I've been an apprentice for four years now and it has been tough. I've only just started to tattoo and building my own clientele and to be honest I couldn't be happier. I've wanted to tattoo since I was 13 years old and now 10 years later I've finally achieved my goal! I totally agree with everything that Anrijs says in this video. It's tough but anyone can get there if you just put your mind to it :) x

They most likely used her to clean & not get paid. It can take that long but it all depends on how much effort you put on it too. So four years is way too long to tattoo. You should’ve already tattooed after 1 maybe 11/2 years at least

i have been an apprentice tattooer for about 4 months now and i also do some reception which includes cleaning/checking inventory/ making appointments/take phone calls etc... although i also tattoo! i wouldn't be able to live on the just the tattoo revenue which is less than 10 to 20 $ per tattoo and i do about two to three per day but mixed with the 40 hour pay from reception i can do what i love and my side job is already at my place of work! Go for your dreams no matter what it is, if you have passion for the art you will see progression if you step out of your comfort zone once and a while :)

how long did you tattoo before you asked for a apprenticeship?
@zacharyhorvath36154 жыл бұрын
such a good video, I watched this about a year ago, a few months before getting the apprenticeship I'm currently in. My main hangup was that I didn't have many tattoos, and that I was really nervous to have my drawings evaluated. The way I approached shops was to just ask them if they weren't busy if they had the time to look through my drawings and sketchbooks to get some direction, and I was always treated with respect. I think the only reason that I got in was due to the fact that my sketchbook was mostly drawings from life. I have always felt that if I can learn to capture the likeness of the world around me, that I would get better at drawing from my imagination. Being an apprentice is difficult, but I'm learning a lot, and I see a huge improvement in the quality of my work. Thanks for this video

The problem is that young people just want to go straight and tattoo. The draw part is the backbone of tattoo, i still draw when I have time, and also study from books and you tube is also very useful. Practice and discipline is the big detour to the people think that tattoo is easy cake
@alyssamichaela7 жыл бұрын
Daniel VatoTattoo exactly! I've been wanting to be a tattoo artist for years and I've been drawing since I was a kid. Im seventeen right now and still have a couple of years before I leave home but I'm not quite to the point where I'd feel confident approaching a tattoo artist with a portfolio so I am constantly practicing all kinds of things and pushing the boundaries of what I am skilled in drawing.
@sterlingjoseph50687 жыл бұрын
Daniel VatoTattoo ummm actually tattooing is quite easy to pick up the (BASICS) if your already a good artist. It also helps if you have a light hand. It only took me about 2 days if that to get my line work damn near perfect . Now I can pull a straight line damn near 98% of the time after only two days of practicing it . Shading was easier for me to pick up . I ride the tube on everything except line work and the same way and confidence I have on paper I just carry it over to skin . I get lost in the moment most times and forget that I'm even working on skin and still think I'm coloring and drawing on paper . That's when my tattoos come out the best!!!🎨🎨🎨🎨😃😃😃😃😃
@James-ix5yj6 жыл бұрын
@SterlingJoseph: I'm 17, and I've been drawing on my arms with various greyscale tones of india ink brush pens, sometimes taking hours on a single arm sheath. In public, I've been treated as though I have tattoos (when I washed one off in a public restroom, a lady nearby was shocked when she saw the 'tattoo' flow down the drain) and family members and friends both online and locally have told me that I should be a tattoo artist. However, I'm still not old enough (in PA) and I'm not sure how well drawing with brush pens is like tattooing- I assume they're completely different, but would my experience with shading, inking and highlighting my arms and legs with pen make tattooing easier for me? Note: I am not doing it for money, I'm doing it because I enjoy doing so. I've even given curious friends in the past some arm drawings of their own.

started bringing my portfolio to artists last week, i've found that recently a lot of better artists are by appointment only and i have to email/dm them on instagram just to set up a time to chat. i know your video says not to contact them on the internet but it's almost impossible recently. i know your video is a few years old now but that is just a huge difference i've noticed
@AnrijsStraumeTattoo5 жыл бұрын
yeah. it was back then too , that most of the ''better'' online artists would be booking only. I do think most of those artists will not have time to individually take on apprentices, if they will be looking for someone they will post about it online.. (but I could be wrong) In this video I'm speaking about more realistic ways to get apprenticeships. There's hundreds of high street studios, with very low social media following, or without any social media, still with lot of good artists and in my opinion that would be more realistic to get apprenticeship there. as they will have receptionist / helper place / and ussualy there will be many artists, so Studio apprentice is something lots of street shops will want. Possibly they already have someone and not looking at the moment. but possibly their apprentice is already ready to start tattoo in few weeks and they are looking for new one to start. Good Luck with it! Let me know when you get one and how you got it ! will be great to hear !

Great information, awesome video. Thank you! I'm worried about the whole "work for free" apprentiship/internship model, as it can rip off young people who are desperate. I think that any ethical employer will pay their apprentices for their time (even if it's just a small amount equivalent to cost of a casual cleaner /janitor).
@AnrijsStraumeTattoo7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't agree on that. If you are worried about it don't do it, get another job. For skilled artist to teach their craft that's the least you could ask to work for them for free, anyone should be thankful for the opportunity and work hard. if you want to get pay you can go and work somewhere else. apprenticeships are not forced on you.
@MrHellokittybluffin4 жыл бұрын
No but they do take advantage some & this one a lot & like he said when it’s desperate some people don’t really have a choice bc they know they’re committed & want it doesn’t mean it’s fair to put them through ignorant unrelated tasks to take advantage not saying all but it does depend of course if it’s actually a respectful exchange & the apprenticeship is professional then of course that’s the least you could ask for is work for free for them but he does have a point

Great video as always... Amen on what you said. Another thing to consider what I have heard from many tattoo and body art artists on how to get in to tattooing, piercing or whatever is to be a good customer, to be friend of a shop and once they now that you are reliable, dedicated and have required attitude and hopefully skill set, you definitely have chance.

I was born an artist and have always been pretty good at drawing since I was a little boy. tattooing is definitely not easy though, I hope I can become a great tattoo artist one day. however its discouraging when I hear artists in the industry saying youll have to work for free in an apprenticeship in order to get in the tattoo industry. I have no time to work for free whatsoever. so the only other option for me is to become a great tattoo artist out of my kitchen.

I wouldnt be able to get a 2nd job (with the hours) or apply for benefits- do you have any advice on how to support myself or how to ask the artist for an apprenticeship wage?
@AnrijsStraumeTattoo7 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I can't really give you advice on that, you need to figure it out yourself. don't think there's many studios who will pay you to teach you. Best thing I can think of is - maybe try to find any job at all, and work for 1-2 years and save up all money so you can later live for a year with no work. + while you working hard and saving all the $$$ you can learn and practise drawing and art every single day. I'm sure it will work out !

The best liner will be the one what will be BEST for you. There's 1000's machines out there , Each one of them can be best machine to someone , and each can be worst machine for others. same goes with ink. whenever works for you will be good. I have lot of videos about machines where I explain what I use them for and what I prefer. and about ink too. check them out, hopefully that will give you more insight and help you to make a decision.

@@vsaturated I’m glad you stuck with your dream! I just turned 18 and decided I’m going to start tattooing. Did you already order your machine, if so what kind?

QUESTION: when applying for an apprenticeship, is it acceptable to include digital art in your portfolio? or is that looked down upon?
@AnrijsStraumeTattoo7 жыл бұрын
yes. I'm sure I mentioned that in this video, but I'm making another portfolio video, it will be up in next few days!

I've been wanting to be a tattoo artist for many years, and I just started working on my portfolio for an actual apprenticeship. when I was 18 years old, I got a machine as a birthday present. I haven't used it that much, since I want to be more educated before I jump out in big things. I have however, done few simple designs on friends and on myself. now, I can't decide if I should include these tattoos in my portfolio, and if I should even mention that I have experience with a machine and such. I heard someone say, that tattooers often prefer that you come in, leaving the previous experience outside the door so they have a chance of teaching you from scratch. I would like to hear your take on this, cus I have no idea what to believe

I personally wouldn't have a problem with it if someone already done few pieces on their friends , but I know most of the artist will. I would recommend not to mention or show any tattoos you tried before, when you are searching for apprenticeship. it can be a real big issue for most studios. After you already get it and you feel people are really cool , then you can tell them sometime. Good Luck !

When learning how to draw what do you think about using reference images? even as far as copying them with small tweaks, but never tracing?
@AnrijsStraumeTattoo7 жыл бұрын
yes , I think that's really important to use references . otherwise you can't know how to draw anything . I already filmed video about it. Just need to finish editing , and hopefully I will be able to post it sometime soon.

Thanks for your advice Anrijs, very helpful! Been waiting for this video for quite a long time... ;) If you know anything about HAND POKE tattoo technique, would be nice if you could share anything at all about it as I'm starting to introduce myself into the world of tattooing from there. Anyways, thanks again and keep it up! Peace!

hey. thank's for watching. I don't plan making any videos about that technique as I'm not familiar with it myself.
