Please note: This video was not created for the meme. I really wanted to restore this saw when I first saw it. It's obvious that the handle is gone and I was hoping to save the blade. I tried for two days to weld up material, but it didn't work and turned out to be mess. So instead of trashing the whole project I kept going and this is the result. Edit: 1) The teeth of this saw had no set, as seen on the original blade after the sandblasting. Instead the blade is tapered. 2) I know this can't be called a restoration, that's why I title this video not as restoration.

Honestly, even if you couldn't recover even the tiniest thing from the original Product, seeing you Recreate the devices so accurately, taking direct inspiration from the original designs, is just as good. Well, no, it isn't. Technically, everything is made on the same machines and with the same tools as he uses. Usually, on more primitive versions of these machines, so it is actually easier today. So obviously, he is capable to recreate any part of any mechanical device. And since he doesn't need to be concerned with price and manhours put into a single piece, he can take the time removing castmarks and things like that, so yeah, better than new condition it is. It kinda take away the magic of it when you look at it like that, but it's the truth. But I too prefer the magical explanation. ;-)

If not for the old original, there would be no new, if not for being found by your follower, it might have remained where it was until nothing was left. We may not be able to save everything, but we can always create to make sure the idea lives on. It's amazing how boring the hole in the handle and inserting the brass sleeve completely transformed it. Another wonderful video.

"This, milord, is my family's axe. We have owned it for almost nine hundred years, see. Of course, sometimes it needed a new blade. And sometimes it has required a new handle, new designs on the metalwork, a little refreshing of the ornamentation . . . but is this not the nine hundred-year-old axe of my family? And because it has changed gently over time, it is still a pretty good axe, y'know. Pretty good."

@Randy Van Horn But... it does cut wood, as you can see at the end of the video. Granted it would work better if the teeth were sharpened, but still.
@eagle1de2274 жыл бұрын
@Randy Van Horn No need to sharpen the teeth - believe me they are sharp enough. This kind of blades are used for (fruit) tree maintenance

@Randy Van Horn Thats not entirely true. Japanese "kobiki" or "kugihiki" saws also have no offset. It depends on what the saw is intended for.

Man I can't even cut paper along the line that well. I'm now realizing that this isn't JUST effort and taking your time, but an incredible amount of skill as well. No way just anyone could do this as well as he does. This guy's a straight up master at his craft. I really appreciate your pinned comment as well. Your care for this art is really commendable, most people would probably just slap the same title on or do something like this solely for the meme, but it really shows how much integrity you have and how this is always the last resort.
@otherpatrickgill3 жыл бұрын
beautiful work. I've worked in a museum, and I can tell you that there was more restoration in your rebuild than you'll find in a lot of 'historical' artifacts behind the glass. One important step you forgot though: setting the saw teeth. You need to bend the alternate teeth out slightly in different directions so that the cut you make in the wood is always slightly wider than the saw blade itself. This prevents (or at least lessens) jamming. There is a tool you can get which does this, it looks similar to a hand rivet tool but shorter. Maybe you can find one to restore or make one for yourself. Alternatively, since you're great with machines, you might machine a saw tooth setting thing which you could use to do all the teeth at once in a bench vice. Anyway, great job.

In the pinned comment, he notes that the teeth had no set in the original
@jacobhernandez87592 жыл бұрын
not only did the teeth have no set in the original but i believe those types of saws are meant to lose the least amount of material as possible since their for "keyholes" or other small holes

I love how many people are saying "Hurr durr this isn't a restoration". He never claimed it as restoration. Quite the opposite. He admitted the original saw was too damaged to restore (I have to say I agree, seeing the rusty pockmarks). So he decided to create something beautiful roughly in the form of the original saw for the person who sent him the saw & the rest of us ungrateful cretins 🤣

Honestly, mymechanics always took freedoms with 'restoration', but that's not really a bad thing. In this case, i would have even preferred he went a step forward and have the 'cutting' teeth be reversed, so it cuts on the pull, not on the push, given the saw itself has a 'pull' handle and no real guard to prevent your hand from sliding into the blade.

Loved the end result. I personally would have sanded down the old handle into dust, mixed it with epoxy resin, and poured it into a recess routed into either side of the new handle. That way you still have some more of the history present.

This is art. You could only save the brass “Ferrell” ? But it doesn’t matter, you recreated a piece of history as it once was and, by doing so, showed us how much work went into a simple tool so many years ago when craftsmen and not robots made things. And remember, the DNA of the person who used this is in the brass......irregardless of how much you sanded away. Thankyou.

The final result is awesome even if you saved only two small metal pieces. Your attention to detail and precision is incredible and I've never seen ANY other restoration channel come even close. Please never change! PS.: If in the future you find objects too broken to restore, maybe you could make a breakdown of the reasons, like a short diagnose-style video. It would still be entertaining and would save you the hassle of pretty much making an entirely new object from scratch.
