But how can you explain the difference between urban anthropology (or any “branch” of anthropology who study a occidental social fact) and urban sociology (for exemple) ? As a sociology student I have been confronted to some case where the old paradigm (anthropology studies foreign cultures and sociology studies occidental culture) wasn’t been applied (as this course of urban anthropology where the teachers has talked about our city model)

I’m an anthropology undergrad student, and this question pops up occasionally either by people asking me or just me thinking about it. While I like how you answered it i still don’t find this answer satisfying. It makes sense if we’re talking about the two disciplines historically but wouldn’t you say that currently they’re much more similar and they overlap so much? People usually answer this question by saying “anthropology is qualitative, sociology is quantitative”, but that’s not the case anymore, sociologists use ethnography and more quantitative methods nowadays, and anthropologists pretty much abandoned the old questions and the “primitive vs civilized” framework and sometimes borrow theoretical frameworks from sociology. So is there really a difference between them besides the intellectual history?

@Veronica Grave I disagree. The difference between cultural anthropology and sociology the name is a give away. One focuses on culture and one focuses on society. Culture is what is done on the individual level and society is done at the institutional level. So if you wanted to study education for example their is a much broader educational sociology for proof the length of the wikiedpai page en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociology_of_education en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Educational_anthropology#:~:text=Educational%20anthropologists%20try%20to%20focus,communities%20within%20large%20nation%20states. than anthropology. @@steinmark27 I graduated with my BA in Sociology this June. I would still like to go back for Anthropology though. But Sociology is so broad it can be take you into different work fields. I think the biggest factors for deciding were what work career I wanted and if I would go back for my masters for the job/intrest.

Not bad, but the analysis misses Immanuel Wallerstein’s observation that sociologists studied societies embedded in nation-states that collected large quantities of census, economic and other numerical data; traditional civilizations in the Middle East, South and East Asia offered a wealth of art, architecture and written materials accessible only those with deep knowledge of classical as well as modern languages; anthropologists got the “primitive,” a.k.a. preliterate, pre-state rest of the world.
