Woohoo! Thanks so much Nick, I've wanted to do this one for a while. You are right, I picked more of the deep cuts because, as usual, those to me are better than the popular ones. I never liked Anthrax until their State of Euphoria album. They had a commercial on MTV promoting their tour, and they played probably 10 seconds or so of a song called Now It's Dark. It's an awesome riff, I went out and bought the cassette tape immediately and fell in love with it! I got to see them on the Persistence of Time tour with Primus and Public Enemy. They performed together as well. Awesome concert! The music with John Bush is different for sure but I love it just as much as the music with Joey Belladonna. Some of it is definitely slower, but more refined in a way. Joey is back with the band and has been for some time now. I agree with you, And Justice For All is my favorite Metallica album as well (aside from the missing bass). I was excited when Black came out, but I only ended up liking about half of it. I bought Load and liked it even less and I gave up. Megadeth is ok, Peace Sells is probably my favorite of the albums I've heard. I just don't care for Dave Mustaine as a person so it makes it difficult for me to get into their music. Thanks also for throwing in Madhouse - it was good to hear it again as it's not one of my go-to songs. It reminded me how good it was!! Thanks so much Nick, this was fun and I'm so happy you enjoyed it!

I honestly think it was a great selection of songs but a bit "same-ish". It could've been more varied in tempos etc. It could've been nice with one song per album too. Or a complete album marathon. This marathon totally misses the early stuff, the groovy stuff and the later stuff. And it misses the collab with Public Enemy. I know, all of this can't be done in one sitting. So maybe a second marathon with more variation in types of songs would be nice and appropriate? 🙂👍

It's always great to see someone get into one of my favorite bands. My favorite of the Big 4. In 1985 I was in California but thrash hadn't hit there yet. Hair metal ruled the day. My friend back home in Michigan had seen Ozzy in concert and he was super excited about the opening band, Metallica. When I first heard Ride the Lightning I was blown away. Of course, at the time, Metallica only had two albums and I needed more. Back in Cali I went to the local music shop and the knew of Metallica of course and he turned me on to another band, Anthrax. Spreading the Disease became my favorite album. I just connected with Anthrax's music. So now I had a second thrash band to love. At the height of their popularity though Joey leaves and it all goes into chaos for a couple of decades. I loved John Bush, knew of him from his band Armored Saint, but during his time in the band they had problems. After Dan Spitz left the band it was revolving guitar players coming and going. Some albums have one guitarist on album but then not on tour. They had guest guitarist, friends, like Dime Bag Darrell play on some songs. They never became super popular like Metallica, no one did, and just kept plugging away and making albums. They toured when they could. They had some bad management and record label problems too. Joey finally came back and they have put out two phenomenal albums since then and toured a lot. I've seen them three times. Once for each album and last year for the fortieth anniversary of Spreading the Disease album. They still sound incredible.

I got to see Anthrax twice in 1991 with Joey Belladonna on vocals. First show in Feb 1991 was Iron Maiden and Anthrax. This was the" No Prayer For the Dying" tour. Then later in June 1991, Anthrax played with Megadeth and Slayer. This was the Clash of the Titans tour where each band took turns headlining. Also opening for them was a new band called Alice In Chains. The pit for this concert was brutal, lol.

Sounds like a good show! I actually saw them open up for Black Sabbath in 1986! W.A.S.P. was supposed to be there as well but cancelled - I was mostly there for them, but I was impressed by Anthrax! Was a fan after that. Saw them again in 1988 with Exodus and Celtic Frost. Good times.

I just loved watching this reaction! #Anthrax are a wonderful band. Persistence of Time has always been my.fave album of theirs - followed by Among the Living. Their combination of punk rhythms and jagged guitars always won me over. Charlie Benante is THE best thrash drummer, maybe along with Gar Samuelson, Nick Menza and Portnoy and Lombardo... Joey's vocals always gave them a classic rock melodic sense. That's why they stood out to me. Better melodies than Metallica. The best rhythmic band and tons of attitude. And fun!

I've been a fan since their debut album "Fistful of Metal" with Neil Turbin on vocals and Dan Lilker on Bass (who became Bassist of "Nuclear Assault" and Grindcore band "Brutal Truth"). Which I heard on a all Metal program called "The Mighty Metal/kMETAL Shop" on LA's KMET 94.7 FM in 1984. But when Joey Belladonna joined, they went head first into the Thrash sound, with that "NYC Punk" attitude. I think the sound you hear Nick, is drummer Charlie Benante's "punk" influences and what he was creating as an early Thrash Metal pioneer, with a bit more technicality. Not to disparage Lars Ulrich of Metallica, he had the timing and he could get heavy/aggressive (Fight Fire with Fire, Damage Inc., Battery, Shortest Straw, Dyers Eve), but Charlie had the foot control and again, could be much more technical. The sound production of the 1st half of their career sadly is what was happening to a LOT of Thrash albums, VERY thin sounding and not brining-up the Bass and a higher volume. I think this was due to Engineers who only worked with Metal bands, and not having the vast knowledge of a wider range of music production, so that they could bring up the levels and "space" for each instrument. Being an Anthrax fan (and when my collection started to explode, as I still have Lp's of most of the Thrash bands I was into, until "CD's" took over, and most stopped releasing Vinyl), I was really baffled why Joey Belladonna left. But I also started to see much later how "fans" (Newer?) did not like Joey's "melodic" type vocals going along with the aggressive Thrash. Maybe due to the Grunge scene, and Metalheads began to diss the more melodic vocalists in that scene, but there was such a mix of vocals back then, it didn't make sense to me. Saying that, when "John Bush" joined, and the music changed into something more direct and straight-forward (kind-of that "Aggro" or what they call now "Groove Metal" sound), I didn't like it. I was a John Bush "fan" with his original band from LA *Armored Saint* which was a straight-forward "Heavy Metal" band, that sound before Glam took over in LA (like "Savatage" from Florida). This is where I lost interest in the band, just like Metallica, I just didn't go for the new direction and I pursued other Thrash bands that were "progressing" the sound, and were more obscure/underground (including the "Bay Area Thrash scene"). Megadeth seemed to be the only band of the Big 4 that I still enjoyed, even though personally, "Cryptic Writings" and "Risk" were hugely disappointing. But I think Megadeth really came back strong after "United Abominations" (2007), better production while maintaining the heaviness/aggression. John Bush would later re-start Armored Saint and they sounded even better! This was the time I was working at Tower Records, and a lot of the Metal I was into, we weren't really receiving the contemporary bands I was getting into (except a few Prog Metal bands including the more extreme Opeth & Meshuggah to my surprise). But with that, I never sat down to listen to the era without "Dan Spitz", he was a phenomenal Lead Guitarist, and I _just_ read that he left _"to pursue a career in luxury Swiss watchmaking, attending the Swiss watchmaking school WOSTEP on a full scholarship. He was certified a Mechanical Complications Specialist, earning Swiss degrees in micro-mechanical engineering, and opened his own luxury watch service."_ This later era with Joey seems to have gone back to their roots and have been doing very well like their hey-day, so I'll have to checkout those 2 albums. But this was a fine marathon, and I actually enjoyed "Potters Field" and especially "Taking the Music Back". The others are true classics, but "Time" really surprised me when it was released, it was pretty heavy back then, it was VERY technical, and I was really getting into the more complex bands. Many of us would have soo many tracks to request from the classic tracks to deeper cuts. But Anthrax is well deserved to be in the Big 4, though that can be contentious, my argument would be that they have inspired/influenced MANY of the bands that took-on the older sound of Thrash and brought it back with a contemporary spin, some raw, some polished, but it created a resurgence in Thrash Metal from 2000 on (including niche' subgenres). . . . . . and I have YET to see Anthrax 🙁. - Thanks Lee, even though we may disagree about Mustaine (but agree about Metallica), this was great to get Nick into more Anthrax and discovering what he had missed. Great reaction Nick \m/. For the bands I was getting into in the late 80's thru 1995 . . . kzbin.info/aero/PL2DU3TBNutEdtiYql5HxhzIxzuFIPcXS9 \m/

So glad you ended up enjoying the tracks from John Bush. I remember hearing "Only" right after the album was released and it sounded extremely commercial. I was so mad! It eventually grew on me and I'm glad it did, there are some phenomenal songs with John Bush for sure. And even though they had a couple of commercial sounding songs, they were still heavy and sounded great! I have to admit, after Joey came back it was hard for me to enjoy their new music. Some of it's ok, I'm not sure if it's because he can't sing like he used to or if the writing has changed but I'm just not too impressed. I hope you get to see them live at some point, they were fantastic when I saw them on the Persistence of Time tour. The thing about Anthrax is that they are a "fun" band. Every time I've seen them interviewed or watched their live shows, they are always just enjoying themselves. I really respect that.

Early Anthrax, Metallica and Helloween were speed metal bands in their time, even before being called thrash metal or speed thrash bands. The fast pace was essential, the heavy and power riffs came later. :)

Would have been nice to have something off the 1st Anthrax album "Fistful of Metal", when Neil Turbin was singing for them, for some contrast with the later chugging songs. "Metal Thrashing Mad" is a great song off that.

Anthrax have an incredible knack of being able to write incredibly catchy riffs and hooks while never comprising on the heaviness. They're definitely the most "thrashy" of the big 4 thrash bands. I pretty much stopped listening to new metal after Metallica's Black Album came out so I've never actually listened to anything off The Sound Of White Noise album before (besides the single, Only), but that intro was 100% inspired by Nine Inch Nails. It was almost identical to the stuff NIN were doing on their The Downward Spiral album.

The drummer (Charlie Benante) has always been the main songwriter on the band and is responsible of most of their memorable guitar riffs. Another fun fact: Metallica asked John Bush to be their lead singer in the beginning of their career but he declined the offer. It's fun to think how they would've sounded like with him on the vocals.

State of Euphoria should be way more liked than it is. I know it was the pinnacle of the band's goofy and cartoon phase, but the whole album is great. It 's too bad that everyone in the band has said it's their least liked album. There are a lot of songs from this one I'd like to see live.
