A lot of the price people neglect the time factor. You buy those wooden toys, and they'll last you throughout all your kids (I say that as the kid). If the fairphone lasts 5 years with a few replacement parts, it's already given me just as much time per dollar than that 3 year Samsung or 2 year iPhone did, and there's a good chance of getting 6-7 years in.

Yes!!! I still have wooden toys from my childhood and have passed them on. The plastic ones, not so much. And they're beautiful too. My FP is literally the best phone I ever had. I've turned it on and stopped worrying ever since.

That sound is the physical camera stabilisation. It's the camera rocking back and forth. It's suspended and meant to absorb small shock so the image stays stable. When you shake it to violantly it clacks against the casing.

Algorithm brought me here after researching the FP5 as well. A minor comment on the price, even for people who don't care about fair supply chain wages or don't trust the manufacturer, that's still very good value considering it has a long software support and the modules can be replaced easily without expensive work. I was actually sold on this front before I even read up about the factores and recycling stuff.
@UndineAlmani
@UndineAlmani Жыл бұрын
True. I must admit though, that in the FP3 the bottom module is buggy and currently sold out. So I am not sure if people should buy spare parts in advance, I am certainly thinking about it, but on the other hand, for 2 years, I had no problems and my husband just broke his lol... so maybe it's not the phone's fault. Anyway, the spare parts can be hard to come by or can come with waiting several weeks. Other than that, this phone has so much space, it basically never runs out. The only thing I don't like about the FP4 is the eSIM, I just dislike the trouble of having to go through people to get something (but I guess it's whining on a higher level).

@@UndineAlmani bit of a presonal tangent, I'm from Ukraine and at the beginning of the invasion I started using the phone heavily since I've been a free taxi. The charging port didn't like this constant use and broke while the official service for the brand was in occupied territory. This way the phone while completely fine otherwise became a brick, it's still lying around waiting for better times when I can fix it and I had to buy another which pains me greatly. If I had an option just to order the part and do it myself even if that meant waiting for a week, I'd not end up with a bit of e-waste :) And surely 2 cheaper phones are still more money than 1 expensive Fairphone.
@UndineAlmani
@UndineAlmani Жыл бұрын
@oleksiyprotas6376 Wow. I mean, FP has waiting times... RN my husband is waiting for the bottom module probably around 6 weeks. He McGyvered it so it works for now (which is a miracle in itself and probably wouldn't work with a lot of phones). I can't even imagine how the situation in your case must be, while cut off from a lot of trade and having to rely on something like repairability. Thanks for sharing, super interesting point!
@oleksiyprotas6376
@oleksiyprotas6376 Жыл бұрын
@@UndineAlmani heh, 6 weeks gonna hurt. I just assumed from the disassembly video that the charging plug should be easy enough to keep in stock. That being said, for a very heavy user like me who can at times absolutely depend on the phone's health, keeping some spares in advance is a good idea and absolutely outweighs the opportunity costs. We aren't so much cut off from trade, it's the case with my phone brand to be honest. But it highlights the issue that unless you have a Samsung/Google/Xiaomi, there's a big chance you won't be able to urgently repair it "on the field" in a non capital city, thus you end up with a backup phone. This already happened to me in a peaceful country too.
@UndineAlmani
@UndineAlmani Жыл бұрын
@oleksiyprotas6376 Ah okay . Yes, it sucks. But that's also the FP3, and I think that just the port was not so great and a lot of them broke down at once. At least they do produce them, it's just that they are in backlog now. Better this way than if they would over-produce these parts. I don't think that would be good either (like other companies do). But I think on the user's end this is a disadvantage. I will certainly not buy a bottom module just because I'm afraid it'll break. But I thought about getting a wireless adapter. It's permanently suck up the port, and then you can place your phone on an induction charger. However, the port then becomes useless (unless you remove the adapter, but that's not pracitcal). I don't know if the FP5 has the wireless charging option...

My husband has my 3yo FP3 now and it definitely still works like the first day (with the same battery too). He sadly broke the USB C port 🙄 and some claim it's flimsy, but I didn't think so... anyway, buying the "bottom module" in advance might be a good way to stay out of trouble 😆 I don't trust it entirely, but I'll admit I broke a USB port before, so....

The last phone I bought with my own money was a Nokia 8210. I eventually gave that one to my uncle. Every phone I've used since, was one of my brother's cast-offs. I tend to avoid doing security sensitive stuff on old phones that haven't had an update in a while. I use desktop machines for most of my computing needs. Though there's no getting away from the increasing need to have a secure device when out and about. The biggest draw for me in a phone like this is the ability to change the battery easily, and the relatively long software support. I don't really trust any company's claim of virtue. They often don't stand up to scrutiny. Though I haven't heard anything negative about this particular company. What does that gesture, where you pull down below your eye, signify? I've never seen that before.

I would consider it. I am probably holding out to see how the proposed eu legislation pans out. I am fortunate that ifix it sells oem parts for my phone it's already 3 years old. Wow I didn't realize how long I have had this phone. Replaced the battery one earlier this year and it's kind of crazy having an "old phone" that has really good battery life. I need to warranty my screen protector and the OLED is finally starting to degrade if you know what you are looking for. I do place some value on being able to relock the boot loader running 3rd party rom. Having HDMI out over usb c is probably going to be a requirement for me to consider upgrading in the next couple years. With all the foss apps I have installed it's like a pocket computer. I just want to be able to connect an external display for watching videos and find it infuriating that the USB spec supports it but device makers go out of their way to not support it.

Yes, a FairPhone video! Finally :D I've not seen any comments about the /e/OS, so I thought I would add a comment about my experience with it on my FP4. I purchased my PF4 from the /e/OS store directly so it came out the box with it installed and its a very basic set up process, much like most android phones. Banking for me works without issue. No authication app I've used or still use fail or complain, they work as intended. The Camera software is FOSS and so its got... Some issues, but I have notice it has gotten better and more stable over time with updates. However its still not fast, (not all that slow either) and doesn't do low light very well. Videos can look grainy in the didtially processed sort of way, but I believe this is because of the software not being as buffed up, like the googled version of the phone. The default home launcher is... Well... Not my cup of tea, so I installed something else, Olauncher, which is very minimalistic and love it very so much. The app store is a mash together of F-droid and the google app store. How's that possible? /e/OS uses a service called microG, so this is how banking apps and google apps work without problems. Its a containerized, stripped down version of the normal google playsotre service and other services, with some spoofing of data, I believe, so its a lot more private. Some of the default apps are alright but I've opted to remove as many as I can and just others I prefer. Battery life is good, I think the SoC is a bit power hungry and because it supports 5G, this all adds to a good to sometimes not good battery life if being used heavily, with or without wifi, but again something I've notitced improve with updates. As for updates, at least once a month, and they happen when you want, and you dont get notified right away either. Every time you reboot the phone it checks to see if there is an update, and let's you know if there is one. App updates can be controlled in the app store for when to check and update, but also check and updates every time the phone is rebooted, if there are app updates available. Its not actually that annoying its just something to note however. Last winter I had to deal with an external water pipe burst and I used my PH4's flashlight to help me see in the darkness of the winter night, in my PJs, getting soaking wet at 1am. My PF4 go very wet, it was dropped on Ice, a lot, and I've never worried about the lack of water resitance since. It does have some battle scars on the aluminum frame from the drops however. I have the green back, I wanted so badly the speckled green back but /e/ were not selling that color way, big sad. D: But I really love the wear on the plastic, its like how leather ages, but its of course not leather. My only gripe, is the tear drop bezzle for the front facing camera. I never use the front facing camera and I dont like the look of it getting in the way of the screen but its just such a little thing I'm sort of over it now. I really have come to love my PF4 and the fact I have a 5 year warranty and possible endless software updates is just fabulous and you can't denie that. 😁 Great video by the way, and thanks for reading all this, if anyone made it this far. -THS.

Yes to the fairphone, but I didn't like that from the transition from 3 to 4 they got rid of the audio jack at the same time that they started selling their own wireless earbuds; obviously a profit driven sort of business tactic. Unfortunately I have most of my 'phone money' tied up in the phone itself through my service provider, so if I wanted another phone right now I'd need to cancel to sell my current phone. Not very feasible right now. But in the future, definitely.

Yeah, it definitely has a bad taste to it. But for me it was okay, because I have been using earbuds (semi fair from House of Marley) for several years now. You can also look into the Shift phone, it's cheaper and I think it has a mic jack. I never had a phone contract, because always free and prepaid, but I can totally understand. It also makes sense environmentally to use what you got before something new. My old phone was no longer usable and dead slow, it also could not be rooted safely, which is why I in the end got the FP3, which is now my husband's. The FP4 was a update because if NFC and 5G which I really wanted, together with some other features...

@@UndineAlmani I chose my current phone solely based on the type of display (not curved screen) and battery life. My previous phone was an admittedly too expensive samsung but I liked it a lot, and at the end of me owning it I'd replaced the screen twice and the battery life was essentially useless; from battery lasting day and a half to having to charge it half-way through the day. So hopefully my current phone will outlast the samsung, and I was hedging a bet with buying newer that I'd be 'future proofing' my decision with longer battery life later on. But if I ever become dissatisfied with those phone to any extent I think I might switch. I want something that's repairable, 4g, and has a microphone jack lol. I'll likely also go for the fp3 in the future, I didn't like that the 4 was 5g (I'm pretty sure it is, anyways).

I decided to get the fairphone 5 after my Blackberry Key2 le broke and couldn't be repaired. I saw a lot of people talking about "ah, the specs are so bad" all the time so I was a bit uncertain. But now I have it, I have no idea what people are talking about. It works fine, the UI is a little funky but that's on android 13 and not the hardware. My only issues with it stem from me liking the BlackBerry Key series so much and me missing features that my previous phone had. The BlackBerry Key phones were so under rated and I'm sad that they stopped making them. But I'm glad I had the excuse to finally give fairphone a shot. Same! I think it's just fine. It's not "the fanciest of fancy" but the point isn't to get THE best phone on the market in terms of specs, to me the objective always was "what working phone can I get with a decent camera that is also not made by somebody else's kid?". That's it. I think the key phones were really cute. It must have been easier to type! I have a keyboard for my phone now, so ridiculous, but I just hate typing on that small screen, because for the love of God, I can't do it blind. And I absolutely can do that on a real keyboard.

It's way worse in phones even because we barely have alternatives (unlike e.g. in fashion or choice of a low-fuel-intensive car etc.). And most people who can spend 500 bucks or more on a phone, don't spend it on a good one for "performance". I just couldn't do that. And it was still a big step up from my old one. I also compared the camera with a 2yo Apple device and in mediocre lighting it was not superior, so I was like "OK that hype is weird..."

People just aren't confronted with that reality at the time of purchase and so don't spend in regards to the way that product came about. It's still horribly wrong, but people either don't know or can't get other options (some service providers don't allow for certain phones unless they approve of it, as far as phones are concerned). as for the people who buy uncaringly while knowing the true cost, well, they'll burn for their allowance of modern day slavery.

Recently replaced the charging port and battery which improved charging and battery life a lot. My only noteworthy complaint is that it will randomly stop charging. Currently considering buying FP4 (FP5 is quite expensive for me) so I have a question: "Do the older models like FP3 (and FP4 which is on its way to be the "older one") keep up up with the software?" I mean, regular phones like mid-range Samsungs and Pixels and variety of Chinese shit turn into really glitchy after 1.5-2 years of usage even in the menu, let alone the apps. So does it happen to be the case with the FPs?

Fairphone tries to pay their workers fair wages at as many stages as possible while also focusing on suppliers who don’t use child labor, slave labor, nor underpaid labor. Cobalt and lithium mining aren’t exactly very fair industries, I personally don’t like the idea of children being responsible for making my phone at any stage. A big chunk of the price also comes from the fact that it’s a modular phone. It’s almost always cheaper to build a non-modular phone at the cost of the consumer’s ability to repair.
@joyruppert4710
@joyruppert4710 Жыл бұрын
You can think of the cost in another way as well. A 250€ phone lasting 3 years would cost 83.3€/year. Buying this 700€ phone but it lasts for 8y would cost 87€/year. So in the end they cost the same but you contributed to less suffering, child labour, e-waste and other unfair working conditions. Not bad!

Also a good point. I'd even be okay with paying 160€ a year and the phone lasting as long as all my other cheap ones, but less suffering overall. Just gotta say that ADHD is not something induced by one's internet/phone habits (though it can be the cause of various kinds of bad phone/internet habits). While there ARE a variety of ways the internet can harm attention span that's not ADHD so much as it is bad habits (And yes, those do take time and energy to fight against). ADHD is an inborn difficulty with with executive dysfunction, aka. being able to self-regulate, initiate (or cease) various tasks and so on. Not "Need to do 23083 things at once" (though that can be one manifestation) so much as "Cannot choose what to focus on". One way this can manifest is actually focusing too much on something (hyperfocus) to the exclusion of everything else. Or only being able to focus on monotenous ("boring") tasks with podcasts or such running in the background, being able to focus much better when also being able to sketch/do sudoku etc on the side... Lovely that in 2023 this kind of misinformation still persists. Though you're 100% right about skewed priorities, missing the point, judging based on something they essentially made up wholesale and such. Same with whining about processors, are they trying to run Baldur's gate 3 on their phone or what? Also, the ability/ease of flashing custom ROMs is vastly underplayed/undervalued. Easy to unlock bootloader, a fair amount of custom ROMs (as opposed to needing to use GSIs)... I remember trying to unlock an old Huawei and it was borderline impossible, had about 20 different pitfalls with the closest one could get to a guide being reading through 100 pages of old forum posts and deducing from what people did wrong.

@@UndineAlmani What makes you think that there are "plenty of idiots lying about it online"? Why should people believe you specifically but not others? Not saying nobody lies (it's the internet, everybody lies), but generally deciding that everyone else (/most people) must definitely be lying isn't helping anyone. I think I already somewhat mentioned that in regards to "bad habits" but yes that was a bit simplified (Neuroplasticity, what you do any think affects how your brain is structures; one reason that a lot of people with ADHD find that even if they choose to no longer take medication they're having an easier time if they have taken it before - the brain gets more training in using executive functions)? Though I would like some more reading into it since I'm mainly coming at it from the standpoint of generally knowing that your brain can change over time rather than actual studies specific to it.

A fair amount of apps, especially banking related ones, really don't like rooted phones, but depending on the method (and phone, and your luck...) there are various methods to hide it (still researching the specifics myself but I know they exist).
