That moment btw was an homage to Star Wars. It’s mirroring when Luke is being trained by Yoda and senses his friends are in trouble. He decides to end his training early and go save them against Yoda wishes (just like the Guru). Think the creators were just giving a nod to one of their favorite films. I think to Avatars credit, at least they made Aang feel uncomfortable with finishing the training to begin with, because he was being asked to rid himself of all earthly desires (and he’s an immature kid that doesn’t want to give up his love for Katara). So in a way, Aang abandoning his avatar state training makes sense - because deep down he didn’t want to complete it. So it was just an excuse for him to bounce. So the scene makes more sense then Star Wars. I think one thing Avatar did really well, is show how the “hero journey” isn’t that glamorous through the eyes of a child, who is being asked to give up everything and grow up before he is ready. We see that theme pop up again in the final season where Aang has to face the reality that he has to kill the main villain of the series.
