As for that mind map part you were talking about, when you listed all the stuff with the fish. I tried a similar situation with things I do in the morning in Vietnamese. I was doing it before in a list mode but I found out when I did it with the clock thing you did and arranged it in alphabetical order and it was easier to bring up :)

Normally I use alphabetization too. But in this case, the logic of the clock and the numerical mnemonic code is more than enough. 🙏

The biggest way I've used mind mapping in relation to memory palaces is to memorize the information content of a book. A few years ago I saw one of your videos about memorizing books, and have tried it several times since then. Some of the experiments were very successful, while some others flopped, but I have learned a lot about how to refine my own personal process. In particular, the time that was most successful was the most recent time (earlier this year) in which I used mind mapping first before putting it into a memory palace in order to first identify and establish important connections, group similar ideas into unified complexes, organize, etc. It resulted in the information on each station in the memory palace being much more meaningful and coherent, and therefore has made the subsequent use of the memory palace for recall much easier, because I took the time to do some preprocessing first. I'm excited to keep trying it. I also used mind mapping to articulate my personal vision when I first read "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and have used the technique several times since then to revisit and refine my vision, but I did not use memory palaces for that process. Just found it interesting that you suggested its use for the development of vision, though. The idea of using the mind map itself seems interesting, but I have not tried it yet, because my mind maps usually end up being multilayered and interconnected enough that formulating them as a linear journey and then correctly remember it requires more mental overhead that it's worth, and it's just easier to re-write the information chunks linearly before putting them into a "real world" memory palace.
@AnthonyMetivierMMM2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing these experiences! Great that you've also used mind mapping as part of vision development. About the experiments that flopped, do you have any ideas what went wrong? I always love to think through such cases and see what might work differently if a second pass is possible. More often than not, there's a tweak that can make a difference, big or small that is worth experiencing.

Dear Dr Metivier, thank you for making this video. I note you allude, at 5:25, to using mind maps to learn mandarin. I always assumed you had exclusively used memory palaces to do this. I was wondering whether you have referred to your use of mind maps to learn mandarin elsewhere in your work, at greater length? I learned the rudiments of it the old-fashioned way, long ago, and then stagnated for years because, well, the old-fashioned way is not much then. Then, this time last year, I was blessed to have stumbled on your work, and since then have made life-changing progress in so many things I had wanted to make progress in for years, but had failed to, because the cognitive load required made such progress unfeasible alongside the demands of daily life, With respect to Chinese I have made a handful of memory palaces, and the way I integrate the characters is by writing them out when I carry out recall rehearsal of the contents of the memory palaces, which is rather an ad hoc way of doing it. I also sometimes use the etymology of the characters in coming up with the images inside the memory palaces, but I would be very interested in improving my approach if I could integrate mind maps, as you have done, but I'm not quite sure how to do it. After I first watched the above video, I tried writing out the steps of a bread baking recipe, to see if I could use a mind map as a memory palace, and had medium success - I think medium, because processes are not as easy to reduce to images as foreign language vocabulary is. Then I tried it to learn the 4th declension Latin noun senatus - that again I abandoned (to soon perhaps) because the first three declensions of it are identical : senatus, senatus, senatus, then senatum etc. I'm going to have another go today with 5 or so distinct latin words perhaps. Thank you for everything - you are a miracle
@AnthonyMetivierMMM2 ай бұрын
Thanks for this. Technically, I did use Memory Palaces exclusively, because these mind maps are being used as Memory Palaces with a clock-like structure for the stations. Some of them linked to traditional MPs in the beginning, but that proved not entirely necessary. Note, however, that no language learning is "exclusive" to Memory Palaces. There always needs to be reading, writing, speaking and listening involved. The memorization needs to be embedded in those other activities. With respect to how I approached Mandarin with mind mapping in greater detail, this is covered in the FAQ section of the MMM Masterclass. Some familiarity with the part in the vocabulary course where I talk about dealing with radicals will be helpful too. For declensions in Latin, there's a simple way to divide a wall in a Memory Palace to do this. I talk a bit about it at the end of my interview with Luke Ranieri on this channel.

This video is a pure 💎 I always wanted to ask you about how to capitalize on the traditional mind mapping, and most likely how to combine it with other memory techniques like memory palaces. But is that better used for memorizing concepts and arguments and ideas rather than verbatim text (like scriptures and songs etc)?
@AnthonyMetivierMMM2 ай бұрын
Good question. I can't imagine how exactly to use mind maps for verbatim memorization. So although I think Buzan abandoned it for memory too early, my best solutions so far are the clock-like limited Memory Palace formation. But I use mind mapping for so much more than memory. It's a kind of mental Swiss Army knife with at least as many applications as I mention in this video.

That is really an interesting approach I’m curious how one could incorporate summaries with memory palaces
@AnthonyMetivierMMM10 күн бұрын
I'm not sure I would incorporate summaries at all. Rather, I would (and do) memorize the key points and then write out my own summaries from memory. I often suggest this approach in these videos.
@PaulVirtual2 ай бұрын
Effortlessly? Usually you say the effort is the point and the joy. And I agree.

True, though I find mind mapping to be a different proposition. The overall scope of the activity really can be effortless compared to the effortful joys of active recall using Memory Palaces.

I watched a lot of videos regarding this topic and learnt mind palacing but, mind mapping must be done after understanding the topic or while understanding? Things that are supposed to be memorized are the ones whose mind palace we have to make? What about numericals based subjects? If i have 40 chapters how should i proceed like mind palace seems like a last step to me because first take a lecture,then understand and do questions and at last the stuff to be memorised in a memory palace which is basically last step, how it should be done than?
@becomingbetteratmypace2 ай бұрын
I started to use this method like the past few days ago if you have videos that explain these questions ,can you share the link or simply answer I don't have much time because of classes and a tight exam schedule. Btw i liked the very first video i watched of your like it changed the whole game for me in mind palacing and stuff❤❤

Thanks for checking out this channel. I personally mind map at all stages of understanding. Technically, I don't think the process of understanding is ever complete. @AnthonyMetivierMMM2 ай бұрын
"Best" is a dangerous word, in my view. Basically, if you find that you like using mnemonics, then it's worth leaning the skill fully and completely. But you'll want to make it part of reading, writing, speaking and listening frequently to discussions of your topics for best results.

Im trying to create the perfect study method for me and I just added to it mind mapping as I find it really effective but the question is.. once i have made it, how am i supposed to revise it for my upcoming exam? Should i just grab the mind map and start active recalling all the information? Or whats better? Thanks!
@jstjuanguiАй бұрын
And also I would LOVE more content about mind mapping with memory palace both techniques mixed at the same time please!!
@AnthonyMetivierMMMАй бұрын
Great that you're crafting your own study methodology. I would suggest trying to reproduce the information in writing without reference to anything other than what you've placed in your mind. Refer back to the source materials or mind maps only after having tested. This process is true active recall. Anything else borders on or is completely cheating and will diminish the formation of memory. Making mistakes is okay. Mistakes are the greatest teacher.

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM Ok so what you mean is that when I start revising the mind map instead of looking at it I have to try to reproduce it and write what I remember?

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM personally I think of them as tools For me no one is superior I just came across that people say you remember things better if you can’t remember how it looks etc. Interestingly in one podcast he did mention that words are somewhat better than visuals his example was the word mammal and that it summarises different kinds of d of animals within one term Which you cannot do with diagrams
