The comment on how long running Shonen romance manga are is so true oh my god. When I tried to read Komi I was into it for the first like 100 chapters or so, but when you start to realize its just never going to end or approach any kind of major headway because as long as its popular its going to continue on, the manga just loses any sort of impact. Finish your series! Please!

And it's so frustrating when so many shoujo romance that should have even just been 12 or 13 volumes rather than 10 get rushed to finish 😭 I know the two aren't correlated but too many of my fav shoujo romances just get a quick ending...

This is what I feel like going through now with dress up darling☹️ and that’s not even pure romance genre i guess.

@@ColleensMangaRecs What's even sadder is those endless shounen romances that go into repeat mode ironically also tend to have horrible abrupt, rushed endings. I think it is a symptom of broader problems with the industry more so than a single genre. Mangakas are encouraged to keep their stories going no matter what so long as they are profitable then once they start to slip they are given the axe out of the blue with the authors finding out like 3/4 of the way through their current and soon-to-be-last volume. Que the weird rushed time skip and abrupt ending.

I read a lot of the popular shonen romances and while I do like most of them (screw Rent-A-Girlfriend tho) your point about them being way too long is true... even if most of them have been making massive moves recently with the main characters *actually* getting together, I feel like a lot of them move a step forward and then we have to stay on that step for like 20 more chapters to make room for shenanigans.
@ColleensMangaRecs2 жыл бұрын
I would levy the same complaints about shoujo romance that go on too long also. A series like Namaikizakari never needed to be 21 volumes with how much it just goes back and forth for no reason. On the flipside if it's a romance series like Kimi ni Todoke which doubles as a coming of age series that explores character dynamics and growing up more than it makes a lot more sense. It really all just depends on how things are handled. I also just feel like shonen always gets to last wayyyy longer than shoujo do when a lot of times they don't need to be lasting that long lol.

I found it interesting that out of 4 of the shoujo beat titles you mentioned that make Shoujobeat the best shoujo publisher, all 4 of them have anime adaptions. It really just goes to show how much an adaption helps to spread a series to a much wider audience. It also shows how little shoujo adaptions we've been getting -___- or that they've been major hits when they get one. (Besides Fruit's Basket cuz thats an exception, since its a remake) Even with the 3(?) we're getting this season, with all the shounen this season I doubt anyone is going to know about them... also! I noticed how all 3 of them are novel adaptions... I really hope thats not the future of shoujo adaptions. The more I type the more depressed I feel, so I'll just leave it at that lol. Thanks for the q/a! I really enjoyed it! And thanks for reinvigorating my love towards shoujosei, I fell off it for a while. But your channel has helped me rediscover it!

I will say that 7 seas really is making moves. Aside from picking more shoujo they are willing to hit genres that others haven't, like danmei (chinese bl). I can definitely see Shuri becoming a favorite of your usual anime bros too (even though they probably don't deserve him). The fact that we got a Banana Fish anime for Akimi Yoshida's 40th anniversary make me so hopeful about an adaptation for Yumi Tamura own anniversary next year, even though the obvious choice here would be to adapt Mystery to Iunakare.

More Q & A videos, please! You mentioned not being able to think of topics for videos... I'd love to hear your thoughts on: - Age gaps in shojosei. It seems so "normal" in series, and I don't know if I'm in the minority being kinda squicked out? But as soon as I see the heroine is in high school and the hero is an adult, I just can't continue 😭 - The "villainess" niche explosion and how it's evolving? Isekai in shojosei has been around for a long time, but villainess manga and light novels have just exploded recently, but they're taking some distinguishing routes? Like My Next Life As a Villainess is super different from I'm the Villainess and I'm Taming the Final Boss etc. - A Roundup of digital shojosei manga platforms? There's the typical retailer online bookstores, but there have been some subscription platforms etc that have titles I didn't even know were licensed! I'm wondering which ones are out there and which have shojosei titles worth checking out... I have a lot more I'd love to hear your thoughts on (obv I'm a big fan!!) ❤

It’s part of the reason I have stopped reading manga for so long as I was heart broken by that. Love just having a casual Q & A, especially if it's needed for your sake! Manga/anime burnout is pretty cyclical for me, and sometimes I just need a break. I really needed a break from the week-to-week keeping up with seasonal anime, and didn't watch any new shows this summer. Literally all I watched were a couple theatrical releases (like Inu-oh) and occasionally uhh some of the new One Piece dubbed episodes that have been releasing around once a month. It was the best decision. And look, so many of us had those childhood comics/manga we made and aren't ready for them to see the light of day. I made a Kirby manga when I was in 4th grade and I'm sure I thought it was Fantastic haha ETA - Would LOVE to see a video on intimacy in shojo romance! While there are romances in seinen/shonen that I really enjoy, it's rare to find those that nail that specific aspect, whether it's due to genre/pacing conventions for that series, the art style not lending itself to those moments well, etc... Half the time, the anime adaptations end up leaving a noticeably stronger impact due to the vulnerability/emotions found in the voice acting or music. Even some shojo romance manga that I didn't end up loving, I can almost always usually remember a specific panel or moment that really captured that feeling and has still stuck with me.

I understand the frustration regarding whether you'll cover Shonen, but I think as part of your male audience, I'd love to see your unique perspective on the genre. They have free shipping (and free priority shipping if you pay over a certain amount), heaps of stuff and they even give little free gifts like cover slips, bookmarks and letters. The letters are super cute, they hand-write your name on them and gosh it's just so welcoming and sweet TT plus the manga volumes and magazines are always in the best condition. Definitely recommended even just for the customer service! And as always this is a really nice video. Completely agree on the male characters in shoujo, most of my favourite male characters I have noticed tend to be from shoujo (what am I supposed to do when the entire Akatsuki no Yona cast exists?!). And your advice on the backlash is really good. I think it's really important and meaningful what you've said despite gosh the amount of hate and criticism you would get from it :"l And oh my goshh Gakuen Alice, it pains me to see that it never got the finished licensing. Pretty sure it was the first manga I ever read (and first shoujo manga!) and I still love it so much TT I managed to get volume 3 a while back somehow which I'm still ecstatic about but gahh it being licensed again (along with an anime reboot-?) would be so great.

Can't remember if you've mentioned it before, but I'm really enjoying how the insecurities that the main character struggles with directly impacts her choices, wanting to be a good person but at the same time navigating friendships with some not so nice people that take advantage of her pushover personality and how that causes her to respond to others that are unkind to her. I feel like it's not often we get to see hesitation about doing the right thing, since a strong moral compass is a trait a lot of people are drawn to. Thanks so much for the Q&A! Lately we've been lucky with reprintings of old shoujo series. Maybe another publisher takes up the series some day. It really deserves better.

This video was fun to watch! Seeing you enjoy yourself answering questions is so nice and it's good that you're taking care of yourself with breaks like this. It's good to hear you have moderators to help with the backlash! It's such a shame that people have to be so unnecessarily nasty about things. You're just being informative and they're proving your point by lashing out. Everyone deserves a safe space to enjoy anime/manga, but they're so hard to come by =( Ahaha, thank you for giving us a look at your old shoujo Manga idea! I also find your new idea interesting. Sort of like Natsume's Book of Friends except without yokai and following a female protagonist? I used to be a really out going kid, but was broken down by bad friendships and being told I "had to behave a certain way" because "biology". So I think having series that show characters dealing with their insecurities are really important. It would be especially nice to follow a non-binary lead dealing with their insecurities through high school/college while they find themselves and (maybe?) even romance. I really wish I had found Fruits Basket and Natsume's Book of Friends as a teen because they would have been helpful for me back then. I feel like the US has an abundance of places where you can find Manga. I mean-- rightstuff would be great if their shipping costs weren't high enough to block out any savings one would get outside of the US. I think-- even though Shoujo Beat has an abundance of shoujo series they also have an absolutely HORRIBLE time keeping anything in print. There are series that have been completely out of stock for more than a year so it makes catching up in series or starting new ones difficult at times. The more I learn about some of the shojousei series out there from upcoming anime and from you, I get increasingly frustrated by the fact that so many of these interesting series are digital-only. I understand that it's convenient for the publisher, but they're cutting out a large number of fans that would love to buy the series either because they can't stand reading on a screen or because they simply prefer to buy physically. I cross my fingers every week that Seven Seas might pick up the rights to print some of the series, but they're one company so of course they can't do it all. Kind of makes me wish that if the companies themselves don't want to do it, there could be another off-branch company that would take preorders for all of the digital-only stuff as a sort of print-on-demand where you still just have to pay a normal Manga price to buy the volumes. But that's certainly too much to ask for, ahaha... (I'll try not to complain about digital-only series when I comment on your videos in the future ='D I'm sorry) I look forward to your future content! Be sure to take good care of yourself and take your time getting the content ready to post =)

For a great shonen coming of age romantic comedy, I'd say you should give Kimagure Orange Road a chance. Madoka Ayukawa is probably one of the most complex shonen female characters ever written, and Hikaru also has its fair share of complexity. Kyosuke at the start is the least complex of the three main characters, just an average boy with a somewhat rigid moral compass and a very strong case of chronic indecisiveness, but he kind of grows during the series. The manga is a bit long, 18 volumes, but I still think it's worth it.

Where I Get Manga: I also recommend Albebooks! It's how I'm finding most of Ghost Hunt, a good oldie! (I hope I spelled the website/app right)

I want a re-release of Life by Keiko Suenobu! Since it is so explicit in graphic self-harm and sexual violence, probably the only publisher I could see ever publishing it would be Seven Seas Entertainment. I really hope they are going to pick it up because they have done an amazing job with recent licenses!

I would LOVE a re-release of Life too! But keep Seven Seas FAR away from it. After the censoring and intentional mistranslations of other series, I don't want them handling series I really like.
