In Nekoma, North Dakota, an ominous pyramid structure stands deserted. Once the site of a massively expensive Soviet safeguard complex, the pyramid remains as a chilling monument to nuclear anxieties during the Cold War.

Crazy to think my parents lived almost their entire lives with nuclear war in the back of their minds everyday. I'm glad I was born when I was. Perspective is important.

I worked in Titan II missile silos, in the late 70's, and they were beyond usefulness then. I Told my commanding officers how I felt about it too! The sites were literally falling apart! (I found, and pushed for a transfer, for me and 2 others that hated that place as much as I did!) Approximately 1 and 1/2 to 2 years later, they started decommissioning the sites! True story!

Sounds to me like it should’ve been kept operational and up-to-date all along with the advancements in technology it’s still a viable deterrent especially if you updated with today’s technology

Too costly. Cheaper to abandon the site. Plus, more of our allies developed nuclear capabilities. We have numerous top secret advancements now anyways.

It was too good. This is why it was shut down because it scared the crap out of the Russians and the thought was that it would instigate a war.

Most bizarre. Not one mention of the ABM treaty. That is what ended the pursuit of systems like this.

i watched a recent video about north Korea and explaining that they're yet again threatening to bomb the west. i was then, thinking about how to defend from nuclear attacks? if a nation isn't seeking total neutrality by building huge bunkers, is it even possible to defend from nuclear missiles. great upload!

I think this is the one a friend of mine bought to turn into kind of an ...art bunker? Part of it, anyway. Unless there are multiple gigantic concrete pyramid missile bases in North Dakota.

Contrary to what the narrator said, the US never walks away from an effective weapon system due to a change in political climate. that means one of two things: Either the US came up with something better, obsoleting the Safeguard system, or it didn't work. I"m pretty sure it worked.
