As long as luminar ignores Metadata stored in xmp sidecar files it is a no go for me to use it as a raw editor. It's not a bad editor per se, but this is something essential if they want to be compatible with raw files

I've tried Luminar from the start, and now and then I check in to see the updates. It's a shame that the most important feature still lacks, witch is overall speed. Specially compared to Lightroom Classic, its a day and night difference. From applying effects till exporting multiple files, Liminar massively underperforms. I case you are wondering. I am a Windows and Mac user.

I've been using NEO for a couple of years now, after ditching Photoshop, and was wondering if they have any plans to add more features to the portrait section or if it will only be updating Aperty? I don't do much in the way of portraiture but would find it handy within Neo rather than purchasing a separate App.

I'm not 100% but my hunch is Neo's portrait tools won't see too much development, at least for the time being. Aperty will get the focus there and we'll see the gulf between the two programs grow in terms of portrait editing.

Without sounding negative there's nothing in this update that particularly excites me. The virtual copies are most probably the only thing I will use. What would really get me excited is the ability to soft proof and print.

Sometimes I pour days into prepping, recording, cutting a free video for people and because the title is not as clickable it dies a death after a couple thousand views. A real shame. Sorry you clicked and didn't feel you got what you hoped for. I felt I posed a question based on a comment I'd received a few times in Aperty vids saying "this (aperty) was the end for Neo" so I thought it was a legitimate point to address, and as it was in the video, also a legitimate thumbnail quote🤷‍♂️Anyway, at your request, @Mark-fs7ok I've changed the title and thumb (and since I have, disappointingly the views have plummeted 😵).

That color transfer is absolutely gold! Much much better than lightroom. I also enjoy the simplicity of creating albums and sorting the photos, it's easier to do in Luminar.

I have been using Capture One for photo editing for many years. Have now tried luminar neo for a while but sorry. The raw converter in luminar neo is nowhere near the one used in capture one.

so much potential in this application. I tried using it for a year - but all the gen erase etc tools are subscriptions just like adobe and light room is significantly better. for the basic stuff, if you are just using the saturation, cropping, highlight / lowlights - apple photos is fine. no gen fill - it really needs improving (they are all subscription extra plugins). i bought the lifetime licence on the strength of the amazing reviews. i cant see ever using it again. it cant even export webp - a decade old format used for web everywhere. the one plus i did like was seeing the edit history and being able to modify / remove any changes. i hope they fix these issues.. i removed the app after my ":full upgrade" just made more places for "hey buy this extra plugin to do the thing you wanted". neo im sure will go the same way as liminar AI - discontinued. aperty does look interesting though.

And yet Neo is still missing the option to resize an image during editing (Not crop but resize). Can only do it on export but I want to do it before applying the edits. Something so simple in Photoshop, so it's lucky I only use Neo as a PS plugin.

It all depends on when you purchased your copy. The best way to tell is to log in to your Skylum account and it'll automatically calculate your options or if it's included. Some of the base functions will be rolled out to all, the new tools are for subscribers and relatively recent purchases as I understand it.

Thanks for showing us the update, Anthony. And about the last part of the video, I really hope you're right! I believe Luminar is a good software but not professional enough for the colour management process. For example, it's not possible to create HSL profiles with colorcheckers, the eye dropper is limited to the 0/255 view and many others thing that are available on LR or CRaw. I want to trust in continuous upgrades and improvements, in order to definitely avoid Adobe. Cheers mate 😊

The colour transfer feature is very promising. Can you use a photo with a certain style, edit it slightly and then save as a preset or another 'colour transfer' preset? Ideal if you have a series of photos now or in the future that you can apply that same edited style.

So the Color Transfer tool can use any photo as a reference. So yes you could edit a shot the way you like, save it, and then use that as a reference in part of a preset that uses the color transfer tool.

Update landed but the AI search thing seems to be broken/missing, I type 'dog' in a folder full of photographs of dogs 'no results were found' in fact anything I type that doesn't have a file name the same returns 'no results were found' :(

Help...I loaded the update yesterday and played around just a little. Today, when I try to open Neo it crashes. Tried a computer restart, it crashes. Tried messaging Skylum's chat, no response.

I'd try uninstalling it from your OS and re-installing after a full restart. If no go, roll back to the previous version (just for now) until you can get Skylum to identify the problem. Make sure your catalogues are backed up first.

This APP is nice, but on OS X it crashes so many times, backups take long time if you have huge catalog... at this point "what is the point" ? Ideally there is an option to make only backups of edited photos (linked, lost edits - so later we can recover it). as in the end only edits matter... catalog - anyway I have it cataloged via directories on internal/external disks..

IDK about the last update but I feel that Skylum is going to start pushing people to the subscription model moreso now than they have in the past, and that future updates may ONLY be for subscription users, like everyone else is doing, which is a bit sad because I have t he perpetual license of Neo, so my guess is I won't be getting anymore updates (I don't use it that much anyway so for me it's not a huge deal, I've gotten my money's worth out of it over the past few years -- paid $99 for it -- and I know that perpetual licenses don't always ensure a continued business model in some cases, and that's why a lot of companies are moving to subscription, but they should maybe at least do paid upgrades perhaps with a discount. I think you can still buy a perpetual license, but it's limited (no add-ons, and perhaps plug-in support and third party support may be more limited). That being said, they do still trail in some areas particularly AI when compared to the other programs/options out there. I'd say once they do that, then maybe it can be justified that people would want to pay a monthly subscription fee.

Love the color transfer tool. What a great way to learn different color gradings! Question: will this work with my integrated graphics? Although the laptop is new, it doesn't have a standalone graphic card. (Yes, I know, but I was lacking in money, ya know. ;) ) If Neo stopped being upgraded today, I'd still consider it well worth the cost as a general editing program, but I'm glad they will continue to put time and effort into the program.

Hello Anthony, Thank you for your good and detailed presentation. You are already the third person to do this and I still heard and saw new things. What was missing was the presentation of the generation tools. There are supposed to be significant improvements in generative deletion and swapping. What do you think? If I understood correctly (I didn't grow up speaking English), then you want Skylum to allow you to search for several terms at the same time (e.g. horse + American flag). hello, maybe you made a video clip about this and I could not find it, but I face the following situation. I'm a wedding photographer, which means I have to edit about 1000 pictures taken with different exposures, so that they all look the same. So far, in lightroom, I just select them all, hit auto edit and it edits them all to a decent level, on the darker ones it automatically raises the brightness and vice versa, etc. I had a good starting point from which to edit further. Now, I would like to go to luminar, variant at 60 euros, subscription for a year, but I do not know if I have the option here, to select more different pictures and edit them automatically to a decent level. can you help me with this information?

There is the enhance AI tool with Accent AI for auto enhancement, however, as a former wedding photographer I can tell you adjusting exposures to a normal baseline is one thing that LR does much better... Luminar would be great for adding a look to the set but not so much that initial part of the process.

I think the catalog enhancements and searching tools are useful. Color masking seems to need constant tweaking to make it work properly. Never gets it right on the first click. And finally, color transfer is just gimmickry, to me. What's the use in taking photographs only to paint over them to create a hit or miss mess? And, why not make NEO the best portrait editor? Why go off with another costly app? Answer is obvious.

🤔My Trial version does NOT show detailed view of thumbnails, only small, medium, large and largest; no minimal, no detailed view and no star rating ability. Is this a function of the Trial version? Seems strange and no way to change this in Preferences. Some functions must be crippled in the trial version; the search function also doens't work.

As a replacement for Photoshop it's a good option. It was never initially intended as a digital asset management tool but rather a photo editor. Plus i had years of LR catalogues that i was happy with. That's why I kept using LR for that side of things. The Neo library features (unlike it's editing tools) was rudimentary until this update. But if you're looking to replace just Photoshop, then all good as PS is only an editor rather than a photo organising tool.

I was going to buy Topaz Labs last week, for my missed focus shots. I find I get a substantial amount of them on my Canon 5DMK4, even when I put the focus point on the face of a group member. The number of times the focus point is in the right spot but the camera focuses on a face well in the background just blows my mind for a $5K camera. Anyway then I remembered I bought a few Luminar Products a while back, including NEO, and after seeing some of your vids went and checked out the new sharpening tool. Ended up costing my like $70 to upgrade my old Neo sub, including any upgrades that happen in 2025! Glad I watched your vids lol, happy with the product and saved some coin lol. Didn't know Luminar was dabbling in the Portrait game. I used to use Portrait Pro Studio Max, but I only do four or five portraits a year so don't think it's worth upgrading to their latest. Keen to try out the Luminar options. I'd much prefer to just be using Adobe and Luminar, rather than having 20 products all from different companies. Thanks again for the vids! Good news that there are two separate developer teams for Neo and Aperty. I hope you're right that Neo's sticking around. Skylum has a history of pulling the plug on some apps, and we'd hate to see that happen again with Neo, or to have the Neo feature set weaken. Aperty looks good but is too expensive and specialized for my needs, which rarely include editing photos of people; when I need to do that, I have other apps that do a pretty good job of it with no extra fees.

I have a ridiculous purchase history with Skylum as well, multiple copies of the same program too. That said, they even hide the history of how much I've spent on NEO alone. This is yet another money grab with features that should have been included from previous purchases. Buying the previous update to get access to the GEN tools (which have been garbage), and the studio light module - which frankly isn't very good, etc. Here we are again waiting on features we pre-ordered, which is a model that suggests to me they are banking on enough people to keep it even if it underwhelms.

The tools in respect to catalog are pretty slick. I'm going to have to reset my catalog to incorporate a better structure. Till now I've only used the catalog to bring in individual images to process - ie an oversized file/open 😅

G'day Anthony When I heard about colour swapping, I wondered what the difference would be from a LUTS. THERE IS STILL WORK TO BE DONE ON IT BEFORE I WOULD USE IT. But regarding the catalogue..... ..... I'm stunned and eager to use it. I like the colour mask and it's affects. ( There is not much difference from colour copy, but it's adjustable a lot more. On my wish list (aside from Upscale AI being semi fit for purpose) is Portrait Bokeh having masking tools (I think there are a few other tools that also need this but can't think of the top of my head which) it really niggles me having the fantastic masking tools as part of most of the functions but not in others.

Luminar is interesting, but honestly severely lacking in a lot of capabilities. For me, I can't see it replacing Lightroom for many, many years. I shoot a wide variety of genres, so I've seen limitations all over. It's a great editor, but it still feels like a plug-in to me. Until they can integrate with Imagen Ai / Visual Flow / other AI based things and provide shortcuts / hotkeys, I'm stuck at Adobe lol. Sky replacement is great, until you have a photo that gets a gigantic halo. No problem, just fix the mask, right? Wrong, you can't actually fix it because it applied some type of blur around the building. This is the type of stuff I run into all over the program.

It's amazing how much functionality are not there, that's already in the filesystem. A LOT of tags, exif data, and other data fields are already built-in in the operating system. And here these software companies are lagging behind decades. All Lightroom competitors should be able to have even more extensive organizing system for photos, as it's built-in stuff. Can't recall if I mentioned it in the vid (it's been a while now) but most of the camera's EXIF data is all searchable and sortable via the filter dropdown. ISO, focal length, camera model, edit date etc etc.

Affinity Photo or Photoshop, let's say, Affinity photo can make faster and much, much better job than you do at minute, 10:39, here color messed up real bad. To finish, practice a little more your camera and you'll be happier without killing your work.

Hi @hepgeoff The guy who I was referencing didn't know that. Neither did several others who indicated that the launch of Aperty marked the end of Luminar. I felt it was a valid concern to address, and also pertinent to Skylum just releasing another update. So maybe you "knew" it wasn't, but the generalised "we" may be a majority, but by no means represented the entirety of viewers. Cheers for the feedback though. I appreciate your time commenting. I bought Luminar AI back then, believing what they advertised as lifetime ownership. Yeah..........

I think the lifetime ownership comes down to understanding the definition. It's not that you'll get unlimited updates forever it's that you can boot up your machine, open the program and you're good to go without the licence (ie the ability to launch and use the software) expiring. I know I can still use Luminar AI on my computer.

Pedant society here... saying that virtual copies don't take up disk space is not quite correct, it has to store the details of the differences between the copies somewhere. It won't be the same as a whole new copy of the file but it will take up some space.
