Based on experience alone, Gonzalez is the obvious pick. As this is Olascuaga third 12 round fight, never went 12 rounds and has fought mostly weak opposition. Based on style match up, Olascuaga has nearly all the advantages. Except he's weak to counters, flat footed and doesn't cut off the ring well enough. Who to pick, we need to ask these questions: 1. Gonzalez has had 1 fight in nearly 2 years, will he look and fight the same when he fought Iwata? 2. If true, can Olascuaga cut off the ring, punish/defend against Gonzalez back foot jabs and counters? 3. Which ties into, can Olascuaga put pressure and walk Gonzalez down? Instead of just standing there waiting, playing Gonzalez game? Gonzalez seems to be the obvious pick when you add it all up, but he has been inactive. He's a question mark.

I think Olascauga is the more obvious pick at this stage. Bomba was outgunned at 112, so moved down to 108 where he enjoyed success against smaller opponents. Now, in pursuit of the biggest purses, he’s moved back up. But he’s not been very active, whereas Olascauga is coming off two brutal finishes. Gonzalez can win, but he’s not the obvious pick and an underdog for a reason.

@@PunchPerfectBoxing Did you even read the post? I said "if true". Yes, of course Gonzalez track record at 112 isn't great. Heck it's not good at all, BUT Gonzalez does have the experience advantage. I never said Gonzalez was the favorite. He went 12 rounds with Santiago. Olascuaga is the favorite, due to Gonzalez being a question mark.

You said he is the obvious pick? It’s in the Comment. If he was the obvious pick, he would likely be the favourite. I’m not sure how you’ve misunderstood me.

@@PunchPerfectBoxing "Obvious pick if Gonzalez looks and fights the same as in the Iwata fight, if Olascuaga can't cut off the ring and pressure him through-out the fight", yes Gonzalez would clearly be the favorite. The bookies don't get the favorite correct every time. As an example: Beterbiev is clearly the obvious pick but he's not the favorite. Clarke is clearly the obvious pick against Fabio but again, Clarke isn't the favorite.

@TheHandHistoryVault Beterbiev & Clarke aren’t clearly the obvious pick, though, because all polls seem to suggest Bivol & Wardley are slight favourites which is reflected with the bookies. If they were clearly obvious picks, the odds would have swung by now. My point was that Olascuaga is the obvious pick to pretty much everyone right now, regardless of whether Gonzalez gets it right or not (which we’ll only know on the night anyway).

Excuses after excuses for Gonzalez from you. Clearly ducking Kenshiro at 108. Also, Iwata got the best of him. Gonzalez was on his bike running later half of the fight. Gonzalez did well but people are underrating the work Iwata put in when Gonzalez constantly on the back foot. I scored it 116-112 for Iwata. It's like you think running is boxing, it's not.
@PunchPerfectBoxing2 ай бұрын
I didn’t, and haven’t, defended him when it comes to Kenshiro. Gonzalez wasted Kenshiro, Mr Honda & Mr Tanabe’s time. Believe me, as someone who was in communication between the camps when the fight was cancelled, I know how messy things got. Yes, Bomba was on his bike against Iwata. But he is not going to engage in a war that he can’t win. That’s not how boxing works either. You don’t just simply entertain for the sake of it. You win by any means necessary. Gonzalez got stopped at 112lbs for trying to fight fire with fire. Of course he needed to be smarter. Iwata didn’t do enough to become champion that night. And that’s a fact. You could also argue that Bomba didn’t do enough to remain champion which is also fair. But both men left plenty on the table in that fight and neither should have complained had they lost.
