acc. Backtesting is used most from developers to sell there products ... Think what you want, why they do so? This are only my personal notes, have a good time.

@@EemanAlipour In a backtest you can do some things to get a overview of a strategie. So you can do a Backtest over a couple of years and than do a forwand-test also in strategytester for the next couple of month. But you can only see a tendence and you have to understand what the tester can give you. In addition you have to understand the settings of the tester and you need 100% clean data for a test. In my opinion: Most important is: Your personal trained eyes on an absolute clean chart to detect a strategy. All the stuff around is just coding and checking ...
