I find that I usually prefer Texture over Detail to sharpen fine feathers and fur. Just a thought.

An excellent tutorial on editing a wildlife file, where I hit a problem is the LR Noise Reduction, and then workflow becomes workstop, because it is so slow. Both Topaz and DXO are far quicker and I cannot see any difference between them and LR in the finished image.

Thanks for the updated video on how to you process your workflow when dealing with different wildlife situations. I especially like the example of using the masking technique in the example photo's. I always learn something new watching your video's!

Rookie question: in the photo _DSC2037.NEF, 700 mm (200.0-500.0 mm f/5.6), what it the 700 mm? Doesn't that conflict with the 200-500 designation?
@PhotoGearFun

Most likely he used a 1.4x teleconverter for this shot. In that case you you multiply the teleconverter value (1.4x) by the focal length. So if he shot at 500mm on the lens with the 1.4x teleconverter the effective focal length would be 700mm. Hope this helps.

@@PhotoGearFunI've never had good results using a TC14E II on the 200-500mm.

I am not sure the lens corrections will always work on DNG files (after Denoise). I could not figure out why I could not get lens correction to work on a PSD file. The answer I got back from the Adobe community was that the lens corrections built into LR generally only work on RAW files. Also, they noted that lens corrections on a Sony camera/lens combination are generally applied by the camera and it is not necessary to apply in LR. Thanks for another great video.

Excellent video. I have a similar workflow, but I typically decide whether to use Denoise after most of my editing. Often, the image noise will be acceptable until I start brining up the dark areas, at which point I will decide to Denoise. The thing I really like about Lightroom Denoise is it rarely alters color and maintains all the edits in a way that lets me see them, change them, or copy them just like before the Denoise. I find, though that adjusting Lightroom Denoise more than 50:almost always destroys too much detail for me, and I usually try to keep it under 30. I would rather keep a little noise than flatten out the image frequency too much. I wish Lightroom Denoise was available with masks so I could Denoise the background more than the subject.

Thanks again for a great tutorial. I always learn something to make my workflow and editing go a little better. Today it was using 'clipping' while in mask mode. I miss the Alt key function when adjusting the black and white points. This works beautifully. Thanks again.

Cool video thank you :-) Do you happen to know if you can use a mask to select just the background and then only apply the AI de-noise to the background…? I’m asking as the noise is often most noticeable / more of a problem in the background and de-noise may not be necessary and/or needed to a lesser extent in the subject… M

Great idea, to integrate the noise handling into the workflow like this. And we need to talk about noise. Without noise in the communication. I have started to call the noise in my images "Bayer noise" and my position is that in 95% of my cases, it is "Bayer noise" and not sensor or camera noise. The translation of "Bayer noise" is that the raw conversion under the Bayer paradigm was inadequate or has failed. The challenge of Bayer nose now is exacerbated or aggravated because camera manufacturers like Nikon dropped the OLPF from their higher/high resolution cameras. The positive impact of no OLPF on sharpness is dramatic and it also improves low light sensitivity. But raw processing now is more difficult. In the light of all this, when looking at your images in Lightroom Classic, could you set the image info in such a way that "we" can see the camera that the image was shot with, or the image resolution, and potentially lens and exposure settings. This to answer the OLPF question.

Outstanding as always! I’m having a problem with LR Classic. When I “Mask” a subject the exposure always jumps to total black or totally over exposed! My buddy is having the same problem! Any idea what’s going on? It drives me crazy! Thanks!

I can suggest a couple possible fixes. After you've created a new mask, make sure the "Reset Sliders Automatically" box just above the Tone sliders (Exposure etc.) is and always remains checked. If that doesn't fix it, try unchecking the "Show Overlay" box under Mask 1. If that fixes your issue, you can change the overlay color you get when the box is checked from black or white to red or something else by experimenting with choices clicking the box or the three dots to the right of "Show Overlay." Clicking the three dots, I have Color Overlay, Automatically Toggle Overlay, Auto Hide Masking Panel, and Show Unselected Mask Pins only checked. These are likely default settings. And then if I click the box to the left of the three dots, I choose the color red. With those settings and with "Reset Sliders Automatically" checked, I don't have your issue. Good luck.

I thought you might use the new lens blur feature to blur the backgrounds but I guess not. Is it a good option? Thanks.

My workflow for wildlife (bird): Crop @ LR, remove noise on eyes within LR, run Topaz DeNoise (I do not use Topaz Photo AI ... creates color noise ), LR Masking and light / Highlight / shadow, color, contrast / Black, Texture .. etc. Export

Hey @AnthonyMorganti how do you know when you make an image too sharp? Any rule of thumb?
@sounderdavis5446
@sounderdavis5446 5 ай бұрын
Like most pros, Anthony is conservative in sharpening, but based on his videos, seems mostly to be using his subjective feeling about what looks natural to him on his monitor. One clear sign it's been pushed *way* too far (not seen in his videos, because he avoids pushing it this far): when there's a dark subject against a bright background or vice versa, watch for the appearance of a thin white line around the outside of the subject that gets thicker the more the image is oversharpened. You can experiment by pushing Sharpness, Texture, Clarity, and Dehaze sliders all the way to the right to really exaggerate it, to see what it looks like when it's wrong, and then pull way back until it looks natural. The before-and-after difference when adding sharpening should be subtle.

Matt K. has now gone to a completely new workflow using Lightroom (cloud) only and no longer using Lightroom Classic. In October, Lightroom now can work with internal files and not just cloud files. What is your opinion on this workflow?

A good video with some useful tips thanks Anthony and I wasn't aware the saturation slider within the mask behaved differently to the global saturation slider.
