The heavyweight title rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua is now set for Aug. 20 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, it was announced Sunday.
The fight had been planned for July 23, but now Joshua will have nearly 30 more days to work with new trainer Robert Garcia.
When they met in September, Usyk (19-0, 13 KOs) dominated Joshua en route to a unanimous decision victory to capture three heavyweight titles. Joshua, 32, quickly exercised the rematch clause, and neither boxer has competed since.
This preview will break down the fighters keys to victory, as well as look at the future of the heavyweight division.
So, without further ado, here's a fight countdown of Joshua/Usyk!

It's funny how people believe AJ had the "wrong gameplan", he had the right gameplan but Usyk is just better. AJ wanted to knock Usyk out while being defensively responsible, that's why he was using a pawing jab, the whole purpose of a pawing jab is to set up you right hand more easily and accurately while minimizing the risks of being countered, nonetheless Usyk dealt with him, he was able to control the distance, pace, and impose his jab and rhythm despite AJ's efforts. The worst for AJ was that he did land a couple of clean straight right hands when Usyk was jabbing, he landed the southpaw-killer punch directly and cleanly into Usyk's jaw, and Usyk did not go down, and he did not wobble. Now AJ has to go for the Hail Mary, all out and risk getting knocked out or stopped by Usyk's counters, because there is no other way, it's not because that's the best and most correct gameplan.. it's because he's in a desperate situation, between a rock and a hard place.

MY PREDICTION: - i think Joshua will come out aggressive in the first 3-4 rounds, but will start getting hit by shots in the pocket that hurt him or make him too uncomfortable, which will slowly but surely make him start to try to outbox Usyk again. i think a UD for Usyk or MAYBE a very late round stoppage by Usyk. edit: i just feel like Joshua has been a little gun shy since the first Ruiz fight, and i think thats why he tried outboxing Usyk instead of using his obvious size advantage to bully him. - ill try to come back to this comment so hopefully it doesnt age like milk !
@alan5863
@alan5863 2 жыл бұрын
that was peter fury's observation as well and makes sense when you look at what happened in the fight - he got hit by a left to the side of the head in the first round and didn't fancy it. That explains the corner shouting encouragement, not being able to say after the fight what the game plan was and as you say not trying to bully him.
@davidembacher1682
@davidembacher1682 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a fair prediction. The best game plan can only work if it can survive a punch in the face, and AJ has some form for losing his way under pressure. After Klitschko floored him, he was pretty vulnerable for a couple of rounds; after Ruiz floored him, he totally fell apart. And under pressure in the final round against Usyk, he had no answers. Usyk on the other hand has the mental strength to maintain focus and composure for a full 12 rounds, despite coming under pressure (Chisora was mauling him in the early rounds and Joshua actually did land a couple of clean shots on him) and he has the mental agility to instantly adapt to any changing situation.

Have to agree, I’m sure that the war in the Ukraine is of serious concern to Usyk, but I very much doubt he saw any action. Usyk is the consummate professional, he’ll be using the Ukraine war as another tactic in mind games against Joshua.

Lately Ukrainians athletes have been performing well at other sports too...FINA swimming championships for instance. The other option for Usyk was to vacate the titles...rather he would have been forced to. Funny as Usyk may sound, he has a very balanced head and wouldn't make decision in haste.

Joshua actually had an almost perfect game plan. If he adds slight more aggression and a few other things he might have actually won. So assuming everyone’s 100%, and of course any random nonsense let’s assume AJ goes for broke, what does that mean? He’s just going to throw more punches with more power? Ok I agree that increases the odds of him landing, and if they’re more powerful shots obviously they could rock Usyk or even KO him. Now what happens if he doesn’t get Usyk out of there? What happens if he lands decently early, but starts getting countered? He kept his stamina even for most of that first fight and never really gassed out until the last round… anyway the point is if Joshua fought the way he fought in the first fight he’d actually probably win 2/10 matches against Usyk. If he goes hard early that may raise his chances early in the fight but I’d say almost guarantees he gets finished after rd 4. The other thing is we’re assuming Usyk doesn’t have an answer for a rough savage fight. He does. Watch him vs Joyce, FA, Hunter, and Briedis. Even in the first fight Joshua tried getting cute a few times and Usyk physically through him off halfway across the ring lol. Point is that as with the first fight it’s all about Usyk, Judging, and game plans. Healthy Usyk with fair judges wins. Compromised Usyk with fair judges probably still wins but it’ll be close. If the judges aren’t fair Usyk needs a finish or an even more dominant performance than the first fight.

Exactly my thoughts, AJ had the correct gameplan, but Usyk is just better than him. Going all out is not really the "correct gameplan", it's his last resort, and by doing so AJ increases a little bit his chances in the first few rounds, but his chances of losing increase exponentially if he doesn't take him out early, he will be the one kissing the canvas and not being able to beat the count.

Great analogy. I expect Usyk to get a stoppage in this fight, I feel he needs to because… how much will Eddie Hearn be paying off the ref and judges to protect his golden boy? Usyk must take this fight out of the hands of possible corruption.
@PandzaMan
@PandzaMan 2 жыл бұрын
If Joshua is to win then a similar game plan but needs to up his work rate and pressure Usyk more, and work the body. First 4 rounds are extremely important. He needs to hurt Usyk’s body to compromise his footwork, Yes Usyk has an amazing ring IQ but it’s his footwork (and engine) that’s his ultimately weapon, crunch that body and slow him down.

Joshua is a great fighter but sadly you can't dominate the Heavyweight division with a glass chin. Joshua's ring IQ is almost nil. Once he gets rocked, he is done. He usually can't come back from behind. Joshua is definitely far far away from all the elite heavyweight boxers for sure.

Anthony Joshua cares about human rights just like Lebron James and Eileen Gu care about human rights. They are somehow critical of the social systems in the US and Britain but somehow decidedly silent when it comes to Saudi, China or any other communist or royal dictatorship that offers them a paycheck. Lebron James, Joshua and Eileen Gu do not seem to care about asian, middle eastern or eastern european human rights, or they would speak up rather than being so forcefully silent on any issue beyond that of Black Lives Matter. Its Black Human Rights they protest. The rest? Could not care less.

As good as he is technically, I think one of usyks best attributes his actually his chin. He has taken clean shots throughout his career, and some from some big hitters like gassiev, breidis, chisora and aj who is a very big puncher. While you can tell some of those shots clearly hurt, he's never been actually buzzed.
