I grew up in North London in the seventies my school was 65% Black and Asian, with us "whites" being the minority, my best friend back in the day was from India, he was a Sikh, his father owned a newsagents from where I did a morning paper round with his son, Akir. I am now 66 years old and I can still as clear as day remember sitting on the floor of their living room and having my first taste of spicy food with Akir, and his father along with his mother and his sisters, his father blessed his family (in English) for their life in England. There was no hatred, I was accepted into their family despite my "colonial" heritage because I was a friend of Akir.

According to their research, the quote first came into public consciousness in a 1956 newspaper article about the actor Yul Brynner. He said it was the best advice he had ever been given.
