They are exquisite boxes. I love seeing them so obviously cared for over the years.

The A team together again!!! There were few occupations considered appropriate for widowed women or spinsters. While wallpaper was available it was mostly for the properous household. I can only imagine what Hannah would think today of our love of collecting hat/band boxes. Good for you Hannah, what a fledging entrepreneur you were. Another woman who was ahead of her time.

So fun seeing those wallpaper boxes. I never paid much attention to them, but I did know about Hannah Davis and her boxes. Love old newspapers. Thanks for sharing.

You know when I see a new post pop up with "Ask Alice" my radar is up and I cannot wait to log onto the Anne Clay site and get relaxed and excited at the same time to learn about all the items in Alice's collection! These wall paper boxes are amazing! It is as if I can hear the train whistle begin to blow as the boxes are gathered and loaded onto the train or the buggy that is about to depart the station. I want to read the newspapers too Anne! There seems to be much more to learn about these boxes and I hope that we can one day find out what that is! Ok am I the only one that wants to see Leroy's collection? Thank you Anne & Alice for the fireside chat about these wonderful Wall paper boxes that now are calling my name!

Very interesting, Ladies. Way back when, I used to pick up small paper mache or those small light-weight wooden boxes from the craft store and cover them with wallpaper. I used to get outdated wallpaper books from my local paint and wallpaper store.

The wallpaper episode didn't disappoint. A recent show I attended had a hat box shaped like a top hat. I had never seen one. I've never seen a wallpaper box at a show or antique shop. I'd seriously have to consider buying because of the history and how beautiful they are. Thank you for sharing.

This is so interesting, in the last month or so I have been buying papier-mâché boxes from Hobby Lobby and covering them with Civil War fabric and old looking fabric. After they dry, I take the sander to the edges and then I stain them. They look so old. I’d love to show you, but I don’t know how. Great stories s & collection Alice! Thanks Anne 💞

I hope you can figure out a way to show your boxes because I would LOVE to see them!! May I ask what kind of stain you use?

Shelburne Museum in Vermont has a large collection of hat/wallpaper boxes. I don't know if they have any by Hannah Davis, but if anyone does, I bet it would be them. Thanks for this interesting video. Have a lovely week.

How fascinating…..I noticed mention of the Whig party on the one lid that you were reading…..and that would date the piece to pre 1854 because the Republican Party spun off the Whig party that started in 1834. Thank you for sharing this…..so interesting and beautiful. And I’m excited about more ‘Ask Alice’ episodes - can’t get enough.
