Both of those banjos were made for gut strings and sound best with them or the nylon replacement. I think the frets on the first one must have been replaced too. Enjoyed your playing.

I’m sure you’ll get something together. Meanwhile, it’s really like visiting with...!!your banjo-oldtime idol!! :) I say it that way cuz you don’t just live oldtime banjo, you live *oldtime*, just the way I’d imagine it. Or, your vids certainly convey that. The best!!

Thanks for sharing that. For folks who love their instruments, it’s a real treat to hear other people’s stories about the ones they cherish. Gorgeous banjos, but I’m also intrigued to know which ‘flavour’ of Linux you run? I used it extensively for years (in lots of different forms), but work requirements forced me back to Windows. Loved the principle of Linux, loved the creativity behind it...could NOT understand how it worked. I was always looking for the next best plug-and-play version.

Try Linux Mint (LMDE5). It is a great, easy-to use, operating system that just works. Highly recommend it.

I have a later model Weymann plectrum from the late 20s, uses the same style of laminated maple. Might be the loudest banjo I have. These Weymanns were made up north in Philadelphia and they made a lot of 5 strings out of the box unlike some other manufacturers up this way. I play mine in a Philadelphia Mummers string band, which is appropriate for the banjo, but Weymanns aren't really too common here. Most of my bandmates are playing Bacons, Paramounts and the other strange Philly-made banjo: the "Jany".

That was great!

Is there any sort of tone ring in that Weymann? Didn’t look like there was, but noticing how loud that thing is I just wanted to ask. If there isn’t one then that must be some DENSE maple!

No tone ring in that Weymann, just old choice maple neck rim.

Seems like a lot of us that are into banjos use Linux. I have been using the Linux operating system for years, too. I like the freedom Linux affords to the user. The newer versions of Linux are really easy to use. (Linux Mint, Manjaro, Ubuntu, etc)

I play banjo and use Linux. Cheers.

I stopped on your video. Because I just purchased a 1924 keystone way and tenor four string. I like the feel of the neck but I think the first five frets need to be redone seems to be muting out a little very fickle in that first position. Everything else rings fine. Pretty happy with it except for that I'd like to put a pickup in it I'm thinking about old school stick-ons cuz I like everything in that dimension. I like to mess with feedback and harmonics that's why I chose to start playing with a banjo.

Do you have nylons on both banjos? Also, what string sizes do you use?
@CliftonHicksbanjo5 жыл бұрын
I had medium steel on the Weymann and light nylons on the Luscomb. Currently playing a modern Pisgah with heavy gauge steel strings and am using medium-heavy nylons now.

I stopped by your video because I just bought a wayann tenor I'm thinking about changing out the tuning pegs to something a little more modern as far as functionality. However I'm working with the original ones sometimes they slip they need to be tightened a lot and my arthritic hands are a little taxed to turn those buggers. What size strings would you recommend on the on this kind of tenor and would you use nylon on these as well.

The video was great. I see you burned your right wrist putting wood in the stove. I was doing that, but lately I went to Menards and got two pairs of long leather gloves. Five bucks apiece. That stopped that....:)
