There are some basic rules in the pit that always need to be observed. 1) If someone falls, help them up 2) If someone doesn't want to mosh, help them to the edge of the pit. 3) Do not deliberately hurt anyone. 4) If someone is disobeying Rule 1, 2 or 3, fuck 'em up. Aside from that, yes, people still get hurt, but everyone's aware of that risk before getting in the pit.

at a slayer show this fuckhead in a button up shirt was blindsiding everyone, and even knocked me down, so when the pit wave was coming around and gave him a hard shove into it, watching his stupid stunned face as he fell sideways was amazing. Also, he didn't knock anybody else down when i did that so i didn't feel bad.

Moshing is a friendly activity. There are certain places where you basically just fight each other. But at real metal and punk shows it's all about fraternity. It doesn't look like it from the outside, but from inside you can feel the rhythm. It's a really violent dance. And at every metal show I've been to where the band was big enough to bring in non-metalheads, some dude-bro fratboy asswipe thought to himself "let's go fight some kids in the moshpit," and then they get their asses beat real hard and thrown out of the show. Because that's not what moshing is about. If you knock someone down, you pick them up. If you hurt someone, you take care of them. If you're a big giant motherfucker, you're protecting people from the chaos. If you're a tiny little 14 year old girl, you're the most dangerous person in the pit. Seriously, their little elbows are like knives... I once went into a pit with my glasses on (fucking dumb on my part, got excited and forgot to take them off) and of course they fell off while I was in the pit. And some guy three times my size single-handedly stopped everyone in the vicinity and helped me find my glasses. Which I did, put them in my pocket, and we went right back to it.

Its hard for newcomers to metal to deal with the speed, cause they are definitely looking for groove. You guys like Black Sabbath a lot, cause it was groovy, dark, cool lyrics, etc. When you're a metal head, and you've heard Black Sabbath a million times, and you want something just a little heavier/darker/faster, then you find Metallica. Then you want something heavier, faster, etc, and you find Anthrax/Slayer. Then death metal, black metal, etc. You gotta work your way up to fast thrash like Anthrax/Slayer. But once you're there, you find the groove easily. Its definitely there, just really fast.

anthrax sucks, there was a groove in that song, its the singing, and production, the lyrical content, did I mention the singing, sorry bro but anthrax sucks. go watch vh1 classics. listen to how much scott ian loves getting interviewed by them. production, sound quality, lyrical content, vocals, the riffs, the solo, holy shiiit. throw it in the trash. part of the so-called big 4? maybe that's why I'm pissed about anthrax, its not the band themselves, but a band that shit being put over say, pantera or testament. wtf. sure you'd argue differently though.

Star scriem I hear ya, I’d never say Anthrax is better than Pantera or Testament, I’m just predicting the path a lot people take when getting into thrash and heavier stuff. Thrash was my doorway into metal, and I still got a lot of love for Anthrax. Scott Ian is a cool fuckin dude in all his interviews, and I got to crush Joey Belladonna in a Halo 2 LAN party once lolol. He was a chill ass cool guy, though so I can’t say anything bad, and Attack of the Killer B’s is a fun album

It's not your fault, and I'm not trying to discredit or take away any of your love (even though I feel like theirs better bands that could use your money on cd's or word by mouth cred) just sayin their singer, get rid of the dude, he's just not a good metal voice, like I thought dave mustaine sucked as a metal singer but then again he doesn't sound like my next door neighbor..i like your comment but you danced around that lol cmon, I like babymetal and ill admit its kindaaaaaaaa...yeah could you atleast admit that the singing isn't ..uhh...for everyone? I've found it fascinating watching your journey through metal. Many of your comments and critiques are spot on. It is interesting that you are coming at it through the lens of more contemporary hip-hop and soul/groove music. Original "metal" artists like Black Sabbath actually came from primarily black music i.e. basic rock n' roll. When metal lost much of it's "groove" is after large elements of hardcore punk music got grafted into a riff structure. A lot of the groove or beat - the space between music - got foregone in favor of pure aggression when this happened for better or worse.

I've heard someone say that metal is white boy blues. Just like the blues came out of the culture of the south for black folks, metal has come out of the culture of 'white trash' dudes... a way of expressing how they feel, just like the blues and eventually hip hop.

Moshing is organised chaos. There is almost always some unspoken rules between the participants. If someone falls to the ground people instantly pic you up. No one will throw you to ground intentionalty, but people be drunk so not a guarantee. Moshing is kinda like stomping, wilding out within a proximity with different people. You are mostly focused on the artist playing, and the music, so it is not like gladiator. Lastly, a mosh seems tougher than it is, very easy to join and escape well and sound. Peace.

Anthrax is a lot to absorb. They hook you in with these killer riffs, then smash you in the face with a bunch of dissonance and screaming. My biggest complaint is that Anthrax has consistently raised awareness of real societal issues that we need to address as a country and world (moreso than your typical bands) - but if you don't have the lyrics handy, you'll miss the message. Either way, God bless the both of you. You are bridging a gap in a fun way and I love your channel! Keep up the good work!

I just discovered you guys and I can appreciate your open mindedness, respect your opinions, and see you can recognize skill and musicality (especially in the metal genre). You started to come around to this song towards the end. You started to get it, but should also realize this song is very tongue in cheek as well. This song is classic Anthrax. It’s exactly what thrash metal is. With their roots in punk rock and heavy metal Caught in a Mosh is the culmination of their influences and raw thrash metal at its core.

Man. I was so into that movement! I was a guitarist for a thrash metal band in the 80's and tried into the 90's. That was hard times. In short we owned it. It was an extension of punk and metal. We as a collective came together. Then Grunge happened. Well, some of us moved over there or not. Got to see Anthrax in 1996 and was literally caught in a mosh. So much so I was pushed toward the stage. My best friend was with me. He was passed out!!!!! The crowd and I still got him up front enough to touch the stage and High five Scott Ian. We got him out of the mosh was a major thing. Still one of the best concerts I've ever been too. Long live Anthrax and thank you guys for this review!!

There's different types of pits and different types of moshers for sure, but I'd say the classic pit is where you just rock out, headbang, bounce around, and go crazy. There's pushing and shoving of each other as you bounce around. It can certainly be quite rough, but it's more like having a friendly grappling or football match with a friend than an actual brawl. At least it should be. Standard mosh pit code is to immediately pick someone up and make sure they are alright if he or she falls down. I don't go to many concerts these days, but I've never seen someone fall and not have multiple people immediately rush to pick him or her up. Sometimes you get an asshole in there that takes things too far, and that's how someone could easily get hurt. Also, if you're part of the crowd on the perimeter of the pit, you need to be on your guard to brace yourself in case someone gets pushed into you, and push them back into the pit. Someone unfamiliar with pits may not realized this and that's another way someone could get hurt. I've participated in quite a few in my time, and I would say the purpose is to just loose yourself in the music and adrenaline in a pretty primitive and tribal fashion with others.

My first experience in a mosh pit was at a Dio/Megadeth concert back in like '88 or maybe '87. Was the 'Dream Evil/So far so go so what' era of those two bands. I was lucky enough to be on the ring and not on the inside.. so yes.. I learned real fast to brace myself so those inside could bounce off of me and not knock me down in the process. Was a quick learning experience.. mostly for personal safety lol.

Moshing is a very carnal and tribal experience. It is a bit visceral in a way. It’s really not as brutal or dangerous as it sounds most of the time. The people in the pit usually try to keep each other standing. When someone trips and falls and people don’t see is usually how people get hurt. It is very much part of the metal subculture.

hi guys, first of all I recently started watching your videos, I love what you guys do! it's just great! I wanted to answer your Question about what you heard on the song "Raining Blood" and in this one "Caught in a Mosh" the fast tempo chaotic beat you hear is Actually call a "Skank beat" it got started in the early 70's and 80's in Europe's Punk scene. it was later added to the Metal sound creating the Sub Genre "Thrash" Metal" Bands Like Slayer,Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax are consider "Thrash Metal ". "Thrash Metal" bands normally don't play "Blast beats"(there are 1 or 2 exceptions) you can say it's the Blast beat predecessor. The "Skank beat" it's basically a simple 4 quarters notes on the high hats, with kick drum on 1 and 3 the snare on 2 and 4 play at a fast tempo (if you play it really slow it sounds like a simple 1,2,3,4 beat) although there are variations to that beat. but that is the traditional "Skank beat " The "Blast beat" got started in Europe as well in the early 80's. but it wasn't until the "Blast beat"made it's way to the Usa in the early 90's that it really started to take the form that we hear today. There are 4 different variations of the "Blast beat" (but there are more being created over time) The traditional "Blast beat" it's pretty much the same as a "Skank beat " but play at a ridiculously fast tempo. It's normally use in "Death Metal", "Black Metal", sometimes in "Power Metal" but rarely you hear it in "Thrash Metal" (i know for fact that "Raining Blood " does not have a "Blast beat"). Anthrax has 1 or 2 "Blast Beats" in some of their songs. Take it from someone who's a fan of these bands,Loves Metal,Music in General and has being playing drums for 12 years. Anyway, I hope that answers your question guys, now I will continue watching your videos. while I'm at it, I'll make a suggestion. could you please do "Eagle Fly Free" by Helloween. it's a German Power Metal band. (I think it would be the first Power Metal song you guys Analyze, but i could be wrong). thank you so much!

Moshing is part of metal. There is also a brotherhood about it with unwritten rules of the mosh or at least there was. If someone gets knocked down you help them up, if some is hurt you help them out and at the end you shake hands and tell them good job. Overall it is a Metal thing and it should be expected. As being an older Metal head I have realized rules have changed(looking at you crowd killers) but it should be back to basics and make it about beating each other but also respecting each other.

Hypothetically, people shouldn't really be getting hurt moshing at a metal concert. There are unwritten rules of mosh pits, which include only pushing/shoving and not punching or kicking. You are also supposed to help people up when they fall on the ground. Of course there are always idiots who come into the pit trying to hurt people, but usually there are people there to set them straight. Moshing at hardcore/punk concerts can be a different animal though. You'll see a lot of people throwing limbs wildly there. I haven't personally spent a lot of time in the pit, but I think it is similar to why people like boxing, MMA, football, etc. It is a great way to relieve stress and expel energy and people usually feel like part of a community where everyone is moshing together. It really is the opposite of trying to hurt anyone. Everyone is just trying to have a good time and enjoy the music.

I think we will probably have to be patient. They are just now getting to the classic bands and it will probably be a while before they get into more modern European bands, if they ever do. I know people have suggested Amon Amarth, Soilwork, Insomnium, and many others in previous videos. I think it would be cool to see them react to those bands, but I also recognize metal is generally something that takes a while to acquire a taste for, and I would rather not rush them into heavier music, because they might write it off and be less likely to check out more cool shit.

I could see certain Soilwork tracks actually being good metal introductions for them. Something like "Two Lives Worth of Reckoning" that is very groovy and melodic. Plus it has the contrast of clean and harsh vocals to sort of ease someone into harsh vocals. Soilwork's "Natural Born Chaos" album was actually one of the main albums that eased me into harsh vocals since when I first got into metal I hated them (harsh vocals not Soilwork).

Moshing isn't about hurting others, it's getting out aggression in in the funnest way possible to the music. There is often bad apples in the crowd who are being reckless, but they are often taken care of by either security or the members of the mosh pit. Also you have to check out stuff from Anthax's newest album "For All Kings" it's completely different from their older stuff. My favorite is "Blood Eagle Wings".

Yeah this. A good decade of moshing prepped me for playing roller derby. There are rules of behavior (ish) and people slamming into you from every which way, but there is a rhythm and a flow. Though I will say that every pit (and every band's pit) is different. Some of the most fun I've had was in a flogging molly pit, where one moment we were slamming it in a friendly manner, then the next we were throwing people up in the air and doing a jig when the song changed. So damn fun. On the other hand, I'm not going to jump into a Slayer pit. Those get really unfriendly.

Gentlemen, it is totally the culture of metal. If I saw anyone in the moshpit fuck with you guys in the wrong way I would be giving those motherfuckers the people's elbow! Seriously though, it is just for fun, moshpits are fun. I've been there, had a good time, and if someone steps out of line in the pit usually the rest of "the pit" will take care of it. So "the pit" regulates itself. Unspoken rules that transcend race, nationality, creed, age, color, etc. Just "be cool". Now do some Dream Theater - "Dance of Eternity" (This could/would be your first progressive metal instrumental! PLEASE! YOU will be blown away bro!)

There is something self destructing-ly gratifying about moshing. A release of suppressed emotion that comes out almost naturally when the groove of a live band is in the pocket, and your emotions are peaked. The song touches a primal part of you that almost wants to hurt...idk if that helps, but that's what it feels like. At least to me. And in turn, no one is actually trying to hurt you, but it doesn't look like that from outside. You really should try it to know, But you don't have to mosh at a show. No one will make you. But it's really thrilling. When I go to shows, sometimes I just want to observe the band, but I know that there are a few songs I HAVE to make my way to "the pit" for. Some songs I want to "feel" more than hear. Thank you for the awesome content, I love it!

@Lost in Vegas. Anthrax is a complicated metal band. They have a lot of Punk genre mixed into their music. Better choices for you to try for Anthrax would be Time or Belly of the Beast. As for your questions about Mosh Pits. Well mosh pits have changed over the years. Back in the late 80s early 90s they (depending on the band) could be some of the most violent things you have ever seen, insert any slayer mosh pit, to just running around in a big circle over and over. Mosh pits are more about releasing pent up aggression and adrenaline. At a Slayer concert you might get punched square in the face seeing stars, but the guy who just tried to knock you out would also be the guy helping you up and out of the pit if needed. Now at a Metallica concert (pre-Black album), the mosh pits were mainly just people slamming their bodies into each other. It was far tamer for "slower" metal bands in the pit than the "heavier". The intentions of people in each mosh pit was mainly to blow off steam or just knock someone out in order to make themselves feel better about having a rough day, week, year, or just life in general. Metal moreso than any other style of music is about expressing yourself without any care in the world about what others think. As for recommendations for you to listen to. Nightwish- pretty much anything. They are a Finnish Melodic Metal band with great story telling and vocals. Baby Metal- Road to Resistance. They are theatrical to some degree (Japanese lyrics only) one of the best drummers I have ever seen. Not real popular here in the states and a-lot of metalheads cringe when they see them but Rob Halford of Judas Priest thinks they are awesome and so do I. They are a manufacture band though which throws a-lot of people off. Dio- Holy Diver or pretty much anything by him. Glen Danzig- Mother or for something realllllly creative (no lyrics though) anything from the Black Aria album. Metallica- One, Harvester of Sorrows, Ride the Lightning. Megadeth- Tornado of Souls, Peace Sells... (this is pretty much their mostly popular song and one of their best.) For something a bit more fun check out Alestorm- Drink or Korpiklaani- Vodka definately some intresting stuff you would never expect in metal hehe

People are making the mistake of recommending chaotic songs. Frantic vocals and drums aren't going to appeal to some one just getting into the genre. As far as the Slayer review you did, i personally love the Reign In Blood album.. but its certainly not something i would recommend to someone who is just getting into metal. I think a good review that might change your mind on the band would be SLAYER - SEASONS IN THE ABYSS . Theres a clearer song structure, and it doesn't have the same chaotic vocals as anything off the Reign In Blood album. It also has the transitions you seem to enjoy.

Your comments at 6:51 are on point. Joey - the vocalist was originally just singing in a Journey cover band and was introduced to the rest of the band as a random suggestion. The band emphasized the gang/punk chant vocals and adding Joey (after other failed attempts of a lead vocalist) was perfect in the most odd way. Anthrax, at this time, showed their punk influenced heavily and bringing in a dude who was singing like Steve Perry was just weird, but perfect in its own way. Definitely enjoy your vids and know that much of metal is "learning" to like it and it's taking me back as to how this stuff hit me as a kid in the 80's.

The big attraction to a mosh pit for me is that it’s a great stress relief. Get in, shove each other around, sometimes shit happens and you catch an elbow, knee or fist. And when you get knocked down, some folks stop and help you up, shake hands, and go back to it. And yes, it’s very much a part of the culture of metal. By far some of the greatest fun I’ve had at metal shows is in the pit, and even in a wall of death.

Concerts are like theme parks and Mosh Pits are like roller-coasters. There are different kinds (standard mosh, circle pit, wall of death, etc.) all with different levels of intensity. When you go to a concert you don't have to participate in a mosh just like you don't have to go on a roller-coaster when visiting a theme park. But, everyone knows where the most diehard fans and thrillseeker's alike will reside. Both Mosh-pits and roller-coasters provide the participant with a unique range of emotions; excitement, fear, joy - experienced separately and all at once. Both are super fun and super-dangerous ! It's extremely stimulating and certainly not for everyone.

This song is a moshing anthem for sure, it's killer in a live setting. Out of The Big Four, Anthrax are like the partying goof-balls of the four; they would go out in really colorful clothing for instance instead of wearing all black or just dark colors in general, so your high-school comment was kind of right on. Crazy party atmosphere. Also, if you sped the verse drumming up a lot more than it is, it would be a blast beat. As it sits, it is very fast yes, but it's basically a 4/4 beat played at double speed or faster (it's called The Skank Beat), which as you've noticed, is popular with Thrash Metal. A blast beat is a 4/4 beat, 4 or 5 times as fast. At first I was more used to mid-paced rhythms too, but the more I listened to the faster shit, the more I liked and understood it. You start hearing blast beats though, when you get into the more extreme sub-genres like Death Metal or Black Metal for example. Also, with how fast and heavy the verses are, the singer is not trying to be in tune until the chorus kicks in; he's just yelling at you, hyping you up. Hell I didn't like the singers for Anthrax or Slayer at first listen, but they have a way of growing on you. Like a fungus. \,,/

Exactly! You hit it spot on. Was hard for me to explain. Thrash Metal is my favorite genre of music from my teenage and young adult years. And I still keep up with the M's.. Metallica & Megadeth. Saw Megadeth for their Dystopia tour. Anyway, yes, I have great memories of these times, but I do actually like this song! I was totally singing along! Yes, Anthrax were totally a goofball party band! For the most part. ;-)

And I basically just told them the same thing about the blast beat without having noticed that you'd already explained it, but with over 2000 comments, how do you notice that? You've got it pretty spot on. I don't consider the drumming in this much of a blast beat, if at all--the fast tempo is all in the snare. Blast beats to me come much more out of the tempo hammering on the toms in tandem with the double bass, like the video of Napalm Death I linked to, or in 90s death metal (I'm thinking Cannibal Corpse's "Hammer Smashed Face"). It's that high-tempo mid-to-low-range intensity that gives it the "blast" of its name.

One of my favorite things I've seen in a moshpit is when you got a young kid, probably 12-13 yrs old, standing at the edge of the pit, a lil fear in their eyes, wanting to step in but hesitant, until a couple guys put their arms around that kid, and escort him into the pit. You see the excitement in his eyes. And others in the pit run up to give the kid a "bump" or even just a high 5, letting him know that he belongs, that he's "one of us" now...

A mosh pit is like a strange family. You knock the shit outta one another and vent your frustrations. If someone falls, you lend them a hand and pick them back up. In the end, everyone in there is trying to have fun. Not hurt one another. I've seen entire pits stop to make sure someone that fell gets back to their feet before serious damage is done. It's a family. It's a brotherhood.

Moshing is voluntary. There are areas for the pits and areas to just observe the show. When you are in the pit you are a brother (or sister). There is no color, no race, just working out your aggressions in one of the most fun ways possible.

Fuck yeah, I just love noticing a moshpit a few rows ahead of me and seeing people slowly crawl through the crowd to get a part of the mosh, we all just want to let it all out amongst fellow fans! It looks pretty violent from the outside but it's just people jumping and pushing each other around, there's a few dickheads that put their arms out and try to hurt people while doing it but they're often shunned by others, sometimes even thrown out of the pit if it's a great one! People are also quick to stop fucking around and immediately pick up anyone that fell down in a moshpit, it's pretty fun seing 5/10 scary dudes stop enjoying themselves to care for their fellow fans, I've had a lot of misconceptions corrected after my first moshpit! If you get further, there's a few other flavors of pits, circle pit where people form an empty circle in a crowd and then all run to the center on cue, running circle pits where it's basically a standard mosh while running around a huge circle, and my favorite, the wall of death, where the crowd splits into two parts that run into each other. I hadn't moshed in a few years but I got back into it this summer at a festival and I realized how much I missed it, it's really one of the best ways to enjoy yourself and feel the energy of the music in a crowd!

Moshing was derived from slam dancing, which came from hardcore punk. In the 70s, punk rockers pogoed, which is jumping up and down and was relatively benign except when people would accidentally fall on each other. Then, when the beat got faster, people started adding the horizontal element of violently slamming into one another, which was originally known as the HB strut, since it was started in Huntington Beach among the more aggressive hardcore punks of the early 80s, then went all over the United States. In the mid-80s, the crossover band Stormtroopers of Death started calling it "moshing", and it was then co-opted by the metal scene. The different types of moshing or slamming varied depending on the city or region, with New Yorkers particularly fond of the circle pit, and people on the West Coast fond of a more chaotic type of dance that had no formation. In Boston, they had the pig pile, where people literally piled on top of each other.

not everybody gets the groove right away. anthrax makes complicated music, and it is not friendly to casual listeners. it is worth multiple listenings to understand the beat. they are the masters of the off beat. that's what makes them stand out.

Anthrax is thrash metal, which is metal crossed with punk rock. The key thing is them using a lot of sharp keys, which you only ever see in some older classical music outside of metal. He's not off key, he's just singing a weird key with an extra sharp. It's intentionally jarring. So is the constant switching up the beat without ever really sticking with one groove. It's music for being pissed off to. Moshing happens at almost all metal shows, but it's only in one area in the crowd, you don't have to be in it. It's raging and flailing while spinning in a big circle, so you're likely to take some hits. But anybody being intentionally violent is going to get targeted and removed right quick, anybody who falls will find multiple pairs of hands picking them back up before they get trampled - there's a lot of etiquette into keeping the mosh going without allowing any tragic situations. PS: fun fact, Anthrax did a rap song one time, you'll love this (actually you'll hate it but it's funny). Checkitout: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZqrlaVqp7x6b5o

dude, anthrax is trash, blaming their singers shitty singing on "its a sharp key" is baloney. not only does anthrax's singer suck, but his lyrics too. their band is not good either. vh1 made them popular, with scott ian being in every interview they did during the early 2000's. it was soo hard for them to get popular (straight out of their mouths) until then, and id argue it was soo hard for them to get popular, sell records because the public, and metal heads deemed anthrax shit. their shit, you blast that shit in your car, I'm laughing and wandering why your not jamming something better ie old metallica, megadeth, pantera, fckn anything but anthrax. maybe its just the singer, he sounds fucking stupid.

You can argue that punk wasn't the primary influence in the formation of Thrash, but it's definitely in there. You are right about Crossover Thrash though, as more of a straight up melding of Thrash Metal and Hardcore Punk, but there was already a bit of punk in thrash to begin with. That and you can't just ignore how individual artists and bands bring their own influences, regardless of what genre they are labeled as. Songs like this, and other earlier Anthrax and Slayer, you can really hear more of that punk influence.

El Bruce: Sorry, but he is off-key. You can make all the excuses in the world, but inserting an unnecessary sharp when it's clearly jarring is off-key. This is a great mosh track but a horribly sung one. Want to hear an ever more horribly sung track? Listen to "I am the law." Belladonna simply hadn't matured as a singer and it took him a long time (until Worship music) to sing in key and sing really well. IMO, Worship Music is his best vocal performance on an Anthrax record till date.

I have been binge watching your videos for the past week or so and I have to say that you two have decided to fall down a rabbit hole I've been falling down for over 30 years. I still haven't hit bottom. I appreciate your honesty in your reactions. I also definitely think that the experience of jumping in head first without any guidance is educational. Thoroughly enjoying being witness to your journey. Also started watching your hip hop stuff since I haven't really listened since Jay Z's Black album.... been out of touch I guess. Now with all that being said, Why hasn't anyone suggested anything from Anthrax's Sound of White Noise? Hy Pro Glo, Potter's Field, Only, or even Black Lodge.... That is I think Anthrax's seminal album.
