@alfiedeyes45573 жыл бұрын
Here is how to care for a snail! 1- purchasing/buying You can find a garden snail in the crevasses of plants after or during rain showers. Also, plenty of people sell snails! eBay is a great place to buy one but do further research if it has a breed in its title. 2- set-up To set up a snail habitat, get a terrarium with holes or a screen in the lid. Make sure that if your making any adjustments to the habitat, that it is stable. (Plastic pieces to hold things should be glued, openings to doors should have a latch or Velcro etc.) start off with some top or potting soil. (DO NOT USE THE KIND WITH THE WHITE CHALKY BITS IN IT!!) just plain old soil(also you could use soil bricks). Make it 2-3 inches deep and then take moss from outside(make sure to clean it with water) or sphagnum moss or moss bricks on the top. Grab a small pot and flip it on it’s side as a hide for the snail, they like to have privacy just like humans! Or you could use a small hide you bought from a pet store. Make sure that they have places to climb on too, they like to explore. Also, make sure you clean ANYTHING, I MEAN A-NY-THING you put in your snails habitat even the dirt! Snails are prone to disease so be careful! DO BOT USE CHEMICALS TO CLEAN JUST WATER 3- food and calcium Make sure you put a cudle bone or crushed eggshells in there container as it provides calcium that they need to grow a strong and healthy shell! Clean out eggshells every week to prevent mold. Snails’ favorite foods are cucumbers, lettuce, strawberries and (most) greens. Always look up if your snail can eat a food before giving it to them. And if you don’t have eggshell or a cuddle bone sprinkle calcium d3 on their food. (Calcium is still a good idea to put in a meal even if you have another source but not needed.) also it’s good to keep their food in a dish to prevent mold from old scraps. 4-I have a snail, now what? Mist your snails habitat at least 2 times a day. Baths are not needed, just make sure to Spray them daily. Replace their dirt every week (they poop ALOT) only replace moss every two months, just rinse and squeeze out water when you replace the soil and with that, clean any objects or decor in the tank (I suggest buying little packs of fairy garden decor on Amazon, as it adds a cutesy touch ^^)
@oliviabradley49723 жыл бұрын
you actually aren’t ever supposed to replace the soil you spot clean everyday to remove the poop but the snails put bacteria in the soil and it’s really good for them and constantly changing the soil makes them have to start over and it stresses them out

I don't think she knows that much about snail care. She put hard objects in the enclosure and snails can (and do) fall. And when they land on rocks etc their shells cracks which usually ends up killing them. That's just one of many mistakes made here. She's a lovely young lady and she seems extremely sweet. But she still has a bit to learn before doing instructional vids.

This video is obviously old now, but as some comments said, the hard decor items might injure the snails if they fall, but rather than taking them out, you could cover them with a blanket of moss (not the spagnum moss, you can get fresh grown sheet moss off Etsy) and the moss will act as a cushion in case they fall and you will still be able to see the pretty decor! Yes snails can break their shells and they fall pretty often so again be careful with hard decor items for anyone who stumbles across this video

I love your enthusiasm and I don't mean to discourage you AT ALL but you don't seem to have to done too much research? First of all, the rocks. As others have pointed out, they climb the walls of their enclosure, and if they fall onto the rocks they could break their shells. Also, PLEASE clamp down the lid with something! If they push that open they could escape! (They're surprisingly strong for their size) The cuttlebone I'm not 100% sure on, but I'm pretty sure you're supposed to clean beforehand (something about them being dusty, but maybe I have bad quality cuttlebones where I live). Overall, love the mushroom aesthetic, love the enclosure, but if you haven't already, PLEASE remove the rocks and other hazards! Have a nice day!

I am a snail enthusiast; I care for and breed snails. I understand your concern but I would like to clarify a few things. 1. Snails in captivity do have minimal differences from snails wild bred however a natural environment for them is necessary. As long as wood, stones, ornaments etc are covered in a softer substrate the snails are safe and thrive. Snails climb to get on higher ground so they are less likely to be seen by predators, they naturally have a strong suction/grip so healthy snails falling isn't a common occurence especially in captivity with little stress levels. 2. Cuttlebone is a great calcium source for your snails as well as egg shells and other supplements. Store brought cuttlefish are sold because of the prime policy of being washed and boiled before it gets to you, so the salts and anything harmful will be disposed of before you get it. Cuttlefish in general is quite powdery. It's safe to use straight away in other words. 3. I have had many different enclosures (from plastic to glass) with lid setups that vary and as long as the whole top surface is covered they won't escape. I see your concern but it really isn't needed here, just by this video it shows that she is aware of the basic research required to keep snails. It would be a different story if she got a container will little to no air holes and put wet tissues as substrate for example. But that's not the case. The issues you do mention are very minimal and unlikely.
@IPullingTractor4 жыл бұрын
Snails like damp environments, and the "dirt" will eventually dry out. So you may need to put some kind of small humidifier in the tank with a sensor that makes it automatically come on to keep the dirt moist.

@natokim in some places they’re considered an invasive species, so yea. And even if it isn’t, it shouldn’t be done in the first place because they can disrupt certain established ecosystems. A lot of snail owners “cull” the eggs which is basically smashing them so they never hatch.
@bobaparadise94193 жыл бұрын
@natokim Depends. Garden snails are usually native to different states in the US. Like i find garden snails outside all the time. Milk snails and such are definitely illegal to own/release though. But It is better to just squash eggs then release them since thats bad for the environment.
