What could be more satisfying than sailing around the world single-handed in an open boat? Finding your soul mate, getting married, and spending the rest of your life with her...Congrats to you both.

Ant Steward did the impossible and is a great hero. We were fortunate to meet up with him in Inhaca Island, Mozambique on his last leg back home. He was so exhausted and sun burnt but still full of spirit. His stories were unreal and we just sat next to this tiny little boat listening to his endeavors. We invited him later to the local pub for drinks and supper but he kindly excused himself, explaining that he hasn't slept for so many days that he will rather go hungry and catch up with lost sleep. When we returned the next day, he was gone. He missed his home too much! He is a big man with a big heart (and balls) that left us in awe and full of respect. Ant, where ever you are now, YOU ARE THE MAN!

if you miss home so much, you're not off for a world tous on a tiny boat that takes ages... just as much as you don't work permanently overtime in an office. Love home? Get there ASAP.

My hats off to you Ant. My brother and I have the world record for the smallest powerboat to cross the Atlantic Ocean and it too was an open boat. Our 21 foot flats boat had a T-top to protect us somewhat from the sun, but we froze since we went the Arctic Route. Our 8,312 miles trip took 76 days because we spent a lot of time trying to raise money for fuel. Your video reminded me of the pain of salt blisters, not fun! Congrats!

"There are old sailors and bold sailors, but there are no old bold sailors."Shackleton was the first mariner to come to my mind when I ran across this video. From the thread I see his son is named Shackleton. Bravo! Both of the voyages were epic in there respective times and circumstances, one done out of necessity, the other out of a driven need. As a C-22 sailor who's sailed the Gulf of California and The Great Lakes I know the nuts and bolts of taking a small boat offshore, where it's said they best not venture. I salute the man and the spirit of this adventure.

It seems that a lot of people are really concerned whether or not the boat my dad sailed on his voyage around the world is actually considered an "open boat". It is, by definition, an open boat. If you watched the video you would know that he slept in the cockpit, because there wasn't a cabin. By definition an open boat is a boat without a cabin. So again thank you for your concern, but its not very necessary.

Open boat - yes. Of course its an open boat, mine is only 10ft longer it has a cabin I can go into to escape the weather I can close the hatch climb into a bunk and sleep out of the wind, sun, cold, or heat relief from the elements even for just an hour is a huge advantage. His is an open boat with storage lockers that is all. Not even a canvas tent or cover to crawl under even if that makes a difference. Famous trips in open boats like Shackleton's and Bligh's all had canvas covered sections.

The quote about this video is from my website, where I have the full story about Ant's voyage. I am glad to see this video now available online, so that more people can learn about his incredible feat. For years the only place that anyone could read about it was the articles that I wrote for magazines and the story on my website. It really is an open boat voyage. He had a canvas cover over the front of the cockpit at the start of the voyage but soon lost it. After that he had no protection.

+OregonHerbalist Why would you try to diminish this great man's accomplishment? I bet you wouldn't have been able to make it out of the harbor in his boat. He got knocked upside down so many times he couldn't tell you how many. I was capsized once, it was hard enough finding the surface through the rigging and sail during the day, I can't imagine what it would be like at night during a storm. I've been in storms with 40 ft waves breaking over the bow and making a 500ft ship shudder, not to mention the wind and rain, think about being in a tiny speck of a boat in those conditions. You can't even imagine the unbelievable abuse this man endured in the first five days of his voyage, let alone the trip around the globe. It's scary to even think about it, try doing it. What this man accomplished is unbelievable, and may never be repeated by anyone, ever. There just isn't anyone crazy enough to think about it that is both mentally and physically tough enough and skilled enough to survive it. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it!
