Here we have a pretty straightforward barrel key make for an English sideboard. Enjoy

The candle smoke it a great idea! I got to the point where it is springy, then didn’t know what to do next. I guess I’ll smoke it to see where it’s hitting. Thank you for sharing!

When I started at NASA I was a lowly C tech (later changed to numeric) and the first thing I was taught was filing. I moved to management 10 years later, and by that time I had a drawer full of different files, and I used everyone of them. Looks like you had the same education. Thanks Jason.

Thank you immensely for this video. I bought an antique English display cabinet at auction, not knowing it didn't have a key. My local locksmiths were quoting three times the amount paid for the unit so that wasn't happening. I had absolutely no luck finding a blank barrel key of the right size but a lucky eBay purchase seemed to roughly fit. After that a bit of candle work and needle-filing managed to turn the lock and opened the cabinet! I'd never have had the confidence to try it myself without first watching this vid! :D

Nice vid, and key making job, I have a bag of deep set locks but they just use the flat keys, and 3 levers, but there master keyed as well.

I just had to do 2 of these last week. Never get that kind of work but a former customer just popped up and suddenly had to 100 year old cabinets she couldn't find the keys for. I surprised to see that the blanks are not as prevalent as I thought they might be. One place wanted you to order 6 at a time. Then the predicament of should I spend this cash and make hardly anything but be ready for the next job like this? I ended up just getting a couple of blanks, 24B and 34B. Worked out well in this case though I will be on the lookout for antique tryout keys from now on.

Well shot and explained. I like how you showed how each step was done. My only big question is do you use a scented or unscented candle for the smoking? LOL
@selock5 жыл бұрын
Gantry unscented! Especially when taking to customers homes, don’t wanna introduce a strange odor in someone’s house so I always use unscented for this. I do however take great delight in customers reactions when I pull a file out and ask, in my most “religious” sounding voice, if they perchance (gotta say perchance) had a candle of theirs I could use for the upcoming ceremony.

Thanks for the training, my local locksmith said it was too expensive for them to file the keys, after about 6 months leaving the locks there, then they lost one out of 2 of the main door locks of the 140 year old safe. 😞

all my candles have LED flames, so that will not help. Great video, too bad China can't center a hole in a key
