Oh wow. I believe I handled the same sword at an auction viewing day half a year ago. Was indeed amazed at the small size of it. Also put a bid on it, but let it go because I was focused on the bigger walloon hilted sword in the auction.

Loads of boys were employed in the navy and army; apprenticeships where they were educated and learnt their trade. Many were from wealthy families so would be correctly dressed and have some rank.

I love short swords. So much easier to deal in the modern era.

Two alternative hypotheses: - Could be for use in a jungle environment where a short sword is more manageable. - Could be for a child, maybe a page boy.
