As a Macquarie University alumnus currently pursuing a PhD in translation studies, I found this discussion between Anthony Pym and Jan-Louis Kruger to be exceptionally insightful. The depth of analysis on the current trends and future directions in translation studies is invaluable, and I hope this is the first of many such dialogues to come. From a personal perspective, I believe that the essence of knowledge extends beyond the information itself; it is intrinsically tied to its lineage and legacy. The groundbreaking work of historical figures like Boole and Fourier has paved the way for contemporary scholars like Claude Shannon and Alan Oppenheim. This enduring intellectual legacy serves as both inspiration and a foundation for current and future research. The admiration and respect towards these pioneering scholars, even 200 years on, demonstrates the lasting impact of their contributions. I think podcasts like this could serve to connect like-minded individuals, as the vision shared by Jan-Louis Kruger is compelling yet requires concerted effort to actualize. Reaching a broader audience could very well be the catalyst for turning these insightful thoughts into meaningful actions.
