Serotonin is that neurotransmitter jo ki essentially neuromodulator bhi hai which means that they indirectly influence the activities of post synaptic neuron. Now both SSRIs and SMS block karti hai serotonin ke reuptake ko but iske sath hi SMS change karti hai activity of post synaptic neurons ke receptors ( 5 HT receptors) so it modulates. Post synaptic neurons are those which are receiving serotonin through their receptors and how effective that will be uss pe serotonin modulator medicines works along with inhibiting reputake. So SMS are not only blocking the reuptake but they are also changing how receptors will work This is major difference. SMS are new generation medicine, and it seems that they have better tolerance of side effects as compared to SSRIs
