Great video! It's so easy to get swept up into the rare plant craze. I hate that plants have become status symbols with silly names. It's a relaxing, rewarding hobby, it shouldn't be a competition.

This is why I'm fairly picky about the plant creators I follow. I've been an outdoor gardener (veggies, herbs, decorative, etc) for much of my life and have only recently gotten into houseplants seriously. I hate to see it, but the houseplant community is SO MUCH different as a whole than the gardening community. To be clear, there are always exceptions and there are good and bad in both but houseplants seem to be much more competitive and much more of a status with many rare plant hobbiests. I love plants for he sake of the beauty and growth patterns, NOT because I want to show it off (although who doesn't want to show off their beautiful plants and share to an extent right? Lol) but many people are much nicer and much more willing to share their "secrets" in the gardening community. When it comes to house plants, I love my pothos just as much as my adansonii and even funnier, my favorite plant at the moment is a technical weed. Lol. It's one of those sensitive plants that closes up when you touch it and I love it. 😂 I've loved finding channels like this one and especially love finding other plant lovers who just love plants!

@@lindsey4178I totally agree with you. It bothers me a lot that a plant becomes a symbol of wealth and that they come to be at ridiculous prices. Many people compete to have them but they do not do it for the reasons of enjoying them (they forget that they are living beings) and taking care of them. In addition, now we have plants that were stolen from nature in danger of extinction in their natural habitat for those selfish reasons, an example of this is the Philodendron Spiritu Santi that exist more specimens in private "collections" than in their natural habitat.

It's amazing how many "rare" plants there are and how many people have them for sale. The first plants that I bought last year have now found their feet and are exploding with growth. I'm poised, like Brad about to catch his first sheep and get my moss poles ready for their first pole dance. :)

🎾Hi! Many years ago I was running a greenhouse for retail sales and interior plantscaping. That all went on the back burner for about 30 years while I raised my family. Now, retired, I have recently moved to Florida and have gotten back into plants. I was surprised by the aroid craze, especially since I had never even heard of the word. When I was in the biz, we had 2 aglaonemias, 2 pothos, and a couple of philodendrons. I can remember when Philodendron Xanadu first came out and the sensation it caused. These days I still find myself drawn to the old favorites, although I do have a manjula pothos and a philo Brazil. I love buying my plants small and growing them. It makes me sad to hear you don't think the States are safe any more. I can see how you might feel that way, as some of our cities have really gone down the drain. However, I live on the gulf coast of Florida in an area referred to as "The Nature Coast", and I can tell you I feel completely safe, as I did in my former home of southern New Jersey before I moved here 2 months ago. If you ever get the urge to swim with manatees ( related to the dugong), my husband and I would be happy to host you!

Yes, I absolutely agree with you. I’m in the middle of the USA, but even Chicago and St Louis aren’t nearly as dangerous as the right-wing Rupert Murdoch mudslinger “news” networks make them out to be. By focusing on the negatives, they cause US businesses to lose billions in tourism dollars, while claiming to be pro-business!! 🤦‍♂️ It’s reprehensible. 😺✌️

I do want to try 1 vertical grow pole, I currently have none, and appreciate your time in comparing it to the non-plastic backed poles. You prob brought up in other video and I missed it. Thank you :) last time I checked there were more mass shootings than days in the year so far… i don’t really feel comfortable walking around people carrying guns left right & centre. Regarding to the plant shop Q, it’s curious that here in Barcelona, with around 1.5 million people living here there are only 2 plants stores that actually have tropical/rare plants. And they are really really new, like 1 year or less opened, with very huge benefits in short time just because of the abscence of this physical shops. Of course there are tons of website, but it’s not the same that see those plants in real life: checking for pests, aspect, etc

Love your videos! I recently put a few of my aroids on moss poles but I seem to have a problem with the roots rooting into the moss pole. I keep my poles consistently moist and whenever arial roots reach the moss pole, the tip of the roots turn brown and dry up. Strangely enough, I see this on all my aroids that I put on moss poles. Now I am hypothesizing that the roots do this due to zinc toxicity because I made my moss poles with galvanized steel mesh. It is definitely not root rot since the arial roots dry up rather then turning mushy. Has someone come across a similar issue?

🏏🏉🏸 checking in from Murica'. I just bought 2 bags of sphagnum moss off of Amazon. For a total of 5lbs around 80 bucks. I'm hoping my hackery/tom foolery works for the first 2 poles I made. Using a dusting of sphagnum moss (the 3oz bag was quickly gobbled up), spanish and sheetmoss I cobbled together a "grow vertical" and moss pole.

I visited the Netherlands to see my boyfriend, and the plants over there are about 10x cheaper than in Finland, I bought so many plants (about 12) and only spent about the same amount of money that I would spend for two here in Finland

How do you fertilize logistically? I'm imagining you spraying the leaves in the shower but that's city water. Do you avoid letting that shower water hit the pot And Moss poles?

I use a liquid nutrient (GT Foliage Focus) with every watering :)

@sydneyplantguy what does the process look like? You spray down the leaves, moss pole and pot with the shower head or the hose. Then after do you go back and add more water that's mixed with fertilitizer from a watering can? Sorry I'm trying to understand the actual process
