after i let myself break free from sticking to an aesthetic that’s really when i saw my style develop! i’ve noticed that i have multiple “aesthetics” in my style and they actually vary depending on the season. my style in the summer is soft and feminine with lots of whites and reds, while during the fall and winter i love chunky knits and mustard and terracotta colors. i get more compliments on my style now then i ever have before and it’s really just because i wear what i want and LIKE it!

I have multiple aesthetics as well, but it's more complicated for me because it entirely depends on how I'm feeling. I also listen to a lot of different types of music and I love different artists' sense of fashion, so I shift from extremely feminine to very punk/rock girl chic to extremely boyish. I'm also Indian, so I mix my ethnic clothes with more western pieces too. I'm still experimenting and I don't really have a lot of "outfits" to put together, so it's still in the works. I'm so glad you figured it out for yourself, it can be irritating sometimes.

I love that the "hourglass shape" is supposedly the ideal figure to have but as someone who actually is that shape there are NO CLOTHES that actually fit all my proportions. I'm not arguing that fashion magazines still treat it as the goal but it's a proper pain to own and dress properly without getting every item tailored. It's also actually very limiting because any slightly interesting shape on a garment will instantly make me look completely out of proportion.

hey mina! not expecting you to have all the answers to all the fashion-related problems out there (a discussion to bring more attention to the issue would help) but especially after your video about tiktok i was wondering if you would consider covering the topic of how difficult it kinda feels to transfer into the world of sustainable fashion. i already know cost is a widely known struggle when it comes to these pieces but i've noticed when looking at sustainable clothing it's a jarring change from typical mainstream fast-fashion or even higher-end clothing. the clothes that i stumbled upon seemed to be generally of a similar natural color palette, of very basic and not so form-fitting silhouettes, and essentially felt surprisingly restricting creatively compared to the rows and rows of style options and aesthetics we have gotten accustomed to with fast fashion. i don't know how sustainable the clothing industry was pre-internet popularity of fast fashion websites but it makes me wonder, where did regular everyday people of the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s get their good quality/long lasting clothes that have become the vintage pieces we love today? so many people say stuff like "oh i got (insert piece of clothing) from my mom or dad from the 80s" and it makes me wonder where we can keep getting such reliable but stylish pieces today. obviously we see how cool statement designer pieces can be in shows back then like the nanny on fran fine for example, but i'm wondering how (aside from cost, since that seems to be a standard we can't really work around) everyday people who just want to slowly start incorporating long-lasting and good quality yet interesting and stylish clothing can find new clothes, since people back then seemed to have been able to? of course i know thrifting is one option, but compared to buying new clothes (which i guess can be considered... "problematic" in a sense) it's a lot more difficult to find clothes that you know will fit you for sure especially if you do not know how to tailor clothes. for those inexperienced with sewing, i feel like thrifting is great for certain pieces, but not all. god i know this comment was atrociously long but i think it would be a super interesting and helpful video topic!
@rosieevans8960
@rosieevans8960 2 жыл бұрын
I'm a sustainable fashion designer and I cant answer all the Q's but I know that a lot of the 'good quality vintage clothing' that still lasts today was due to the fabrics and components, clothing was designed to last a lot more seasons, so you would find more 100% cotton and 100% wool than polyester or mixed blend fabrics, these fabrics are a lot more durable and people treated them with a bit more care, like following the care label of the garments. Now it's a lot cheaper to buy mix blend fabrics, and big brands aren't designing clothes to last more than a few seasons as they want you to buy more pieces. As for finding fun sustainable pieces that don't all look the same, I'd deff try looking through social media like instagram over shopping sites, as a lot of small independent brands sell through their social media accounts. And looking at sustainable stockists and boutiques, that house lots of new and unique brands. The community of sustainable designers is really great and once you start following a few you'll be exposed to more cool brands and designers. Also going to plug my own brand Rosie Evans Online, I make fun historically inspired clothes out of vintage textiles, like corsets, dresses and mini skirts. Hope it helped a little xx

was just gonna say!! i've always admired gamine style but could never make it work on my soft natural body. now i despair less and have a much smaller wardrobe lol. i want to also add that the idea of a "flattering" outfit is potentially toxic, especially so in the hands of the hourglass system (where every shape is trying to look hourglas?? wot). i think the idea of comfort, both physically and psychologically, is a more important one to be aware of. it has much less to do with adhering to a patriarchal beauty standard and more to do with how a person feels!

I am so with you on having range and variety! If someone asks what my style is, the best I could give would be “Historybounding”. Everything that I personally like from the 1300s to about WWI. Generally more working class, because I find that’s much easier to fit into a modern wardrobe. Also, no big skirt supports. Partly because it would look strange to wear a full on robe a la francaise with massive panniers on the modern street, but mostly because I’m a wheelchair user, so I need something that’s gonna fit. But those two guidelines- working class and will it fit in my wheelchair, have been the best guidelines for determining if an era or a look is too much to wear. I do also have costumes (see profile pic), but for that, I just added a hat, a shawl, and mitts. I’ve worn that exact outfit as just the shift, stays and petticoat on its own and it’s fine. That’s another thing I do try to do- make an outfit that I can wear as part of my daily wardrobe, but that with a few accessories, can be elevated to full on historical costume. That way I’m not spending time and money creating a costume for events, and then also clothing for my wardrobe (and I do sew all of my own clothing, because it’s not like Target is selling 18th century petticoats and jackets, ya know?) But I have a lot of variety in my wardrobe, and once I’m done making a few outfits from one era, I move on to another era. I’m currently still in the 18th century, making a few mix and match outfits. And then, I can also mix and match from different eras. I do that by keeping a fairly consistent colour story through all the eras I sew- so neutrals like white, grey, beige and browns, with pops of blue and teal. That way, I can wear an Edwardian blouse with an 18th century petticoat if I want to. Or an 18th century jacket over a 14th century kirtle. Hell, a sleeveless Tudor kirtle goes really well over a poofy sleeved late Victorian blouse! Like a pinafore! So my style is “historical”, and spans about 700 years. Because why stick to one style or one era? That would be boring! And particularly because I do sew all my own clothing, I want to be able to grow in my skills, and try new things. I’m looking forward to cartridge pleating my 1860s work dress, and I learned a lot about different styles of pleating during this 18th century adventure. And sleeve construction, and setting sleeves in a different way. I’ve learned a lot about stays and corsets to the point that you m Joe comfortable making my own patterns that are different (like a modified regency shirt stays for my daughter, who wants something really supportive for her large bust, or a frankenmashup of stays and a late Victorian corset to give me the shape of the 1780s, but much easier and quicker to put on, with more lower back support). It’s been a really fun and educational journey, and I get this awesome wardrobe out of it too. Highly recommend.

Going along the question of mixing styles/aesthetics; I’m a big fan of scene fashion and fairycore! Yes my closet has both! My favorite colors are lime green and pink so my closet is mostly lime and pink and the only thing that separates my scene and fairy outfits is that my scene is a very black base and I show off my raccoon tails and with the fairy outfits I use a brown base. Color pallets are important when building a wardrobe :)

I wear vintage reproductions because I don't have an "antiques lifestyle" (bunny lover w two boisterous young sons). Also I'm a bit heavy, and while bigger vintage pieces exist, people in the past appear not to have had waists as thick as mine! It can be hard to find repro pieces that are not too costume-y, and it can also be hard not to just get cheaply-made fast fashiony stuff, but there are some decent reproductions out there. I started *really* dressing up after the pandemic started to cheer myself up, but for the foreseeable future I don't think I'll go back even as things reopen. I discovered your channel during pandemic too, I love it! Thanks for doing what you do! ETA: thanks for the tip about hot rollers, I have fine dense hair that hates to take a curl, so I wear my hair up every day, but I'm going to try them because I'd love to wear it down sometimes. Gonna go try that now...

It’s not actually true that people had smaller waits back then! It’s just thats the vintage clothing thats lasts to today is stuff that wasn’t bought or wasn't really worn, so thats why small sizes last to today. A lot more people are larger sizes, so thats what is bought and used and therefor doesnt last. I hope that made sense, other people have explained it better to me lol
@katefriend4085
@katefriend4085 2 жыл бұрын
@@imjustdandy9799 completely makes sense and I basically agree. It is harder to find authentic vintage in my size, and I feel like for a lot of reasons, the bigger you are the harder vintage can be to find, BUT it can still be done. Another thing I've taken to doing, in part to improve my posture, is to wear a corset (_under_ my clothes!) It also helps get the mid-20th century sillouette I try to go for! Not necessary, but it works for me!
@arletteschu
@arletteschu 2 жыл бұрын
@@imjustdandy9799 but people were also smaller, food was mostly home cooked or at least not as processed as today, there wasn't a drive through on every corner + in europe the aftermath of ww2 still had an impact on people in the 50s. Also the average woman weighed 140lb in 1960, in 2014 she weighed 168.5lb, so sizing must have gotten bigger. Of course this doesn't mean that there aren't bigger vintage pieces, but if demand wasn't there in the 1950s there can't be the same quantity of pieces as the smaller sizes today.

And I'd love a deep dive into goth fashions, especially current goth (which people don't really explore beyond what trad goth looks like today - which is kinda unchanged honestly, or modern goth except that almost all the easily found content is stuck in the mid 2010s)
