I am an Ob/Gyn and would encourage anyone not to go into any specialty for the money. Also, do not compare your salary, specialty, or job to others. You decide what kind of career you want and shouldn't compare to others. My family is more important to me than my salary or even my job/career. Also, as your life changes your priorities will change. Before I got married and had a baby, I had different priorities. Now my family is the most important. I do not want to live back on my life with regrets or what if because I was chasing money or my career.

I agree too! It’s important to go choose a specialty based on your priorities and desires out of life. I am considering family medicine.

@Fry 9 You are mistaken. Up until a year ago, I was the only breadwinner in my family. And my husband only makes 1/3 of what I make. That doesn't even matter because we handle our finances together.
@drjennale4 жыл бұрын
I also disagree with you because I continue to be the main source of income in our family. As Joy said - we look at finances as a family so it doesn’t make a difference. Just because the majority of people you know have men as the main breadwinner - does not make that a reality. Unless you studied econ and analyzed population vs community data then you just pulled that number of 90% out of thin air.

Having just matched into Emergency Medicine residency just last month..I will say there is NO EASY SPECIALTY...being a doctor in any capacity is a privilege that takes tremendous sacrifice and perseverance..if you make it into a specialty you love..you have won! Lastly...being a licensed/board certified physician ...you can literally make as much money as your heart desires independent of specialty...work 2 jobs, work locum, consulting, adjunct professor, etc...its just about what youre willing to sacrifice...so in essence dont let anyone or anything chose the life you want..you only get one.

I’ve commented before, but i wanted to again because I LOVE our family care practitioner. She takes care of my 18 month old, myself, and will also care for my newborn when he makes his arrival in July. I have hypothyroidism and she manages that better than my endocrinologist did because she looks at the whole picture of my health. She has taken such good care of my son in his first year and a half of life and never made me feel like i was being a crazy first time mom. It was also super helpful during my son’s first few months of life to see her so often for my son’s check ups, but she also checked in with me to see how I was doing not only physically but mentally! I 100 percent would tell anyone who is hesitant to go check out a family care provider!! Family care providers are angels on earth and I so appreciate what you guys do!

Honestly I shadowed a derm and they dealt with acne and eczema all day. Every specialty will have cases that they routinely do. Does that make that specialty inherently boring? No. Do the specialty that makes you feel happy because at the end of the day it isn't hard to find negatives in everything.

I was assigned by by insurance provider to a doctor who’s a DO. In an effort to better understand her background, I recently went and educated myself on the distinction between a DO and an MD. Although, there have been some hiccups in our doctor-patient relationship, I haven’t given up on her yet. For instance, she played a part in me having abstained from alcohol for the past two years. So that’s a pretty significant win. A previous doctor made a subtle suggestion that consuming alcohol was working to aggravate certain conditions, but I didn’t latch onto it. And until this video, I didn’t know that OMT was an actual practice unto itself. As a man, it’s oftentimes awkward having a female GP, but there are pluses too. Sometimes it really tests me as a man to stay on board. It requires quite a bit of introspection to process some of the feelings that we’ll up. Keep going though. Some of us male patients might be difficult in the beginning. But over time, you can potentially win some of us over.

My boyfriend had a 248 and chose family medicine and got sooooo much crap for it. His own school told him that he was “wasting his talents” and everyone telling him how anybody who dreams of going into a competitive, high paying speciality would kill for that score. And tbh I’m a bit guilty of having that misperception subconsciously too. However, starting medical school myself, I truly see why he loves it so much, it is literally the best specialty imo, and I wish people didn’t have such negative preconceptions of it before their rotations. I’ve seen several people at my school, even those who want to pursue highly competitive specialities, absolutely love their FM rotations more than anything, but care too much about what other people think, and it kinda breaks my heart. Like you said, there are those that are amazing at the clinical side of things, kill it in the classroom, love FM, but have always been bad at standardized tests, so there’s always two sides of the spectrum. I definitely appreciate you discussing this ❤️

I find the referrals assumption funny because in my 22 years my primary care doctor never referred me out unless it was for eye care so I needed to see a Optometrist. Could you speak more on the role of family medicine inpatient vs outpatient? I didn't know that family medicine patients can work inpatient (eg. Are they hospitalists?). Thanks!
@drjennale5 жыл бұрын
I’m doing a video on that next week! You can work as a Hospitalist as an FM doctor. It will be harder for you to find a job just because you’re competing against internal medicine. A lot of my internal medicine colleagues are having a hard time themselves finding Hospitalist jobs. It would be easier in more rural areas. Harder in urban cities.
@jenjencurls5 жыл бұрын
How much time you have left in residency? Also, I agree with you that family medicine doctors still make a lot of money. Even if the pay is in the 100s for some, that is still enough money to live comfortably! It is still more money than what most of the population makes. I don’t get why people think that they “need” to make over $300,000 a year. As someone who has lived in poverty pretty much all her life, I can tell you that I can live more than comfortably with anything over $100,000, specially if my income is not the only one in the house.

I wish I could find another great Family Doctor. Our Family Doctor that moved knew our family. She was invested in us as patients. I think it’s mostly people not in medicine and those “aspiring” to medicine that contribute to the negative assumptions. No physicians speak poorly of family docs, because fam docs LITERALLY do everything and know a bit from every specialty. Family docs make the world of medicine go round. They are the gateway to patients getting all other specialized care.

Usually, each patient is given a 20 minute time slot in outpatient family medicine. That’s why you’re always informed to come 10 minutes early to check in. But if my patient ever needed me to spend extra time with them, I do not hesitate to do that. There is always a line in the ED. People can come in critically ill and need attention. ED doctors also try to get relative healthy people home quickly due to so much exposure to germs in the ED. So many people has the flu right now showing up to the ED. Would have for you to get sick with a virus when you came in for something else.

Do you feel like specialist in Israel are over worked or have high burn out rates? I personally feel like if a surgeon had to do all the simple things like suture a wound, it would take away time from doing the bigger surgeries and traumas. Same with other specialties.

@@drjennale thank you so much for answering 😀. And YES, there are high levels of burnout in the medical industry here, the residents, no matter the specialty, work so much and when they are on call it's a 26 hour shift and no sleep.. I feel like things need to change so patients can receive the best care. Also, here it's like if a child has a cut on the Eyebrow the pediatrician calls the ophthalmologist, yet if it's like 2 cm above it's considered a surgeon's job.. I may be exaggerating a bit but that's a big picture of things. Here it is Very clear who does what and because fear of getting sewed etc people don't step out of their area. I guess it's just different everywhere 😑

I feel that the same concept is very common in the east coast of the US as well. It’s definitely a system wide issue. Also probably the cause of increase physician burn out/suicide.

Thanks for the informative video! Do you have formal OMT didactics incorporated in your residency training, mentors who are proficient in it and can guide you to improve your manipulation, or is it the resident's volition that determines the amount of OMT performed on patients? I'm looking at different FM residencies and would prefer one that has strong OMT instruction but wondering if my manipulation skills will wane if I don't have faculty that do it regularly.

We have 3 preceptors who did a NMM fellowships. I definitely feel like they have helped me develop and build upon my knowledge base. We also have incoming MD residents next year where we have develop a didactic curriculum. I do know DO physicians who went through MD residencies and still practice OMT in their practice. There are plenty of opportunities for further education such as conferences and courses. You just have put in the effort.

@@drjennale This is helpful since I'm kind of at a crossroads about which residency to choose!

If the board scores for family medicine residency we’re high like neurosurgery or plastics we probably wouldn’t have a lot of family medicine doctors today. We need primary care providers and if we had a higher board score requirement a lot people probably would get into to family medicine because of it being a hypothetically competitive speciality. It’s not a bad thing that they accept lower board scores because everyone doesnt perform well on standardized test any way. Performing well on these test doesn’t make you less smart then the next doctor. It’s so much more involved in being a physician then one or two test. I am only a premed and I realize that now.

Do all children see paediatricians? Or is it only if they're referred by a family med doc?
@drjennale5 жыл бұрын
I think it’s a cultural perspective that has recently changed. Patients started to believe that all children needed to go to a pediatrician which is not the case. Same with OB, not all pregnant women need to see OB. Some see FM doctors, others see midwives. It’s hard to change perspective that’s what what I hope we can do by educating people about family medicine and all it has to offer.
@katet76245 жыл бұрын
@@drjennale that's super interesting! as people see their FM docs for more cases, what do general paediatricians end up seeing? just more specialized childhood issues?
@drjennale5 жыл бұрын
There are many sub specialized pediatrics! Like GI, neurology, liver and intestinal failure. Many many different fellowships after pediatric residency. But I was compare to to internal medicine how IM only sees adults, pediatrics only sees kids, and family medicine sees everyone. There’s a shortage of physicians so either ends of the spectrum are never worried they don’t have patients

Hi Jenny! I'm interested in becoming a DO and specialize in FM. I think is a great field but people scared me telling me to go into another route like PA or a more lucrative specialty. What do you think about the burn out in the field? I would like to have work life balance for my family and have time to travel the world. Do you think this is possible as a FM doctor? Thank you for making this video. You are very inspiring!

I too want work life balance and find time to travel. As I said, you determine your schedule once you become a physician.

How does the role of the Family Medicine PA differ from the role of the Physician?
@tomare64795 жыл бұрын
Physician is trained for more years and can do more stuff depending on training. Also many people request being seen by doctors because of their training which is very broad.
@MHSMagicLuver5 жыл бұрын
I’m planning on starting in family medicine when I graduate PA school in August 2020. The role completely depends on the supervising physician. As a new grad I will definitely want a supervising physician who is there to help the PA learn, but as you become a PA who has worked for a long time, you can be very independent (once again depending on the SP). I think it’s great to start in family medicine to help learn a variety of things and also for when you have to take your PANRE since it’s over everything. I don’t start clinicals until August though so I Havnt seen this in person. Super excited and nervous at the same time :) My comment is not specific to family medicine but rather any specialties. :) it all depends on the supervising physician so when finding a job, interview them just as they are interviewing you. Yes some people request doctors but then again some people will specifically request the PA :) it just depends on the persons experience on the specific provider (I used to work as a MA in a ped office and saw pts asking for either one specifically)

No, a family medicine doctor cares for all ages. I think the specialty you are interested would be a primary care pediatrics residency
