ANTIQUED instruments sound DIFFERENT?

Dear Friends, antiquing an instrument involves applying a small amount of dark pigments, specifically "burned umbra" to the surface and then removing most of it . This technique allows me to create an aged effect only in selected areas, giving the instrument a unique and "old" look. It's important to note that antiquing an instrument doesn't change its sound; it's simply a stylistic choice that we make to pay homage to the instruments that inspire us. Do you blacken the edges of the F-holes? I saw this on an old violin.

Heh! I'm getting into instrument making now... I'm starting out with a lyre of my own design (hybridizing a lot of processes and approaches to try to learn as much as quickly as possible on my own). I definitely have some accidental scratch marks and things like that, but when I see them, I see the beauty in the fact that they came from my own error! Because after all, to err is human. Gut strings, hide glue, my varnish will be simple garnet shellac dissolved in everclear. My aim is to make an instrument that you could make 500 years ago with only natural things that is still beautiful. Question... Do you make any viola da gamba family instruments? I think long term I'd like to make these. I don't even own a viol because they are too hard to come by here in the states, but that makes me want to make them and learn the instrument even more. Also, I have relatives in Milan, I might have to visit you and learn a few things!

@Edgar, do you mean cooked linseed oil?because at cremontools for example i do see linseed oil,i believe i need cooked ;inseed oil, while i only see cold pressed linsee? thank you!
