At least such people are better who ask for dowry. You have a chance to reject them and save yourself. But in india 90% of upper middle class family don't ask straightaway. They expect the girl will get everything not only when she's married but lifelong, at every occasion, every festival, every auspicious or inauspicious thing happening at her inlaws place. If you live in India, you know the condition of women, dowry continues to flourish, sexism that women face at work, at home, in social gatherings. There is only about 20% of female workforce in India, and the society will still tell me to listen to my in-laws when they say quit your job and focus on your home. If I haven't taken my husband's surname everyone asks me why I did not. No one ever wonders why girls are expected to give up their identity and take husband's !!! The country is called mother India because all we do is take from her, if it was called father India than it would have a say.

Girls get really ask for a decent place for a healthy environment for themselves and the family. A household where elders understand that a new mother needs rest during the day or needs more nutrition and support in housework will never ask for extra stuff. Women and men both need family support . But the elders being sick themselves don't allow son to keep a house helper to support when they can't. How would the daughter in-law be expected to take care of five six people herself. This is injustice .

hmmmmm..... i get that. Some people are just... you know... stubborn. They do know about it, but still take the dowry. But then again, i guess the ads are not the ones to be blamed. The marriage you attended asked for dowry, but there may be families that did watch the add (or maybe didn't), and did not ask for it. I know that this "pratha" of dowry still exists, but atleast these ads showing this is wrong are better than nothing. All in all, like i know we cannot interfere in others family, but if something like dowry happens to be in the giving or the receiving side of our own home, then we can meddle in between to stop such a thing from happening so.

Just last month my widow friend's daughter (by profession engineer) got married and my friend gave her 50 tola gold full furniture, car, electric appliances and loads of gift to the groom and his family. When I asked her why she did so she replied I don't want my daughter to hear that his father is no more and has no brother that's why her mother didn't care. My colleague received offer from a 10th class passed girl who wanted sanskari and hard-working boy. He hadn't even seen or knew the name of the girl. But girls parents were pressing to make him marry her. They said they they would give 3 crore inr!! I thought he would have a heart attack. He declined the offer. And then girls parents start talking about offering PG seat. (We are doctors). He declined very rudely in a way that they wouldn't even dare to come near his panchayat. My point is, some times boys and even girls don't want dowry. But parents think if you didn't give/get dowry it's a shame!! So somehow somepeople end up with dowry, without actually wanting it. Then girls parents use it to their advantage. Dowry won't go away anytime sooner. Indian arranged marriage system is truly pathetic in every level.

You should think many parents who have two to three daughters in that case groom's family should reconsider about dwery or having less demand. Thirdly from bride side their choice are become so particular.they think groom should be well settled, own house and having a stable income in the age between 24 to 30 years.which is not possible in everyone's life.... what's u r opinion

Hi @Adel H....Just to Summarize, there is a concept/custom in India known as Arranged Marriage which is basically one kind of business agreement where girl's family usually search for a well settled(high earner) boy and boy's family usually search for a beautiful(great looking) girl in order to get them married with each other. Now when both families become agree to go ahead with the marriage proposal there comes another concept which is known as DOWRY. In this so called DOWRY concept , boy's family will either ask luxurious gifts (flat/gold/car) or equivalent amount of Cash or both in exchange of the girl's hand in marriage. In failure of providing those above mentioned items, most of the time the marriage get cancelled by boy's family. According to law, it is a criminal offence in India to encourage or follow the DOWRY system however still people follow the same. These ads were meant to create awareness amongst the people to stop following/encouraging this heinous custom.

The concept of a dowry shocked me the first time... and especially how others at a wedding talk about it like it was some sort of competition. @@alice.3509 You are welcome...sorry I was not aware about the fact you already have concepts about dowry system...yes I am agree with you regarding the fact that right now we can observe some changes in our society..one of the reason which I can think of that number of love marriages are becoming higher in compare to what we used to have 10 or 15 years ago...also young generations are becoming more aware about the negative impacts caused by this custom. However still it is not enough....this custom needs to eradicated completely for the sake of everyone especially girls. Hope with a combined effort we will be able to achieve the same in near future🙂
