Ansco Memo: Finding Success in the Nascent 'Miniature Format' Market - Camera Talk

The Ansco Memo hails from the later 1920s and is unique in its appearance from most 35mm cameras, although not for that era. The camera featured in this video is from 1929 or possibly later.

I think that this was the first commercially successful American-made 35mm camera. In the mid-1920s, 35mm film wasn't used widely by still photographers. It was primarily sold for making movies. There were earlier efforts to produce a still camera that used 35mm film, including some by Kodak. I have one of these Memo cameras. They came with a suede leather case. (I have one.) In terms of production, I think my camera is between both of yours. It's badged ANSCO; but has the shutter release protector. My experience using mine was that I free spooled film into the upper chamber, and used the provided take-up box to collect my film as it was advanced. Didn't know the screw on the side was for adjusting infinity focus. Mine sure has a soft focus on it's Wollensak Velostigmat lens.
