I LOVE JOHNNY RIVERS! Because of this single I bought one of his UA "Best Of" albums. I was a sophomore in HS. Ended up falling hopelessly for "Poor Side of Town".

@@kevingoins9858 His only #1 hit...and the only one he wrote (along w/Lou Adler). I've often wondered if he got that result why didn't he write more songs? 13 year span of hit singles during a very competitive decade + of time.

@@t40onbass Johnny wrote tunes prior to Poor Side Of Town but those remained album tracks. He soon realized that it was best to hire songwriters (Jimmy Webb, Willie Hutch) and be a music publisher (Up-Up and Away, By The Time I Get To Phoenix) than to write.
